With Henderson, Williams and Pryor all on the depth chart in front of him, Hayden isn’t likely to see a lot of playing time as a true freshman. But he feels fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from them, too.

Suddenly, true freshman RB Dallan Hayden becomes important piece of Buckeyes' 2022 offense

True freshman running back Dallan Hayden met with the Ohio State media for the first time early in camp (Aug. 5). The Memphis native had no idea at the time that a week-and-a-half later, he would be the Buckeyes’ third-string RB.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Hayden was expected to be the No. 4 RB behind TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams and Evan Pryor. However, news surfaced on Tuesday that Pryor will miss the 2022 season with a knee injury. Many expected Hayden would redshirt this season. Now? You can toss that out of the window because he will be needed. Hopefully for OSU’s sake not too much, but he’s now the third and final scholarship running back on the roster.

The 4-star Hayden was ranked as the No. 24 RB and the No. 282 overall recruit in the country in the 2022 class, per the 247Sports Composite. (The in-house 247Sports rankings were a bit higher on him: No. 19 RB; No. 226 overall). The son of former NFL player Aaron Hayden, Dallan rushed for over 2,000 yards in both his junior and senior seasons in high school (2,012 yards, 24 TDs as a junior in 2020; 2,002 yards, 33 TDs as a senior in 2021).

Tony Alford on Ohio State freshman RB Dallan Hayden: 'He's gonna be a really good player'

“At running back, you need depth,” Alford said earlier this month. “You have to have depth. We've seen games where a couple guys in one game just go down. So you've got to have depth. So he (Hayden) was critically important.”

“I think he's a tough guy. I think he's tough,” Alford said of Hayden. “That's probably the thing that stood out the most is he's a tough guy. I've gotten to know the family, they instill that in him. His dad who, with Aaron, you can't try to be soft over there. You're going to have a problem in that household. So the best thing that probably impressed me the most is he's very serious about his business and he's a tough guy.”

"I think the more you play, obviously, the better," Alford said of that situation. "So I would like to think that, he did play a senior year, so that's an advantage to him. Now, the difference with Evan, the difference with Tre is they came in at the semester. So they had a little bit more time to mature into our program and sink their teeth into it because they were semester guys. But on the flip side, he (Hayden) played his senior year, they didn't. So it is what it is. We are where we are. There are no excuses for this and whether you played your senior year or didn't play your senior year. Now you're at Ohio State and we've got things to go do and no one really cares."

“He goes full speed. That's one thing,” Alford said of Hayden. “We're not going to have to ask him to go faster. He goes 100 miles an hour. Sometimes we got to try to pull the reins on him and back him down a little bit and slow him down. But that's probably the thing that's impressed me the most is he goes full speed. He only knows one speed and it's impressive. He wants to learn. He's a very, very hungry kid. He wants to do well. And so those are great traits. Those are great traits.

“He's very hard on himself. He's a guy that you can tell he wants to do things perfectly and it bothers him immensely if he doesn't.”

“Dallan popped a couple really good runs, which is good to see,” offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said when recounting the scrimmage. “Showed some really good speed. Had a couple of big ones, which was nice for him. He's learning, freshman, a little bit overwhelmed. But he's got some speed and explosiveness, so that was a nice deal.”

“He's gonna be a really good player,” Alford said. “I think he's got a chance to be really good. It's going to take some time… So he's got a chance. He's got some skills and he can run and he's just got to learn the game. Just learn the game. Settle down, take a deep breath. He's gonna be fine.”

I’ve always taken quotes like this to be coach speak for, “Talented but not ready”

Then I got to thinking about context

Henderson got his first taste of college ball against the passive, predictable 2021 defense.
Hayden is getting his 1st taste of college ball against the attacking, chaotic 2022 defense.

They’re very different players, so with multiple variables in play it will be difficult to draw conclusions, but it will be awfully interesting to watch how they develop from here.

players that have it rough starting out can take longer to develop confidence, but once they do they often have an edge to them that players with a smoother beginning often lack.

But Ohio State may not need Trayanum at running back if true freshman Dallan Hayden continues to show flashes on the field. Day said Hayden has asserted himself as the Buckeyes’ No. 3 option in Tony Alford’s position room behind TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams.

Hayden shed his black stripe to “officially” become a Buckeye over the weekend.

“Quite honestly we've been very impressed with Dallan. I think Dallan Hayden has really come on,” Day said. “He's been drinking through a firehose this preseason camp and he's had ups and downs, but I gotta tell you he's got a lot of talent. And he's our third running back right now, and he deserves it. He's played really hard, he's had his black stripe taken off, and so if he continues to grow, we're gonna trust putting him in the game.

“We're impressed with his camp. For a freshman to step in like this, he's gotta use this as an opportunity now that Evan's down.”

Ohio State offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Kevin Wilson said last Monday that Hayden “popped a couple really good runs” during the Buckeyes’ scrimmage on Aug. 13. The Tennessee native entered the program this summer as a four-star prospect and the No. 226 recruit in the country.

5 players had 20 or more carries last year. We're going to need at least 4 healthy RBs to get through the season with all the knicks guys take throughout the season
