QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Former University of Tulsa quarterback legend Paul Smith has one year of NFL football under his belt.

Now he?s battling to make sure he has a second ? at least with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Smith?s father Ron Smith, who also is the Bartlesville High head football coach, said his son is working hard to keep his No. 3 spot with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Smith, who wears No. 12 and is listed at 6-foot-1, 202 pounds, was signed as a free agent last summer with the Jaguars.

He began his tutelage on the practice squad, but progressed to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart, where he remains, according to Yahoo Sports!

David Garrard holds down the No. 1 spot while recently-signed Todd Bouman, a 12-year league veteran, is listed at No. 2.

Bouman was inked May 5 to a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent from the Baltimore Ravens.

Last year?s back-up quarterback, Cleo Lemon, was released June 17.

Smith?s biggest challenge in holding on to his roster spot is former Ohio State signal caller Todd Boeckman.

Boeckman signed June 17 with the Jaguars as a rookie free agent. He reportedly also went through a tryout with the Cincinnati but was unsigned.

Boeckman was forced to the bench last season with the Buckeyes after being beaten out by Terrelle Pryor. The prior year (2007), Boeckman had been named All-Big Ten.

Like Paul Smith, Boeckman (6-5, 244 pounds) went undrafted.

Ron Smith, who is starting his fourth year with Bruin football, said Paul Smith feels confident in his competition against Boeckman.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed rookie quarterback Todd Boeckman and waived first-year quarterback Paul Smith today.

Boeckman, 6-5, 243, was originally signed by the Jaguars on June 17 and was waived on July 31. He was a two-year letterman at Ohio State where he played in 27 games, completing 255 of 402 passes for 3,041 yards and 31 touchdowns. He served as team captain as a senior and started the first three games. He earned All-Big Ten honors as a junior as he threw for 2,379 yards and 25 touchdowns and led the conference with a 148.04 passing efficiency.

A native of St. Henry, Ohio, Boeckman was a four-year starter at St. Henry High School where he threw for 7,021 yards and 64 touchdowns. He earned all-state honors in football, basketball and baseball. He graduated with a bachelor?s degree in consumer affairs in March of 2008.

I saw a bit of the Jags game the other day and Paul Smith looked like a candy-armed product of a spread offense from a weak conference. There is no way he can make all the throws you need in the NFL.

Don't know if he can make the reads as quickly as necessary but Boeckman has the arm. The way Garrard has looked in preseason, he may even get a chance to show it. Go Todd!

This is crazy. Jags release Boeckman on the 31st of July and now they sign him back up for one year before he even has a chance to prove his worth.
Kind of makes you wonder about how the NFL works. I was all set to go down to watch the practices of the Jaguars and then Todd is released before the went to camp. I was alittle pissed but now that he is back in the fold i hope to go an check him out before training camp is shut down to the public. I hope he gets a chance to stay on.

Boeckman is back

Del Rio finished his evaluation of third-string quarterback Paul Smith.

Smith was cut Sunday and replaced by former Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman, who is joining the Jaguars for the second time. He was originally signed June 17 and cut July 31. Now he has a shot at being a practice-squad player.

Del Rio put Smith in with 7:01 left in the game in Philadelphia, attempting to protect 32-27 lead. But his second play was an interception that set up a Philadelphia field goal. His second series ended in a punt, and the Eagles then drove for the game-winning field goal.

Del Rio said he put in Smith instead of sticking with backup quarterback Todd Bouman because the plan was to evaluate all the players.

Now the question is whether Bouman will keep his spot.

When asked if the Jaguars plan to replace Bouman, De Rio said, "No, we like Todd."

There have been published reports that the Jaguars are looking at other quarterbacks, including Tyler Thigpen of Kansas City, as a possible backup.

I guess they liked enough of what they saw back then. :)

Good news for Todd, at least he's going to make a little scratch in the league. Maybe it will lead to some playing time...
