QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

There are currently 4 QBs ahead of Tate on the roster. JT coming back kind of confuses the situation more. We all for the most part expected him to have an insane year and go to the draft. He regressed further with a crappy position coach.
For Tate's sake, as has been said here in the previous pages:
Collier graduated and likely will be offered a GA scholarship to try to free up some space for the '17 class. He's basically a GA already and has a much more promising future in coaching if he jumps on the chance.
Assuming there isn't an injury bug. Loser of Haskins/Burrow for the backup role this year might transfer. If Burrow wins it, he could go 1 start and done not playing his 5th year. That would allow Haskins to probably 1 start and done. And Tate and Jones will fight it out as junior/sophmore. If Haskins wins, Burrow will probably grad transfer after next year. He's a stud that has NFL potential and needs to start somewhere. Haskins would start for 2 years then.
Either way it's a 3 year wait for Tate. Probably a RS soph or RS junior would be his first real opportunity to start. Assuming he doesn't beat out Haskins.

He and his family have got to know that it will be awhile. I'm sure that the staff didn't sugarcoat that. Fcuk, he lives in Vegas. If he wanted to go run a spread offense right away, he could just go to Nevada (or, obviously, many other places). The point is that he didn't do that. I think they're on board, so until otherwise, I'm on board with House Martell.

If that is true, I was not in the most part, at least with respect to the second alleged expectation. I suspect that "not in the most part" included quite a few people.
To clarify I said insane year and try the draft. I did not say he would be a successful NFL qb. Many here think he isn't built for the NFL. I think most here thought JT would get close to his 2014 numbers with warriner calling the plays over beck and with cardale out of the picture.
If he came close to his 2014 numbers I'd expected him to go the the draft. He certainly wasn't going to improve his draft stock by saying in college and putting up great stats a third time. Alas we learned Beck is aweful at quarterback development and JT regressed again.

Edit: Maybe I'm just sitting at a layover a little drunk killings time reading BP and want to defend my point.

If you're counting Collier as one of those four, then you may want to reconsider. I'm guessing that they'll grant Collier a medical scholarship and keep him on the sidelines as an assistant like he was this past season.

We all hoped for him to have an insane year.

I'm not going to criticize this kid. I hope he becomes a great Buckeye. But for football and non-football reasons, I don't think he will ever take a meaningful snap at Ohio State as a QB. If I'm wrong, then ridicule me 2-5 years from now. But right now, that's what I think.

Wow, what a deja-vu moment! After returning from the Spring Game in 2003 following the NC season I posted the EXACT same thing about Justin Zwick at the time on "Bucknuts." Even went as far to predict that Troy Smith would someday be a Heisman Trophy "Candidate.":lift:

That being said, the tape I've seen of Tate remind me so much of Manziel that it boggles my mind. And although he's evolved into a douchebag-extraordinaire, Manziel in college is exactly what Urban or anybody else in the country would want as your QB. I'm really pulling for this kid to evolve into the starter and a star. He's looks like he has the football goods, definately has a marketable face, and the name alone makes you think "WWE" Time will tell. Granted, it's only High School so far.

That being said, WELCOME to and BEST OF LUCK at TOSU young Mr. Martell!

Peace

Ditto.

Without going into specifics, I saw an interview sometime last fall. Didn't like what was said or the attitude it was said with. It was an impression I had. My buddy saw the same interview, chalked it up to the immaturity of a teenager, but he is really high on this kid.

The bottom line is if he is a model young man and becomes an all-time great Buckeye, it's not like me or anyone else who has concerns about him now will be saying, "Yeah but there was that interview back when he was 17." :biggrin2:

TATE MARTELL, TRUE FRESHMAN
The 4-star commit arrived on campus last week as one of Ohio State's nine early enrollees in what is shaping up to be a legendary 2017 recruiting class. He also never lost a game he started in high school at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, earned Gatorade National Player of the Year honors, and is the nation's No. 2 dual-threat quarterback recruit.

OK, how is the "National Player Of The Year" only a 4 star #2 duel threat quarterback.....or vice versa?

Same reason Troy won the Heisman but didn't get drafted until the 5th round. POY rewards HS accomplishments while recruiting rankings are for projecting success in college

A famous American (i.e. Mark Twain) once said: “It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.”

The guy is just "a winner", i.e. he has a "winners mentality" and/or just knows how to win. Martell reminds me of another undersized (i.e. 5' 10") QB that had the unique ability to "snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat"; and he had an "all right" career:
