QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. (All B1G, B1G OPOY, Silver Football, Rose Bowl MVP, R.I.P.)

Report: Jay Gruden didn’t want Haskins, and Haskins can sense that

A widespread sense that Washington coach Jay Gruden didn’t want the team to draft rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins isn’t just speculation.

Washington Post reports both that Gruden did not want Haskins, and that Haskins can sense Gruden didn’t want him. Both of those pieces of information are attributed to unnamed sources who are close to the situation in Washington.

Gruden certainly hasn’t acted like he thinks much of Haskins, putting him on the field only when both Case Keenum was hurt and Colt McCoy was inactive. Gruden has still not said who will start this week.

The good news for Haskins is that Gruden is highly unlikely to be Washington’s coach next year, and perhaps not even for much longer this year. Haskins has a chance to play for a coach who believes in him, even if he didn’t get drafted by a coach who believed in him.

I'm confused so you fire Gruden to do more of the same thing that got him fired in the first place? What exactly was the point of firing him then?

I dont understand why folks want to trot Haskins out there right now... He’s not ready and this OL is absolute TRASH... I’m HOPING he sits this year.. cause there’s a new system next year so getting pounded into the ground is not ideal for him right now.

On NFL teams possibly courting Day after a year or two, here are the top four salaries for current NFL head coaches:

Jon Gruden ..... Oakland Raiders ..... $10,000,000
Sean Payton .... New Orleans Saints ... $9,000,000
Andy Reid ...... Kansas City Chiefs ... $7,500,000
John Harbaugh .. Baltimore Ravens ..... $7,000,000

Urban made $7.6M in 2018, which put him above all but two current NFL head coaches. I would imagine that if Day remains as successful as he has been so far (yeah, we're going to lose some games, but I mean the level at which we're playing and recruiting), there's no reason why the university can't bump Day's salary up to match that. If they do, what incentive would Day have to leave a top-notch college head coaching job? Money would be the only incentive and the university can neutralize that easily. And Day seems to me to be more of the college type coach than pro type coach.
