Our church has no bells.
We just got an offer to use a house in San Juan near a beach for as long as we want in September. Apart from the obvious (and perhaps insurmountable) Buckeyes conflicts, does anyone have any positive/negative information about PR? I must confess that I have a completely unsubstantiated impression of the whole island being like Spanish Harlem and not exactly a prime vacation spot. I would love to be wrong about that.

I went down in 2001 with some classmates from college - 2 of which lived in San Juan. First of all, both kids were daughters of doctors, so they lived in very nice gated areas that were within urban SJ; that is to say, it was like some of the nicer places in San Francisco. We had a great time in San Juan hitting up some clubs and casinos. It was like any other city I've ever been to with nice places and places you shouldn't go.

From there we went to a beach condo somewhere along the Carib side of the island, which was very very nice. The beaches were as white and sandy as virtually any other place I've been to, but they have American style stuff nearby - we even ate at a TGI Fridays one night.

I've actually been to several of the islands in the last 5-6 years, and the bigger ones (Jamaica, PR) are about the same with good and bad places, rich and poor places and some very nice resorts. Neither are going to resemble the very small islands with regards to way of life or scenary.

All-in-all, it was a good stay for me. Hope this helps.

There are varying viewpoints on Puerto Rico. Some may argue:
Puerto Rico,
You lovely island . . .
Island of tropical breezes.
Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossoms blowing . . .
But others would state:
Puerto Rico . . .
You ugly island . . .
Island of tropic diseases.
Always the hurricanes blowing,
Always the population growing . . .
And the money owing,
And the babies crying,
And the bullets flying.

Hope that was as useless as intended.

Actually, depends on who's askin'. Are you bkb?

I'm not bkb... and... I never have been. (and if I were.... it would compromise the chain of command, Mr Quitter)

Anyway...

I think... if you like Rum... you're very in business...

Nah... I've never been to PR... but.. most of my Wife's family has... they love it...

I'm more of a Jamaica guy... but.. hey... not my fault they have really good weed there.

I DIDN'T QUIT!!!! I'm on self-annointed deep undercover assignment. I could tell you more, but I'd have to kill myself. And another thing, if there were a chain of command, not that there is, it wouldn't be a chain. It would be more of a Slinky.
