QB Justin Zwick (B1G Champion, National Champion)

That's a definite Tressel move. Offer one guy and wait for him to decide and lose out on recruiting other QBs. It's a very noble, honest, and goood hearted thing to do, but that's the kind of thing that makes him a 2nd teir recruiter.

It's interesting, and it's good to have standards if that is the case. For my money it's good to see him do those kinds of things, and I hope that the kids he does get play that much harder for him because of it.
What you fail to realize is how many 5-star "studs" become DUDS. Most are primadonnas or don't live up to their top billing.

He also recruits players that want to be Buckeyes. Players recruit early (like Wells, Ginn, ONeal, Boone, Worthington, etc.) and are extremely good influences on the team.

Take Thomas Matthews for example. This guy got the entire team pumped and ready for teh game and always was getting mentioned as being the emotional leader for the bucks.

Taking more 5-star recruits will give you more HS talent, but when those 5-star players get beat out for PT, they often complain and transfer elsewhere where they can start.

We're looking at lists with Ohio guys like Alex Boone, Jam O'Neal, Chris Wells, Rob Schoenhoft and out of state guys like Doug Worthington and Mo Wells, yet someone here is calling Tressel a "second-tier" recruiter?

I guess those guys must have only had MAC offers or something. :roll2:

Well, I'm not really sure what a 2nd tier recruiter is but, at this early point, if you have a clear #1 qb target, you focus on him. I don't see a problem with that strategy as long as one of the others gets offered before the season, which i'm sure they will. I'm also not sure if either of the 3 qb's mentioned have separated themselves from thae pack. Maybe in your Conley-esque mind we should offer all 4 qb's and take the first 2 that accept, even if we miss out on the one the coaches like the best , huh? That seem to work well for Coop and Conley.

tebow is a kid that you make room for regardless.

if osu had gotten a 2nd back last year, they wouldnt have turned down gwaltny.

osu will offer either hartline or schlicter at camp, depending on who impresses the most.
I just have a sense this will be a Zwick/Smith QB haul like in 2002. Target one, get one early and we take 2 because 2 want to come and you can't turn down the talent.

So far we really have 5 QBs I can see looking to come here. Hartline, Schilcter, Tebow, Kirbus & Hakes. Imagine that summer camp if all 5 show up :yow1:

But in reality Tebow is more of a pipe dream, with Urban at Florida after him, I don't see him leaving his home state. You offer because he is the best QB out there, and if he comes you make room. But you offer in hopes to get him to your camp to compare him to your other QB recruits. The camp will be used to determine who will get the offers.

I know nothing about the 2006 recruiting class, but you have to wonder how hard it will be to bring in talent that year.

Those recruits would be joining this '06 depth chart:

JR (RS) Boeckman
SO (RS) Schoenhoft
FR (RS) Hartline/Schlicter/Hakes

While there aren't many QBs on this roster, all three look solid and all are spread out evenly over the years. Unless the QB recruit is amazing, he will sit the bench until he is an upperclassman.

That's why I think it would be a lot smarter to nab an extra QB this year if they are interested.

Good thing I'm not in charge. I'm sure they'll have a good handle on the 06 recruiting class QB prospects by next fall, and will be able to make a more informed decision than us BP addicts.

"What you fail to realize is how many 5-star "studs" become DUDS. Most are primadonnas or don't live up to their top billing."

Amen to that, brother. I seem to recall the press all but handing the Irish at least two NCs when they landed Ron Paules (sp?). I remember him blowing up on the sidelines at the Shoe and at their place, first at his center and then at his coaches. He proved to be nothing more than a good quarterback with a head two sizes bigger than his helmet.

What I really don't want to ever see again is something as debilitating as that Jackson - Germaine QB episode.

Ya I know guys... Tressel's Dasani turns into Martini and Rossi... My fault.

Let me first answer a few questions:
How many top tier recruiters do you think are in D1 football?
Maybe about as many tier one programs? 5? Maybe 6? I'm not talking about the top HALF here, people.

BuckefromscUM: What you fail to realize is how many 5-star "studs" become DUDS.
Except the ones that come to OSU, right? :roll2: So they're not perfect, but 5-star players have proven they have talent with their play on the field and have the biggest potential to be stars. If we were all clarivoyant, sport wouldn't be any fun, jackleg.

Now seriously--if someone could come to OSU and NOT land top 15 classes consistantly, I'd call them one of the worst recruiters I've ever seen. He's in a state rife with talent, with virtually no competition in-state. When's the last time OSU had a coach that couldn't consistantly land top 15 classes? That doesn't sell me as a product of Tressel, but a product of the tradition of OSU reinforced by great talent in-state.

I point to his actual recruiting practices and say 'hey, the best of the best in the business are willing to do things that Jim Tressel isn't.'

Let me preface the rest of this diatribe by defining 'good' recruiter. Good recruiter is a guy who can land the blue chip recruit regardless of location and will do what he has to to put the best talent on the field.

