QB Joe Burrow (transfer to LSU, 2019 Heisman Winner, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

If he thinks he's got legit potential to play in the league and wants sure-thing playing time at this point (or, fcuk it, if he just wants sure-thing playing time), I couldn't fault him at all if he decides to transfer. I assume that the staff is being honest with him (and with Haskins and Martell) about their PT chances so that he'll be able to make an informed decision.

I guess I did not realize that Burrow and Barrett had developed such a strong relationship.
Burrow spoke on behalf of J.T. Barrett.

"That was pretty emotional for us. J.T. is one of my best friends here," Burrow said Saturday night in Indianapolis. "He's had a great career. It coming to an end got pretty emotional for us both."

Burrow has said in the past how he thinks he and Barrett, personality-wise, are very similar. Their playing styles appear to not be far off either. Burrow has been Barrett's teammate for three years, and together they've seen some weird situations in Ohio State's quarterback room. So it makes sense, just based on those facts, that Burrow would be emotional.
I guess I did realize that Burrow would be graduating this Spring and will be eligible for 2 more years.

the most important piece of this: Burrow is on track to graduate in May. That means he could transfer after spring ball, be immediately eligible to play somewhere else, and have two years of eligibility remaining.

For now, Burrow plans on being with the Buckeyes through the spring.

"That's the plan, yeah," he said when asked directly if he will stick around and compete for the starting job.

If he doesn't win it, he would be free to transfer and play immediately anywhere he chooses upon graduating in May.

Ohio State QB Joe Burrow considering transfer but ‘leaning toward staying’

“I have to talk to my parents about it, talk to my coaches, and just make a decision here in the near future,” Burrow said.

“I don’t know. I’m leaning toward staying.”

“Yeah, it was pretty devastating to me for a while,” Burrow said. “I came to terms with it the last couple weeks. Either way, no matter what I do, I’m going to have to come out and compete somewhere. I felt like I got a lot better in the last couple weeks of bowl practice, and that was good.”

I'd love for Joe to stay. I think with JT graduating and only have Baldwin coming in the QB depth is going to be thin with Haskins and Martell and Baldwin likely a redshirt and also will be recovering from an injury leaving us with 3 QB's. Wasn't Burrow the 2nd string before he injured his hand as well? He has a great opportunity to win the starting job and even if he doesn't I think he is the best option at #2 if Haskins either gets injured or doesn't pan out as expected. I think he is a better passer than JT and can also run the read option well from what we've seen, not a burner but can pick up yards when nothing is there. Really anxious to see him fully healthy and if he doesn't win the starting job I really hope the coaches will put him in during blowouts a lot sooner/more often than they did this year with JT staying in longer than a lot of people hoped for(I think getting JT more time to progress was the reason for that) If he stays I think we will be just fine at QB with him or Haskins and should really open up the offense more like we seen with Cardale in the postseason a few years ago and also SHOULD mean more carries for the RB's which also points directly to Mike Webber to stay another year and hopefully see a lot of carries as well, I really liked the way he played this year.

I think Joe is a better version of JT as far as being an athlete; makes great decisions, makes more accurate throws, runs well (more than adequate), etc. May be not an out spoken leader like a JT, but he should be fine. DH was given a chance after Joe's unfortunate injury, and he did great with that opportunity. It depends on what the coaching staff wants to do next year as far as play calling. Read option? Go with Joe. Traditional pocket passer and run attack? Go with DH...though Joe can pass too but just not as crisp.

So we get a Dec. 6 article that [more] adamantly states his plan is to the stay and compete.

Now the after-bowl article says there is some consideration into transferring. Blame the off-season for me reading into this, but I take it as a sign he has a clearer picture of where he stands after 15 bowl practices.

Positive- perhaps Haskins continued to separate himself (or Martell even). Negative- losing Joey B.

I think it’s pretty clear he will compete for the job in the spring, and then if he’s not named the starter, transfer over the summer.

I don’t see a contradiction between the two articles.

Fair. Like I said, early off-season boredom and reading too much into it. Earlier article seemed to frame it around competing in Spring and this article he states he has to make a decision "soon."

Obviously, the spring timeline makes sense with his graduation in May.

After ‘Pretty Devastating’ Injury, Joe Burrow Ready To Fight For Starting Job

Joe-Burrow-Nebraska-1170x780.jpg

Joe Burrow entered Ohio State football’s 2017 fall camp with a strong chance to seize the backup quarterback position. That meant that not only would he be the one to step in if J.T. Barrett suffered an injury during the season, he might also have a leg up to start the battle to be the starting quarterback in 2018.

He arrived in Columbus with an incredible pedigree. Burrow put up more than 11,000 yards passing, more than 2,000 yards rushing, and accounted for 184 touchdowns in three seasons as a starter for Athens High School.

He showed flashes of that promise during limited action as a redshirt freshman in the fall of 2016, going 22-for-28 for 226 yards and two touchdowns, and then racked up 262 yards and three touchdowns through the air during the Spring Game.

That all changed in an instant during the Buckeyes’ practice on August 21. Burrow broke a bone in his throwing hand and had to undergo surgery.

With OSU set to kick off their season at Indiana just 10 days later, the timing couldn’t have been much worse.

“The injury was pretty devastating to me this year,” said Burrow.

The redshirt sophomore did everything possible to get back on the field as soon as he could.

Joe Burrow takes his first snaps of the season against UNLV.

“I was throwing about six days after surgery – I started gripping and throwing the ball again,” said Burrow after the Cotton Bowl. “I was in there probably 8-10 hours per day getting treatment on my hand. It was a long journey to get back to 100 percent.”
