Ok...so how do we place a bet? and who wants to put in the first bet?

Sorry, I used to be a management type. First we have to lay out the process.

What consitutes an official bet?
Who determines who won in cases where it is at all subjective (i.e. what consitutes a 'good year' for the OL?)?
If somebody goes in the hole and doesn't make it up after a reasonable period, how do we electronically break their legs?
How do we keep bets from cluttering up the regular board?

Stuff like that.

sounds like a fun idea... I would suggest that each month or quarter you get a few bucks added to your account (over time some folks will not have any money left and will not be able to make friendly wagers... if you get a low monthly/quarterly stipen at least over time the folks could get some more money to work with)...

Also I would suggest trying to limit each ID address to the $500... that way you don't have the same person "betting" with themselves to increase their pot...

Cool idea... where's that guy from PSU that was making all those bets last year.... I'd have my pot doubled by now, with all the bets we made (of course I didn't get anything out of him :( )....

Only admins, and some users that I'll define as Bookmakers will be able to create bets. There is protection built in to prevent abuse.

When someone goes broke, I've set the system to make sure when a new event is posted, that they get a 25 BP$ boost. So everyone will be able to play, no matter how bad they are.

This is so cool, I can't believe that this was already built in. I am going to have to do some bettin now.

Clarity,

Is there anyway you can work odds into this system, or is it just straight up?

edit

I supposed I could have checked it out before asking stupid questions. DOH!!

It wasn't built in. A member of the vBulletin community coded up the hack, I've been watching it for a while after Oh8ch suggested something like this a few months back. It finally was stable enough I felt good about installing it here, so I took a few hours today and cut all the new code into the forum, and uploaded the new functionality to the server. Happily, everything seems to be working smoothly since, so no major problems. This forum software is so heavily modified and customized at this point that I'm not sure JelSoft (the vBulletin devs) would recognize the code anymore. Lol. And that's before the stats engine gets put in place.

Anyway, big ups (that's right, I said "big ups") to Oh8ch for suggesting this (and possibly being the lead bookmaker), I think it's going to be a great feature.

Wow. Being a 'process' type I was expecting to exchange messages on this for a couple of months, have a few of chats on the topic, go through a 90 day integration test and then go live around the first of the year - delivering something that nobody really wanted.

Now you know why I 'used to' be in management.

Lol, sorry Oh8, you caught me on a rare day when the thought of pouring through PHP for a few hours didn't completely repulse me. Many of your questions still need to be answered though. Like, what events? Just Big Ten games? Or all of them each week? Just NCAA? Or NFL? College basketball, baseball? Serena Williams v. Maria Sharapova? It's up to us, but I think the back end can meet our needs.

Ignore the URL above, this is the current link to the event;