That being said, Jim Tressel is, in all likelyhood, too noble of a man to compare with "#1" Pete Carroll and the like. The 'good' recruiter will over-offer and burn the bridges when/if they have to. The good recruiter will tell a kid he's ther #1 guy and he's going to get the PT, even if he's not.

Jim Tressel's had more de-commits since he's been at OSU than guys like Coker, Stoops, Carroll, Brown. When Jim Tressel goes head-to-head for recruits with guys like fat Phil or Petey Caroll, if they're outside of Ohio--JT's often come up short. I think this is the most telling indicator. For every Wells we wrenched from USC, There was a McCoy, a Sanchez, and a Gwaltney we missed out on. Who's the last REALLY heavily recruited player that Jim Tressel landed out-of-state? Worthington and Wells are two of his first. Santonio Holmes didn't even get a whole lot of attention in his own state.

The other knock on him, and it's and unjustified one in my eyes, is his inability to close the deal in the end. Most notably in his '03 year, where he was a big 0-8 and had the de-committal of now star defensive end Stanley McClover (was he a blue chip dud, BuckeyefromscUM? :roll2: ). It doesn't make him look any better as a recruiter, but the type of player that Jim Tressel likes to recruit genereally doesn't care to wait until NLOI day to sign.

Ohio kids become Buckeyes. His best recruiting class ever ('02)? Almost all Ohio kids. One year, he only landed one kid TOTAL out of state. IIRC, that class was still top 20. Someone explain to me how that is all JT.

I love our coach. I don't care if anyone outside of Ohio EVER wears Scarlet and Gray. He's a great coach, motivator, evaluator of talent, and most importantly role model and mentor to a lot of student athletes. I'm not some insane "Oh God the talent at OSU has never been so low." kinds of people, but I don't believe recruiting is, or will ever be the strong point of JT. It doesn't have to be. It won't show up in recruiting class numbers, it won't show up in talent on the field, it won't ever show up because the OSU history and strength of players in-state doesn't call for a recruiting master.

Well that certainly wasn't need but it is a great disclaimer when people feel outnumbered...:wink2:

Anyway, everything you have laid out is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to that. You mention a McCoy, a Sanchez, and a Gwaltney as losses for JT. First look at Rico McCoy...he is from Washington DC...not exactly a hotbed of football. He was a shining star in that setting. Yet how would he have ranked if he played in Ohio? Possibly better..probably lower. Yet a kid like Spitler is surrounded by athletes and especially football players so he blends in instead of stands as a man amongst boys. Then you mention Sanchez...the home team kept him just as we would all expect JT to do with the Ohio boys. No loss there IMO. Now you have Gwaltney....he chose neither of the two powerhouses to go to WVU. You are asking JT to pull out all stops to get these kids and use Pete Carroll as a prime example...yet Carroll did not convince to come to USC. Is he a second tier guy now as well? Your opinions are valid and are actually a strong argument...however, you are not giving him enough credit for controlling Ohio IMO. It is not the program that recruits these kids...otherwise we would have never had that sight of Desmond Howard and the Heisman, Charles Woodson, Kjana Carter, or Elvis Grbac...JT has closed that door. It took a few years, but he now chooses which Ohio kids come to tOSU...not the other way around. We have kids waiting until the last minute for that offer.

Sorry, I respect your opinion, but I disagree with your assessment.

I surely hope he's closed that door, and I know he can't be PERFECT, but Mario Manningham is an example of someone that got away this year. Burgess, Davis, Crable, Quinn, et al.

Petey did lose his #1 guy in Gwaltney, but USC gets all of em. Doesn't it seem as if OSU targets less out of state kids than any other program? And why not? It doesn't seem like Jim Tressel's as comfortable doing it as some of the other big coaches.

I'm done highjacking this thread.
GO JUSTIN WE BELIEVE IN YOU :)

P.S. Thanks everyone for the negative rep, I have been much too popular around here recently anyhow

Don't let misused rep stand in the way of good discussion...I don't agree with your opinion but it has been presented well. Rep should not have come into play inthis one IMO

Anyway, MM is a strange case. I agree that it works toward your argument of hard recruiting because JT seemed to lay off the kid...but it also JT does not chase kids who have zero interest in tOSU. Daniels was the exception but his interest in a debatable factor...

As for offering OOS kids, why should he offer a plethora of them? Ohio itself can supply 90% of what we need...

I love Ohio kids, I think they're great. But where's the blue chipper?

For example, Ohio State is a HUGE producer of DBs, yet Ashton Youboty is the biggest DB we can land (Again, I love Ashton...)?

Why couldn't we close the deal with Rico? He plays on the right side of the ball for OSU. The playing time was there. Everything was there. He goes to Tennessee. Opportunity wasn't the problem there, so why did he choose UT?

BBL, class just ended :)
