Ohio State quarterback Joe Bauserman (14) looks for a pass during the 2011 Ohio State Spring Game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on April 23, 2011. The Scarlet team beat the Gray team, 59-27.

Joe Bauserman picked the wrong era to try to be Ohio State's quarterback.

Early in his OSU career he was forced to compete with a highly touted recruit in senior Terrelle Pryor and is now entering his final year battling another highly touted recruit in freshman Braxton Miller.

However, the redshirt senior has been given a golden opportunity to be the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes throughout Pryor's five-game suspension.

Pryor, along with offensive lineman Mike Adams, running back Dan Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas are suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for selling memorabilia and receiving improper benefits. Coach Jim Tressel will join them for failing to report their violations.

Bauserman said that although the situation isn't ideal, he is making the best of the opportunity.

"It's all you can ask for sometimes," he said. "Under the circumstances, it sucks. You'd like to have all five of those guys, and it's tough. But it's an opportunity and I'll try to take advantage of it."

Bauserman played football and baseball in high school and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fourth round of the 2004 MLB draft. He played three seasons in the Pirates' farm system before walking on to the OSU football team.

The 25-year-old former Minor League pitcher said he doesn't miss baseball and is only concerned about the football team.

"I don't even think about it," Bauserman said. "I'm focused on one opportunity and what's going on right now."

Ohio State football: Bauserman safe, steady pick at QB

Joe Bauserman seemed to be the de facto No. 1 quarterback in spring practice.
Joe Bauserman doesn't act like a guy getting the chance of a lifetime.

After four years of inactivity and backup duty, the opportunity to be Ohio State's starting quarterback for the first five games this season practically fell into his lap with the news that Terrelle Pryor must serve an NCAA suspension for accepting improper benefits.

So after the team's spring scrimmage wrapped up three weeks of practice in which he was the de facto No. 1 (though no depth chart was issued), one might expect Bauserman to be enthusiastic, eager, eyes shining with excitement.

But that's not Bauserman. He speaks in quiet, measured tones, with a shrug thrown in for good measure.

Part of it may be simply his personality. Part of it may be that experience has leavened him. He's 25 years old, a former minor-league baseball pitcher who walked on at Ohio State in 2007 after spending three years in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system.

In any case, don't count on Bauserman to provide bulletin-board material, or even enough material to make an interesting quote.

"This is an opportunity for me, so I want to be able to take advantage of it as best I can," he said.

Can Bauserman be more than average Joe?
June, 7, 2011
By Adam Rittenberg

Aside from being a right-handed quarterback, Joe Bauserman has very little in common with the man he has backed up the past two seasons.

Terrelle Pryor was flashy, talented and a bit troubled. He dominated the headlines both before and during his unique career at Ohio State. The understated Bauserman, meanwhile, has been a master at blending into the backdrop -- until now.

Joe Bauserman is "going to make the smart play, and that's what you want from your quarterback," center Mike Brewster told the Columbus Dispatch.

Pryor is gone, and Bauserman, a 25-year-old former pitcher in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization who walked on at Ohio State in 2007, suddenly is the Buckeyes' most experienced quarterback -- by far.

As the Buckeyes scramble for a starting quarterback not just for the first five games but for the entire season, Bauserman appears to be the safest option. In fact, if Ohio State turns to its Tressel-ball roots this season, Bauserman, who has been in the system for four years, is a good fit to call the signals.

He has thrown for only 320 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in his career, hardly a r?sum? that pops off the page. But compared with competitors Kenny Guiton, Taylor Graham and Braxton Miller, Bauserman is a grizzled vet. If limiting mistakes is Ohio State's top goal for its QB, the team likely will turn to Bauserman.

Bauserman graduates

Whether Joe Bauserman, the backup to Pryor the past two seasons, will be the starting quarterback for the season opener remains to be seen, but he now can boast of being an alumnus. The fifth-year senior was one of 15 current or former OSU football players to take part in graduation ceremonies yesterday.
Joining him were three of OSU's departed captains from last season: Cameron Heyward, Brian Rolle and Dane Sanzenbacher.
"There was a lot of hard work involved, and now there is a feeling of gratitude because this is the reason I came to college, and to be the first in my immediate family (to gain a degree) is truly an honor," said Heyward, who was a first-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in April. "I have something to fall back on. It feels like a sense of entitlement to graduate from college."

Congratulations to him. Graduating from college is nothing to sneeze at.

I paid little attention to the draft. But I'd imagine that they all got drafted (except I seem to be thinking Sanzenbacher didn't get drafted). Especially Heyward - it takes some good willpower to stay in class despite expecting the big payday to be coming up soon, and for that first paycheck to be independent of whether you graduated. Congratulations to these three guys, as well.

Zero regrets: Bauserman still happy with decision to play for Buckeyes

Joe Bauserman's journey to Ohio State came though many tough decisions.

Where to go to high school? Whether to play college football or minor league baseball? Now as he approaches his final year at Ohio State, his decisions on the field could play a big part in whether the rising senior wins the starting quarterback job or plays the backup role once again.

Bauserman is confident that he is capable of being the starter and leading the Buckeyes to another strong season.

It's been a long process that's taken Bauserman to this season, and he said he has no regrets.

"It's been going well," Bauserman said. "I couldn't ask for anything better. I'm pretty happy with where I'm at."

I'm hoping we have the talent in our receiver corpse to compliment Bauserman if they choose to start him.

@ 4.7/40 he's not really fast enough to escape the pocket like we may need him to do.

I'm actually rather enthused about starting Braxton and getting him acclimated early on.

I will say I've always thought Joe's a decent passer though and trust in his experience to make smart decisions.
