QB Quinn Ewers (transfer to Texas)

Don’t recruit someone to sit two years unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt their ok with it. Don’t recruit someone you want to develop if they already think they are developed.

On the other hand tOSU didn't know what they had with Stroud before the season. What happens if all 3 guys they had end up getting a shot and sucking this year? You never turn down a top recruit because you are worried he might transfer if he doesn't get a shot soon enough. If things had gone differently with Stroud tOSU might be having an open competition at QB this spring and Ewers would have had a shot. Luckily for us Stroud was so awesome that he scared away options 3 and 4 because they knew they would be sitting for at least another year. Keep recruiting top talent every year and let the cream rise. Assuming Stroud is a first round pick next year that's a pretty awesome string of first round QB's passing through Cbus over the past several years.

^^^ This. Welcome to the new norm. Elite QB talent will go to schools where they know they will be developed for the next level. They will be willing to sit and learn a year, maybe two, but after that they will look for a school where they can showcase their talent if they can't do it in scarlet and grey. Fortunately we have the luxury of bringing the QB talent in each year and then deciding who will have that opportunity, rather than waiting for the leftovers. I fully expect at least one elite QB will be brought in each class, and at least one QB transfer at the end of each season as long as Day is running the program.

It's not just QB.... it's all positions.

Well, right now, the WR and QB rooms are being recruited at an unworldly elite level and OSU can afford some attrition, portal departures. and early signing day misses/flips.

I don't see that happening at other positions though, so it's just a matter of time before that lack of depth and all these misses/flips and transfers that you were counting on having on your roster come back to bite you.

Like I said a few days ago, OSU doesn't have 5*'s waiting their turn on the OL/DL, where they are lacking behind the SEC. They need to pick up their transfer portal game if this is the new norm or they're going to fall further behind.

One thing that perhaps hasn't been considered: Ewers took a scholly away from someone, maybe someone who really wanted to be a Buckeye. Now that person is somewhere else. Maybe it didn't matter, but maybe it did.
Thats the gist that Lane Kiffin was getting at about this chaotic mess. Losing a scholly in a year you have a lot of needs and the player doesnt pan out can lead to some brutal shortcoming but when they just leave and your depth gets plundered, that is likely to cost people jobs due to what happens on the field. I know there's nothing going to be done about it but I can see these coaches' point of view at schools that have built something when the second tier are just going to throw money at their problems and catch up overnight.

But QBs have been transferring for years now! Since the 2000s, QBs move like no other position. I forgot the class, but almost 15 of 20 QBs transferred from the school they signed with. Heck, the B1G has had several years where the starting QB of multiple teams was a transfer. And that was BEFORE NIL.

Although he is no longer a Buckeye, Ewers said he is still close with Stroud and wants to see Stroud have continued success this year.

“C.J.’s a great player, a great human being, we have a good relationship,” Ewers said. “I’m super pumped for what he has in store for the rest of his career and stuff like that.”

Ewers was also complimentary of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and Corey Dennis, saying he “learned a lot” from them.

“I'm super happy that I learned as much as I did,” Ewers said. “Ohio State has a great coaching staff, a great offensive coordinator in Coach Day and a good QB coach with Coach Dennis and I learned a lot out there and I'm thankful for my time up there. But like I said, I'm excited for the future.”

Justy sayin': I wonder just how much coaching the QBs the actual offensive coordinator (i.e. Kevin Wilson) does.

Brian Davis, a reporter covering Texas football and men’s basketball for the Austin American-Statesman, said Ewers is still going through the process of learning how to play at this level.

“The one thing that I saw was someone who looked like a true freshman out there, because, let’s be honest, that’s kind of what he is. He will make a throw that leaves you thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, holy moly’, but then he’ll make a throw right to the defensive back for a turnover. We saw that in the spring game,” Davis said. “Does that make him good, bad or different? No, that makes him a brand new college quarterback.

“It’s one thing to be at Ohio State and take a bunch of reps with the third team or fourth team, whatever it was, and it’s something totally different to be at a Power Five school and you’re taking the reps with the first team,” he continued. “Expectations, everything are ratcheted up to sky-high levels. Texas fans, and maybe even (Steve) Sarkisian himself, are basically buying in on the hype right now that this guy is as good as everyone says or hopes that he is. Honestly, to me it remains to be seen.”

Just sayin'; And the pressure just got "ratcheted up" a few notches to start in 20122 with Manning's commitment for 2023.
