QB Discussion Thread, Cotton Bowl and 2024

I think Day went into the meeting saying what he knew the McCord family didn't want to hear, and that it could prompt Kyle to leave. I see a very low probability this happened overnight and I assume Day had a very good pulse on it. Obviously we are all guessing at this point, but I imagine Day and the staff watched film of The Game many times and concluded that Kyle may not be the guy, so they opened the QB battle back up. If so, I fully support that decision and if it resulted in the decision to transfer, so be it.

In any event, I doubt Day was blindsided by it or really even overly disappointed. It has been said, but I think Day was damn near ready to start Brown over McCord for real and just went with Kyle's experience. But when Brown came in, I started thinking no, Kyle is better with his accuracy and I think that was the case for this year. Either way, the gap was minimal in our QB room imo and I don't think Day is losing any sleep over the transfer.

As one our highest paid moderators that attends several high-end happy hours, I will chime in. I favor Kienholz with his skillset and leadership...he wins games and just seems to be an all around athlete without sacrificing any accuracy or arm strength that McCord had. He just seems like a better fit for next year's team to me, but we won't know until next year.

What Brown showed this year was not at all impressive and of course I didn't want him to get injured, but after he did our offense was better off without his involvement. I will say this though, part of the issue might have been trying to give him the Tebow role and if the coaches just play him as a more traditional QB then it could be a different story. So there should be a real battle between the two and I don't think we need a top portal QB unless the staff is wowed by someone. Gabriel and Ward are both intriguing, but I am not going to rejoice if they come here like I did Fields because I think either could very well get beat out by Brown or Lincoln, and then be on the road again.

Day could have watched the The Game film and told Kyle we’re back to an open competition. He simply hadn’t shown enough to operate at the level Day wants.
Ryan Day has, for his entire tenure as OSU head football coach, said the expectation for the starting QB at Ohio State is to make the routine plays routinely and don’t make bad plays worse.

I have demurred on any criticism of Kyle all season because I’m not going to bash the kids, but it became apparent around Week 8 or 9 that Kyle couldn’t hit a wide open WR on a flat or an out.

That is the very definition of not making the routine plays routinely.

Same here. I had high hopes for Kyle going in to the season as we probably all did and tried not to be disparaging of the kid. It just became apparent that for whatever reason he wasn't progressing. I still don't believe it was an issue of "talent" because I think the raw talent is there. I mean he was a 5* coming in. It seems the staff dropped the ball somewhere along the line when it comes to his development. I still think he can do well for himself with a fresh start somewhere else and wish him all the luck in the world and hope he does well. The entire atmosphere around him was just becoming toxic and probably added unneeded pressure on him. I just hope that whatever went wrong is an aberration, and not a sign of trouble going forward.

This is what's driven me nuts this season. I don't expect a first year starting QB to be perfect. But my heart shouldn't stop on routine plays at the sticks. Say what you want about Bauserbombs, he wasn't risking a turnover or committing egregious intentional grounding on the regular.

The more I think about it, the more I think Gabriel is the answer if we go to the portal. Moreso than Ward or Moore...

A pass first QB who can make quick reads and has fast processing is what Day prefers, which Gabriel excels at. And we have a receiver corp that would make the most of what Gabriel offers, he would certainly break the NCAA record here if it works out And because of his size (which is a negavtive for sure) he's more likely than other QBs to drift out of the pocket to find passing lanes, which would hide some of the weaknesses of our OL. And him drifting out of the pocket often to make throws leaves defenses guessing as to whether he's looking downfield or looking to scramble. And scrambling is something Gabriel is good at.

He also only has one year of eligibility...which means there's less of a possibility that we lose anyone else in the QB room to the portal.

Downside of Gabriel (other than his size) is that, while he's accurate on the deep ball, he doesn't have the strongest arm...but he's very accurate down field when he does go deep and mostly only ever throws deep when he sees single coverage, limiting turnovers. Also a lot of his success comes off of RPO. I don't know how much Day would want to include more RPO plays, since he's stubborn as hell, but he's going to have to eventually learn to adjust his offense to match strengths of his roster, especially at QB.

I think he is more flexable than you think. Fields had tons of run called for him, and in the small amount of playtime Lincoln has had, he had him running RPOs.

Buckeyes recruited QB's that went back to their home states of Texas and Georgia recently. Now McCord bailed.

Lincoln and Noland aren't running off anywhere and wish to play here, as of now. Fields was a gift a few years back before the new system of FA.

I want QB's now that want to be here and like being a Buckeye over " How much is my NIL payout, Team X ? "

Why don't we wait to see if Lincoln can play and what Noland looks like coming in ?
Lincoln has been in the program for almost a year now. I think the coaches have a pretty good idea whether or not he'd be ready to play next season.

Air Noland is still in High School.

Day & the program cannot afford to wait. They need someone that is ready to play at a high level immediately.
