RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/112004/hig_17241181.shtml

Apopka 31, Sandalwood 21

Star of the night: Apopka's Tamaki Jackson blocked a punt and scooped it up for a 35-yard touchdown on the final play of the third quarter. The play gave the Blue Darters a 24-14 lead. Jackson later added a 5-yard touchdown run.

Turning point: Apopka opened a 31-14 lead when Jackson scored on his 5-yarder, essentially putting the Saints away.

On defense: Apopka held Saints star running back Maurice Wells to a career-low 31 yards. Led by linebacker Kadu Swift, the Blue Darters allowed Wells no runs of more than 10 yards. ... Apopka's Edward Sands made an interception that set up Jackson's game-clinching touchdown run.

Fast facts: Sandalwood defensive back/wide receiver Jamar Hornsby, a 6-foot-4 junior expected to be one of the area's top recruits next season, caught three touchdown passes from Saints quarterback Rusty Smith, accounting for all of his team's points. One was a 92-yard completion on an over-the-shoulder catch. ... Apopka advances to face Orlando Edgewater next week in a Class 6A regional championship. Edgewater beat Apopka 32-7 in the regular season.

They said it: "No.7 [Hornsby] is the best high school football player I've ever seen." -- Apopka coach Ty Ensor.

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/spor...,1,3774741.story?coll=orl-sports-headlines-hs

"Their defense outplayed our offense tonight," Sandalwood Coach Adam Geis said. "When you hold a back as good as Maurice to no run longer than 10 yards, you're pretty darn good."

What was expected to be a battle of Apopka's defense against Wells didn't really materialize. Wells, who ran for more than 3,000 yards as a junior and entered Friday's game with more than 1,800 yards ths year, did venture on a dozen occassions into Apopka's defensive triangle of linebackers and seemingly never emerged.

Now that was a game.

How could Maurice Wells have any doubt now? GA Tech got rolled by UVA and the Wreck are going nowhere fast.

OSU is going to win the NC in a couple of years!!! Come on down, Maurice!!!

Wells had to be blown away by the tradition and atmosphere in Columbus. And this is our "Crappy" team. Everyone comes back next year, and we clearly have the ability to light up the scoreboard. Yet what don't we have? A tailback. I love Pittman, but he'd be a better secondary speed back (we need a big back).

Wells has to like the chance to come in here adn be the missing link to an unbelievable OSU offense and NC aspirations.

No crowd cheers that loud on EVERY down on EVERY drive no matter where they are on the field.

With the fans as loud as they were and all the tradition of the game I am sure he was exposed too. I bet he met up with Archie and alot of other Alumni not shown. I had goosebumps and I wasn't even st the game. That had too at least get him thinking of how special it is to be a Buckeye. He could be a part of something truly special with all these great offensive line recruits opening up holes for him and then add on top of that great QB's and Wr's, and well then there is Teddy to pal around with ... I sure hope Maurice signs with Ohio State ...

It would be like trying to decide whether or not to sign with Oklahoma as a blue chip QB.

I say this kid is ours to lsoe after this game. Only a moron couldn't see that the only thing we were missing is a star back. With him in the game, OSU is up 30-14 at halftime.

And this wasn't even the typical OSU game either. not only was it senior day, and beat michigan day, but it was "be the SEC for a half" day. That first half was one of the wildest offensive explosions I've seen against two solid defenses ever in the big 10.

jwinslow - I don't think that Wells would be considered a big tailback. Nonetheless, I would love to see him choose OSU. I saw him briefly before the game and he appeared to be taking it all in.

rivals had a recruiting video about weekend visits to osu. one of the highlighted segments was wells. it was taped before he left. He didnt sound really all that high on osu, citing that osu likes to use a big back and has never used a back with his running style. he stated he would have to see the depth chart and look at how he would be used.

he sounded less than enthused about osu as a whole.

I guess I'm a moron, because our failure to punch it in from 1 or 2 yards out wasn't because of our running backs, but because that was the only time of the game where the OL didn't get drive off the snap. A couple of the Michigan DL, especially Watson, seemed to be in our backfield at the handoff. Even Maurice Wells would not have been able to run it in. Only Clarett may have been able to, and even that's a maybe.

You are right. I didn't think he was a bruiser, but I thought he was a little larger than I have learned from more research. Either way, we need a feature back which I don't know if Pittman is ready to be. I think he could be great as a complement to a lethal passing attack (which ours could be but has to prove it is that way consistently), but not a guy who can pick up 100 yards when the d sets out to stop him.

In that sense, I think Wells could be a huge back for us. But I was very wrong about his size. My apologies (too much time lusting after Stewart that I hadn't read much about wells specifically).

It was the OL's fault no doubt. But I feel like at lesat one of those scoring drives (especially the one that became a 5 yard goalline after Fumdell Ross) would have been different with a different back. I guess I felt like only Joe struck fear into the UM DC in terms of running teh ball. However, I was at the game and couldn't see the breakdown of the blocking and such, I'm waiting to see the tape.

I'll assume you're right since I'm sure you saw it better and know more than I regarding blocking.

I guess my ultimate point was that it had to be apparent that the only thing we still need is a runnign back. The OL was the problem on those goal line stands, but imagine how much more terrified our opponents will be if we were able to run the ball 8-20 yards with a RB as well, forcing their DC to consider focusing on Holmes/Ginn/Smith/RB on every play. That would be scary.

That's the tOSU coaches challenge in a nut shell. They are going to have to show MoW where he fits in to the tOSU system and how he can be an every down back with the Bucks.

That's been my question about him as well. Stewart seems more our style of back, as does Gwaltney. Another size concern is about blocking on passing downs. We were more effective with BJoe in our single back set this week because he can blow people up. Mo Wells versus a B10 linebacker doesn't sound like a brilliant idea to me.

You need the brusier back if your line can't create holes... if you have the line that OSU will have, a finesse speed back will cause fits for any league, including B10... he'd do fine...

examples... Pitman is not a bruiser... Hart is not a bruiser.. Archie was not a bruiser... they are/were backs with great vision and ability to find the hole...

Mo Wells will do just fine...

Play Def coord... facing immense speed at WR/slot (Ginn, Holmes, Gonzales).. immense speed in the backfield (Mo and Troy)... how do you defend against speed... if it's coming at you from every spot on the field...
