Lighty vs Lighty would be fun to watch, this team would take that one on depth though.

What would we be looking at again?

Mike Conley VS Aaron Craft
Daequan Cook VS William Buford
Jamar Butler VS Jon Diebler
Ivan Harris VS David Lighty
Greg Oden VS Jared Sullinger

Off the bench:
Othello Hunter VS Dallas Lauderdale
David Lighty VS Deshaun Thomas
Matt Terwilliger VS Jordan Sibert

Looking at it I'd go with this years team.

Cook came off the bench, and you left out Ron Lewis. It's a tough call as far as who i'd take between this and the '06 squad. I'll wait until the end of March before giving an answer. That team REFUSED to lose when it mattered. Both the Xavier and Tennessee games in March proved that.

I was thinking about that matchup while watching the game. I think that game would come down to whether Sully could score on Oden. Conley vs. Craft would be worth the price of admission by itself. Everywhere else I would give the advantage to this year's squad.

This team is just a total pleasure to watch. As good as this game was, I think this team still has not come that close to hitting their ceiling. They show great focus and unselfishness on both ends, but there is still room for some tweaking. Thomas seems to be making progress each time out. If he makes a couple more strides, this team could outplay any team in the country for all 40 minutes on any given night.

Thank you, Coach Matta.

I think Lewis was playing more minutes than Cook or Harris by the last 3rd of the regular season. Twig and Hunter got a good amount of time in most games, IIRC. The '06 team was affected by Oden's injury and lineup changes for much of the season. Those teams playing %100 healthy would be a hell of a game.

That Tenn game is one of my favorite memories as a Buckeye fan. I watched at a bar in Cincinnati, and the crowd actually played Rocky Top on the jukebox for most of the game. I spent the entire second half pounding on the bar and telling all the haters where they could stick it every time the Buckeyes scored. The best coaching of Matta's career, IMO.

How could you forget the 06-07 teams 2nd leading scorer, Ron Lewis?

IMO, the superior depth is on the 06-07 team, and I think I have to also say they take the head to head matchup. Not to take anything away from this team at all, but I think our fans are being prisoners of the moment at times when raving about them.

As for the matchups:

PG: Conley vs. Craft- Tough to choose with the way Craft has been playing. Both are the straw that stirs the drink. Conley is the better offensive player, and had to be on that team, and lead the big 10 in steals IIRC. Craft is more of a shutdown defender though. Push I would say.

SG: Butler vs. Buford- Probably give the small edge to Buford here, but Butler certainly was no slouch and was probably a better defender in terms of team man defense. Buford's size though make him such a tough defense since he could shoot over Butler easily.

SF: Lewis vs. Diebs- I like Lewis in this match-up. He was clutch-cargo and could score in a wide variety of ways, whereas Diebs is primarily a spot-up 3 point shooter. Both are decent defenders.

PF: Harris vs. Lighty- Probably take lighty here, although Harris' size made him a better matchup against legit PF's. Lighty is a tough defender and can score more ways than Ivan, although Ivan did have a sweet stroke that season.

C: Oden vs. Sully- Depends on if we are talking late season-healthy Oden and quite frankly a game between these two teams would probably be decided by whether or not GO got in foul trouble. Greg was a complete game changer on the defensive end, and as good as Sully is, Greg can and would give him fits as long as he is in the game. Sully is pretty damn good at drawing fouls though, it would be a great matcup. People seem to forget that Greg also led the team in ppg that year. I'd call this one a push to a slight edge for Oden.

Bench: Cook, Hunter, Lighty, Twig vs. Swatterdale, Thomas, Sibert - I think this is a big egde to the 06-07 team because of the versatility this bench provided and the fact that either Butler or Conley could legitimately play the point to allow a virtual complete substitution. Hunter was a better inside presence than Dallas on both ends of the court. Lighty was already a great defender to bring off the bench, and bringing Cook off the bench was akin to bringing Thomas off the bench for offensive purposes. Plus Twig was able to come in and at least give them 5 more fouls to use and steal minutes.

It's a really good matchup, but I think the frontcourt depth of the 06-07 team wins this game for them. Either way, I absolutely love watching this current team play and think they have a better shot at winning the NC than that team did since there is no juggernaut with 3 experienced lottery picks out there to stop them.
