why would you bite someone?

I feel sorry for the rest of the opponents who come up against Wells this year - sure he's going to take this one personally (the kid has to feel as if he's carrying the entire team on his shoulders, and quite possibly is!) and will give some payback down the line.

We'll see what this young man is made of, no doubt. Hope he takes it easy on those legs of his - could carry a whole nation very soon!

Wells is expected

to play Saturday

Garfield standout senior running back Chris Wells missed Monday's practice due to personal reasons, coach Bob Sax said.

Sax also said Wells is expected to play in Saturday's game against GlenOak at Fawcett Stadium.

Hoban coach Ralph Orsini said Monday that his players did not bite Wells during Thursday night's 21-7 victory.

Wells' father, James, reported that his son had received a tetanus shot due a bite in the game.

Four-game event

set for Dix Stadium

The DFB Sports Gridiron Classic will consist of four high school football games Saturday at Dix Stadium.

The four-game schedule will include five teams from the area.

The complete schedule:

10 a.m. -- Columbia Station vs. Chippewa.

1 p.m. -- Manchester vs. Independence.

4 p.m. -- St. Thomas Aquinas vs. Rootstown.

7 p.m. -- Northwest vs. Columbus Eastmoor.

Beating No. 1 team common for Hoban

The last two home football games for Hoban -- contests played nine months apart -- have been memorable for the Knights and their fans.

In each case, Hoban has defeated the No. 1 team in the Beacon Journal Football Poll.

The second came at home last Thursday when Hoban beat Garfield 21-7. The Rams were No. 1 in the 2005 Beacon Journal preseason poll.

On Nov. 6, 2004, Hoban edged Buchtel 35-33 at home in the first round of the Division III playoffs. Buchtel was named No. 1 in the final 2004 Beacon Journal poll four days earlier.

St. Vincent-St. Mary will be playing its first official game at the renovated Green Street Stadium, was constructed in 1949, when it plays host to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin on Friday in its home opener.

The field has a new artificial surface and the stadium has new bleachers on each side with a new press box and new lighting. The cost of the renovations was nearly $2 million and is part of a $20 million capital improvement project.

when I was in high school hoban, st, v and massillon were the toughest places to play at but, the private schools have the officials doing the games never helped the visiting teams at all.

Like the garfield/hoban game, only one flagrant call. How many times and how long does a player have to be on the ground to keep taking hits or jumps on the pile after the play was down and the play was over.

I'm really surprised he just got a bruised up leg He's gonna be strong one in the big ten

Edit: Maybe he wasn't bitten, but it seems like a dumb thing to lie about (or can the doctor not confirm/deny a bite due to rights?) Obviously it would get me fired, but if I were the ref I would penalize the biter by making him stand there as Wells runs into him full tilt.

if you get a cleat cut.. and need stitches.. rest assured you're getting a tetanus... and there's game film.. so a coach wouldn't spout off in the paper if there is evidence that could show different... he'd say nothing.... so be fair.. and not jump to conclusions...

Garfield senior star set to play Saturday

Garfield senior running back Chris Wells is expected to play against GlenOak on Saturday at Fawcett Stadium, Garfield coach Bob Sax said.

Wells, an Ohio State recruit who gained 1,939 yards last season, injured his leg in the third quarter of the Rams' 21-7, season-opening loss at Hoban last Thursday. He left the game but returned and finished with 105 yards.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Wells did not practice Monday, but practiced Tuesday and Wednesday. He was a little sore but has felt better.

As GlenOak and Garfield prepare for Saturday's matchup at Fawcett Stadium, both teams feel they have something to prove.
The two teams lost their season-openers last week (Hoban defeated Garfield 21-7, and Hudson beat GlenOak 28-7), and neither wants to start out the season 0-2.

But someone will.

As for the status of Garfield senior running back Chris Wells? He's probable for the game. It was reported that Wells suffered a minor stress fracture in the Hoban game but Garfield coach Bob Sax said he had no knowledge of that and expects Wells to be ready to go against GlenOak.

Some would argue that Hoban's defeat of Garfield last week was surprising.
First, the Knights went into the game not knowing how their running attack would fare, now that former Mr. Football in Ohio for 2004 (Tyrell Sutton) has gone off to Northwestern.

Secondly, the Rams have Wells, an Ohio State recruit who rushed for more than 1,900 yards and 20 touchdowns last season.

Well, Hoban sophomore running back Steve Yoak rushed for a career-high 120 yards in his first varsity start and the Knights limited Wells to just a few big runs and he finished with 105 yards an no touchdowns.

``We watched the Hoban game film and we noticed that their defense isn't very big but they are quick,'' Golden Eagles coach Jack Rose said. ``We have a young defense so we really stressed to our guys that we have to do what Hoban did. We have to get a lot of people around (Wells.)

``You're not going to stop him, but you can try to contain him and that's what we need to do.''

Rose also feels his offense needs to be more consistent this week. The inconsistency against Hudson, he said, was disappointing.

``We'll have to play a lot better because this is a typical Garfield team,'' Rose said. ``They are quick and physical, they play hard and they'll be up for the challenge.''

Last week, the Rams were the top-ranked team in the first Beacon Journal top-20 poll of the season, but after the loss, they dropped to No. 6.
Sax knows his offense needs to make adjustments and the unit can't be one-dimensional.

``Over the weekend, as a staff, our main goal was to see who we could put in this week to get practice reps,'' Sax said. ``We need to be able to play more guys because (Hoban) wore us down in the second half. Right now, we just don't have the depth.

``Plus, we have to do a better job inside the red zone. We had the ball five times in the red zone (inside the 20) and only scored once. And on defense, we'll have to do a good job with our pass defense because GlenOak will spread the offense and throw 75 percent of the time. We have to try to keep their offense off the field.''

I'll delete this post AFTER tomorrow when his full stats are released but if you are like me you have to at least have some idea of whats going on right away :)

Garfield is leading 17-6 at halftime. Chris Wells has over 100 yards including an 81 yard TD scamper.

Garfield fumbled and GlenOak recoved on the Ram's 17 yard line. The Eagles scored a TD, but the 2 point conversion failed. Garfield 17-12 3 QT.

The Rams are drivin'. Boy the announcers on the radio are very critical of Chris Wells. The former Malone college coach keeps saying that Wells takes himself out of the game too much, BUT Wells just scored a TD. The 2 point try is no good.

Garfield 30
GlenOak 25

About 5 minutes left in the game.
