Jeff Logan, a running back for the Buckeyes in the mid-1970s and former president of the Varsity O athletic alumni club, said it is important to send a message.

"Former players feel we still have a tremendous amount of pride and tradition that makes us still feel good about the program," Logan said. "And we want not so much the stadium or the nation to know, but for the players and coaches who are standing on that sideline getting ready to start another season to understand that regardless of what has happened in the last 12 months or so, that we support them wholeheartedly.

"I mean, this program is much bigger than what has happened in the last 12 months."

That said, Logan acknowledged that the past few months have been tough.

"I think embarrassment is the right term," Logan said. "In the past, we've always had to defend ourselves against critics from the (Southeastern Conference) and everywhere else, but that was a matter of going out there and playing on the field. The only way you could shut up the SEC people was to go out there and beat them.

"But when you have something like this, where you not only are perceived guilty but are guilty on certain fronts, it really hurts to the core of who we are and what we're all about."

I think they meant to say 'played on 4 Big Ten Championship Teams'.

'73, '74, and '76 were co-Big Ten Championship years, 1975 was an outright title.
