RB Roderick Smith (Official Thread)

There are some backs I've seen over the years that you can just tell are special the first time you watch them move with the ball and hit the hole. I get that impression when I watch Smith. I really enjoy watching him run the ball and I think he has a ton of talent. It's therefore pretty upsetting that he can't seem to hang on to the ball; his opportunities will always be limited until that is corrected.

That's an understatement.
If Dunn is healthy, smith may see very few carries if any. Meyer doesn't stand for fumbling. And pt will be harder to come by in the future with Elliott and Marshall coming in. Its a shame too, smith should be a beast

who knows, remember what urban did after hyde fumbled. maybe smith won't be "doghoused" after all

Hyde's fumble came after running for 100+ yards and came as a direct result of trucking the defender.

Smith's fumble came because he never secured the ball during the handoff and he didn't have 100 yards yet.

I feel the same way when Rod is in the game as far as just having that presence which is why it's too bad he can't seem to hang onto the ball. He's really been picking up big gainers the last few weeks and I'd hate for him to be on the bench because he can't hang onto the ball.

On another note though Adrian Peterson couldn't hang onto the ball either (mind you I'm not saying he's as good) but he was able to work through it with more reps. I think because we can't afford any turnovers because of a under performing and surprisingly poor defense he's going to be put on the bench in favor of someone who's more reliable. That's just another cause/effect of having a defense that just isn't up to standard.

Marshall isn't going to play running back.

Hyde is going to get a ton of carries next year and they are well deserved. He runs with attitude.

I understand Marshall won't play rb primarily. But he's playing a hybrid position where he will be called upon to carry the ball, whether by options, screens, out of the backfield or even in the wildcat. Meyer has made no secret that Marshall will be used like Percy harvin, and harvin took a number of carries from the rbs. As I believe Marshall will.

And I don't think any rb will get a ton of carries in urbans system. I think we'll have a committee, and lets not forget that Braxton will get a number of carries too. When it's said and done, few carries would be left for smith(assuming he's in the doghouse for fumbling). After carries for miller, Hyde, brown, Marshall, Dunn and possibly ball or Elliott, there's hardly anything left

When did Coach Meyer say that?
Um... coaches can't say anything about unsigned athletes before signing day. But various sources have said that Marshall and Zeke have told they would be used in the Percy Harvin position. As Bill Lucas says, it isn't a secret.

To me it seemed like Rod was getting a little too comfortable and started focusing more on the running and got a little loose with the ball. Hopefully he doesn't get put back into the doghouse because he is needed in the backfield. As great as Hyde has been, Rod seems to bring speed that Hyde doesn't have for both being big powerful backs. I love the one two punch of Hyde and Smith pounding on defenses the whole game.

Couldn't agree more. I love how Rod has been running the last couple of weeks and it seemed like he was playing a little bit harder last night being back in his home state. But, that is just me speculating...
