QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Seems like we're getting into a bit of rampant speculation and armchair psychology bordering on bashing for a kid who's still a Buckeye and may yet remain one.

A few things to consider, for example:

1. We don't know for sure what Day might have told him about his future or opportunity to truly compete for the starting job.

2. We don't know for sure that Fields will be eligible for next season.

3. We don't know for sure that he's leaving before spring practice and that he won't compete for, or maybe even win, the starting job.

4. We don't know for sure that any QB will make it through spring practice without getting unlucky and having a season-ending injury.

My suggestion is to take a deep breath and wait for things to play out before we start yapping about a Buckeye being "a cancer" or "Chase Winovich" ...
The taking a deep breath would be appropriate before he put his name in the transfer portal. He needs to go to school through spring anyhow, so why would you go through spring practice in the portal and alienate yourself from your team? Makes it more difficult to come back.

Calling him a cancer or a winovich is uncalled for though.

Allow me to respond to the Winovich thing since I’m the one who dropped that name. I didn’t call Tate that. In response to him being called “Baker Mayfield,” I chose to bring up the name of another brash college football player as a contrast to show “brash” doesn’t always mean good. Sometimes it’s just talk.

Tate is an ultra-talented athlete who is frustrated that he hasn’t had the chance to show what he can do yet at the college level. His confidence may very well be warranted. He went beyond confidence in his comments - he took shots at Justin Fields that were uncalled for. He’s young, I get it. But I’d like to think, if it’s ok for Ohio State fans to trash someone like the DeSales kid for his comments, we could at least express some disagreement with what Tate said.

How did OSU make the first move to distance themselves? By taking a 5 star recruit when the position group is very thin?

This is how I feel. I love Tate and really thought he would stay and battle for the starting spot. I wanted him to win it, but you are going to have to battle wherever you are and I don't see a reason for the white flag already unless there is something behind the scenes where he was essentially showed the door. Hell, maybe he will stay and fight for it, he has that chance if he wants to fight for it. Tate has definitely not handled this situation well on the public level, but he still has time to back off that stance and just let his game speak for itself.

But unless he does stay and fight for it, I can't really fathom this decision at this. You've been here for 2 years Tate, you have earned everyones' respect on the team, and you can win the job. I dont give a shit what Fields was ranked coming out of HS, you were a damn 5*, 50-something and 0 starter with 3 national championships and Gatorade player of the year before you came here and put in the work. Sure he isn't guaranteed the spot like he was without the Fields transfer, but I really don't see a world where Tate isn't the front runner heading into spring ball and given every chance to keep it. I just can't. And if Fields was "given" the spot coming in, which I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt...then shame on our staff. And if Tate is running because a formerly highly rated HS prospect is transferring but no assurances have been given, then that is on him. I have a TON of confidence in Tate Martell and I hope he does too.

I apologize for throwing out scenarios based on speculation because there is a lot that remains to be seen. I am hoping Tate is doing this to keep options open in case he does not win the starting job over the spring and that this does not lead to protracted drama. Fingers crossed.

I'm not going to speak about Martell directly. Kids come and go. What disappoints me is that there's not going to be a balls out competition in the Spring the way there was with Haskins and Burrow. You can't tell me that that doesn't make the winner sharper come Fall. I guarantee that it spurred Haskins in several different ways and made him the guy we saw last Fall.

why is everyone sleeping on Baldwin? Day hand picked this kid.

Late get. Less than compelling offer list. As for me, I've never seen a second of him playing and have no opinion on his ability.

Baldwin completed 24 of 30 passes for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns and added another score on a rush. Through three playoff games, he has completed 59 of 77 for 709 yards, nine touchdowns and just one interception. He missed the playoff opener against San Antonio Madison with an injury.

Numbers aside, Baldwin didn’t do it alone. Lanky junior speedster Garrett Wilson hauled in two touchdown passes and ran for another

this is the 6A playoffs. the kid can ball. Garrett Wilson signed on Dec 19.

This ............ I don't see any way in hell Day has promised Fields anything but a chance to compete. No coach worth a shat is going to promise anyone anything especially playing time. It doesn't work that way.

No way in hell he was offered anything more than that. I am as excited as anyone that Fields transferred here...but if he was told anything other than "Our current QB1 is Tate Martell and you have a chance to beat him out for the starting spot if you have a good spring/summer" then I am not ok. And I highly doubt there was anything further promised, I really do. Because if you disadvantage a player like Tate that has sweat and bled Scarlet and Gray on some bullshit like that...I would be beyond pissed. Tate should be the default starter and Fields should have the burden of beating him out. No bones about it.

I am all about playing the best guy and if Fields comes in and wins the spot convincingly, then play the best guy. But I just really think Tate has earned the nod up to this point and should be considered our starter until then. Tate should feel the same, he is a stud and could be our QB next year. Go fight for it Tate.

If it is true that Tate is on course to graduate this semester then entering himself in the transfer portal should only be an opportunity to see what his options might be. Transfer now and he has to sit a year. Transfer in May and he can play two years immediately as a grad transfer. I'm inclined to think he's a Buckeye at least through spring.

What is confusing to me is that, in his brief Ohio State history, he got more PT under Coach Day than he did under Urban Meyer. Day was the one that was inserting him in the second quarter of the first two games, to the chagrin of fans that wondered why Martell was getting PT in games that were still undecided. Day was the head coach when he went out and completed 10 consecutive passes against Rutgers. It wasn't until Meyer got back that his PT suddenly diminished and his role on the team was in flux.

I don't get it. I guess I thought he had a better rapport with Day at the helm than Meyer.

Swapped his Ohio State wallpaper to a crown on Twitter and set his status to "Quarterback at..." Whatever. I'm done. He gone.
