RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

Wells is an exciting young player. A lot of people have compared him to Warrick Dunn. In terms of Buckeyes (or at least recent Buckeyes) I'd probably say Michael Wiley, although I think Wells has the potential to be more. His speed is pretty well known, but he's got laser quick cuts and nice balance. If you're talking all time Buckeyes, I'll say, with a caveat, Archie Griffin. The caveat is, I really don't want to compare anyone to Archie, but Wells has comparable size, nice instincts, and great cutback ability. He should've been a 5-star (he was at one point), was a huge get in this recruiting class, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do in the Scarlet & Gray.

Pittman already has proved that he is a very good back. Haw is a big back that we're all looking forward to see. Add Wells to the mix, and we have a RB stable that just won't quit. Even without Gwaltney, I think that trio revials most other teams' backfields.
Yeah, I agree with you here, Mililiani (I just followed your link from Sacosuds's premature thread). Several people have been bemoaning the fact that we've only got three scholarship tailbacks, but the potential for each one of these guys looks to be pretty exciting. If the O-line can play at the level where they finished '04, we could see in the very near future a three-headed monster from the tailback position, with some slice 'n dice from Wells, some bash 'n burn from Haw, and shake 'n bake from Pittman. True, there aren't any 230 lb. road graters back there this year, but man, do we have some speed (and Haw, at 210, can bring some lumber).

A couple more thought on Maurice Wells. The kid is going to be a star. Forget the Army All America game. He got like two carries, both sweeps to the outside, with no blocking whatsoever. That's the kind of play that Barry Sanders (probably the most elusive back ever to carry the pigskin) would break for a 40 yard gain one time out of fifteen, and the other fourteen times would be taken down for a loss. Wells got two cracks at it. Based on the footage I've seen of Wells, where he stands right now, few D1 players could take him down in the open field. He's ready to contribute, and after he gets some time with the Buckeyes training staff, look out!

Add to that, the fact that OSU's offensive line is finally coming into it's own, and adding a few new monsters. Then add to that, the fact that OSU will have a big bruising, healthy Fullback by the name of Dionte Johnson opening up holes for these RB's and OSU is going to be able to run with anybody out there ... period !!!
Oh I shudder at the thought of getting Wells-times-two the following year .... it just keeps getting better and better each year doesn't it?? It's great to be a Buckeye !!!

Any kid who leads the state of Florida in rushing is BIG TIME!
Florida class 6A; you could make a decent argument that there is no higher calibre of high school football played in the country. To post the numbers he posted with that competition is pretty impressive.

(rip-off from Rivals)
"I think it comes down to one word – speed. He blows the door open and nobody can catch him. He has a 4.35-second time in the 40 on a track and he’s so fast it’s scary. He also has about only two percent body fat. He’s built like a rock and has the ability to run between the tackles and around everybody, too." -Sandalwood coach Adam Geis
