RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

I think what's being neglected is that Beanie still needs reps. He's getting better every game...every carry it seems. Against Northwestern, he actually hadn't had very many carries, despite the score. So even though a few more carries in a blowout doesn't help you win that particular game, the extra work is going to help the team beat Wisconsin, for example. Obviously, there's a line between too little and too much and risking injury. If this game were in week 8 or 9, then yes, I would think that Beanie should have been pulled by halftime. Being this early, both in the season and his career, I can understand why they'd leave him in to carry the ball a few more times.

I would like to see him get around 25 per game at least for half the season if not longer. He can use more reps as he is only getting about 18 right now.

.... or we could run him into the ground with 40 carries per game like Mike Hart so that by the end of the season he cannot walk :wink2:

Wells aching, but Tressel says that's usual for RBs

By Doug Harris

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State running back Chris Wells told reporters after the Northwestern game last week that he's still affected by the ankle sprain that plagued him during the preseason, but coach Jim Tressel said the sophomore will just have to play with pain.
"I'm sure if you talk to Archie Griffin or Eddie George or any of those guys that carried the ball a lot, they'd tell you that it's probably Wednesday or so before they're really feeling good (after a game)," Tressel said. "They crank it up on Saturday, and then they're back in the tub until Wednesday. That's the nature (of the position).

Ohio State notes

COLUMBUS - Following Saturday's big win over Northwestern, Beanie Wells admitted his ailing left ankle still hurts whenever he makes cuts. If it's bothering him four weeks into the season, it's conceivable the ankle injury could linger throughout the regular season.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel isn't overly concerned if that's the case. In fact, Tressel conceded Tuesday that pain is to be expected when playing running back in the Big Ten.
"I'm sure if you talk to Archie Griffin or Eddie George or any of those guys that carried the ball a lot, they'd tell you that it's probably Wednesday or so before they're really feeling good and they crank it up on Saturday, and then they're back in the tub until Wednesday. I think that's the nature (of the position)," Tressel said. "You get hit pretty good when you're a running back. I'm hoping that like any great running back, that Chris is a warrior. I'm not hoping that he doesn't hurt, because that's usually not the case with running backs - they hurt."

I'd like to see him in the 15-18 range, especially if that means the offense has been clicking and Tressel can get him out of the game earlier....

I think 18 is a good number, we have Mo Wells and Saine when he gets better, so there's enough RB's to go around. Also, as someone pointed out, I don't want him to get broken down through the season to where he's hobbled come November 17th.

IMO, if his ankle is even a little bit still sore, there's no way you play him this saturday.

I mean i know its great to get him more reps and work him before the big games, but right now its just not worth it after he had hurt it last weekend. We have just way too many options against a team that we should handle anyways.

I disagree slightly only in that I am under the impression that his injury is no longer serious but it is lingering and will take months of off time to fully recoup. It comes across to me like a week or two of rest won't make it anybetter. If it has been there since Spring and has not fully healed, giving him the week off would do nothing to really help him out in recouping from this injury. I would rather give him some reps to keep him sharp.

BuckeyePlanet's General Opinion

Mike Hart carrying the ball too much early in the season means that he will not be fresh for games later in the season, such as Ohio State vs. Michigan. We should avoid having Beanie Wells carry the ball so many times.

John Cooper's General Opinion As Stated on Buckeye Blitz Last Night on ONN

If Mike Hart can carry the ball 40 times a game, Beanie Wells can. He needs to carry the ball more than 25 a game so he can make up for some of the practice he has missed.

*Sigh*

You would think that Coop would have learned by now that the last game in November is the most important game of the season. Why the heck would you give Beanie 40 carries against Nortwestern and Minnesota when he is dinged up????

He needs to officially be removed from any on air telecast after saying something as stupid as that. He make Lou Holtz prediction of ND having 8 wins look smart(well......maybe not)
