Ex-Wolves QBs shine for new teams

The wins were all that were missing from a big weekend for a couple of former Manchester Wolves quarterbacks.

Arena Football League backups Chris Sanders of the Arizona Rattlers and Steve Bellisari of the New Orleans VooDoo both got the call and both performed well. Sanders threw for 266 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for three more. Meanwhile, Bellisari helped set a league record with 11 total touchdowns (nine passing, two rushing).

"It's nice to see," said Wolves lineman Mike Wells, who played with Sanders in 2004 and Bellisari in 2006. "Both were dedicated to the team. They're great guys and great players."

Bellisari threw for a team-record 418 yards in an 80-79 loss to Dallas. Bellisari kept pace with AFL legend Clint Dolezel, who also managed 11 touchdowns. It was the first time in AFL history that two quarterbacks in the same game accounted for 11 touchdowns each.

Tom Archdeacon: Dayton was springboard for Bellisari

By Tom Archdeacon
Dayton Daily News

Saturday, June 23, 2007

After the NFL, his first football stop was Dayton.
Playing for the now defunct Dayton Warbirds, a low-level indoor team, Steve Bellisari said the experience was "humbling."
Actually, the former Ohio State quarterback could have used another description, but he was taking the high road.
As for the Warbirds, their road was a dead end. During Bellisari's 2005 season with them, they hop-scotched between two leagues and went through two owners, two general managers, two head coaches and all their cash.
Bellisari still is owed six game checks.
And yet?
"Coming to Dayton was the best thing in the world for him," said his agent, Ron Todd. "He became a quarterback again."

AFL players to earn bragging rights based on outcome of BCS National Championship Game
01/04/08 - Arena Football League (AFL)

Bellisari, is also no stranger to big collegiate bowl games, having appeared in the 1999 Sugar Bowl and the 2000 and 2001 Outback Bowls. An Ohio resident, Bellisari splits his time as linebackers coach at nearby Ohio Dominican University in the fall and leading the VooDoo offense in the spring. Even still, he finds time to keep a close eye on the Buckeye program.

"I have season tickets," exclaims Bellisari. "This year, I didn't get to go because I was coaching, but normally I go to all the home games and I workout over there (in Columbus). I see those guys on a regular basis. I'm good friends with some of the coaches and I keep in touch with them."

Bellisari intends to take in the atmosphere of the game and then watch his Buckeyes in action in his AFL hometown.

"I'm flying into New Orleans that morning," he detailed. "I'm going to workout with some of my VooDoo teammates that day and go to the game later that night."

I lived with Steve for 2 years during college. We had some crazy times, and although he wasnt playing great, i have to think that it wasnt ALL his fault. I dont know if the coaches put him in the best position to win. I dont think they played to his strenghts. Hell, maybe i'm wrong but it was hard to hear my friend get bashed the way he did. Steve didnt mind that much but i know his family did. And his big brother Greg is not someone you want to mess with. I lost touch with Steve but I wish him all the luck and know that hes doing well on the field and off (recent marraige).

I used to work with him @ 'somewhere' and he was a real good dude...
I think that just about anyone you could think of during those years had lots of undeveloped potential not realized.

Nine Former Buckeyes In Arena Football - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Nine Former Buckeyes In Arena Football

Nine former Ohio State football players, including three quarterbacks, are on Arena Football League rosters as AFL teams open training camp. The AFL's opening weekend is February 29 - March 3.

Among those who played at Ohio State are Columbus Destroyers? DL Winfield Garnett and New Orleans VooDoo WR/DB BJ Barre, who were both named to the 2007 All-Ironman Team. Garnett will be joined in 2008 by recently signed QB Justin Zwick. Former Buckeye QB Joe Germaine had a standout season in 2007 with the Utah Blaze, where he posted a team-high 5,005 pass yards and 107 passing touchdowns. Germaine also ran for a team-high six rushing touchdowns.

Other former Ohio State players on preseason AFL rosters include: Josh Huston (Cleveland), James Cotton (Columbus), Juan Porter (Grand Rapids), Jamar Martin (New York) and New Orleans VooDoo QB Steve Bellisari. In 2007, Bellisari led the VooDoo with a team-high 47 passing touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns, as well as 2,287 passing yards in 307 attempts.

An extra advantage

A year after splitting time with veteran Andy Kelly, Steve Bellisari settles in as the VooDoo's starting quarterback this season. The former Ohio State star is coming off a season where he threw for 2,287 yards, 47 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions.
But despite putting impressive numbers in limited duty, Bellisari is not content with his play.

"I thought I did a decent job last year," he said. "I still think that my completion percentage needs to be higher. I need to take better care of the ball this season. Yeah, I only had 12 interceptions, but those are 12 errors that shouldn't have happened."

Besides learning from Kelly, Bellisari also has an advantage other quarterbacks don't have. He actual knows what a defensive back is thinking. He played safety for the Buckeyes his first two seasons before being moved to quarterback.

"My background as a defensive back gives me an advantage," he said. "Part of a quarterback's responsibility is to study opposing defenses and learn how to anticipate what they are going to do. My experience as a defensive back helps me understand what they're looking at when they're studying me."

Besides Bellisari, the team returns fullback and 2007 AFL All-Rookie selection James Lynch, lineman Chad Setterstrom and Greg Walker.

Wendall Williams returns after catching 65 passes for 648 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2007 to lead a deep receiving corps that includes former Louisiana Tech star James Jordan (61 receptions, 574 yards) and former Saints tight end Zach Hilton. With those weapons it shouldn't be hard for Bellisari to back up his mantra of "the goal is to score on every possession."

Bellisari's injury among low points in VooDoo loss
Sunday, March 02, 2008
By Brian Allee-Walsh

Bellisari's errant passes came after he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee and left the game midway through the third quarter. Backup quarterback Danny Wimprine played until Bellisari was fitted with a knee brace.

VooDoo Coach Mike Neu said Bellisari will undergo further tests today.

The VooDoo opens it home schedule next Sunday at 2 p.m. at the New Orleans Arena against the Orlando Predators.

"I'll know more tomorrow about Steve's knee when we get back to New Orleans," Neu said Saturday in Los Angeles. "From my perspective, I don't want to take anything away from Los Angeles, but I think our wounds were self-inflicted. Steve tried to gut it out the best he could, but, in hindsight we probably forced a couple of balls that we would have been better off to have thrown away and line up and play another down. In Arena League Football a turnover is huge, and to have three of them on three consecutive drives like that is very tough to overcome."

Bellisari said he may have "pressed a little bit" when he returned to the game and "tried to make too many plays happen too fast."

"After I tweaked my knee, I guess I shouldn't have probably gone back in there," Bellisari said. "But I was trying to go out there and make some plays. Obviously there were a couple of throws I'd like to have back."
