QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

Or more simply, Manning was a guy who was going to be a top 3 overall pick so it was a big deal when he chose to stay in school. Cardale's decision, either way, wasn't that big a deal for non-Buckeye fans.
Yet ESPN sent a crew to cover it.

I don't know that race directly played a part, but it sure seems ridiculous that this is hardly the first time anyone has made an announcement concerning their decision to go pro or not, and I honestly can't remember any others getting trashed by "journalists" for continuing their education.

75% of ESPN's draft coverage typically focused on one super-hyped player. Think Quinn, Tebow and Manziel. "Well, the Team A could take him in this next spot, but if they go with a CB instead he will fall to the beginning of round 2 when Team B and C come back on the board! He could be sitting here for three more hours! But what if Belichick swoops in and decides to make him the heir to Tom Brady?!?" and the poor guy sits there forever. It's what gets your casual football fan to stay tuned to the broadcast.

Cardale might be the most hyped athlete in all of American sports at the moment. His rough backstory, the military academy thing, the fact he seems so soft spoken as well as the "3rd string" thing make him the exact opposite of Winston or Manziel. Hell, it would be extremely easy for ESPN to spin Cardale Jones as the biggest underdog story in sports since the Miracle on Ice, or as the new Rudy. And if there's one thing Americans love more than monster trucks, apple pie, reality TV and toddler pageants it's the underdog. That's what ESPN wanted. Months of hype, months of speculation and interviews and shots of Cardale still sitting in NYC in round 2 long after the other invitees got selected. Hell, Kiper probably spent six hours in front of the mirror on Tuesday saying 'I don't understand what these teams are thinking! He's got NFL size, he has a cannon for an arm and he's done nothing but win! He's going to have a chip on his shoulder, just like he did when he was the 3rd string QB at Ohio State!"

Cardale's press conference was supposed to be the starting gun for ESPN to begin their non-stop Cardale coverage that they would use to get them from the pro-sports dead zone of February through March. But Cardale is a master troll and ESPN is throwing a temper tantrum because he robbed them of their opportunity. Now they have to find another mid-round talent to hype up and fly to New York.,
