first and foremost-usc and usc fans, congrats. youve got some great players and a great ball club. enjoy the ride folks, its a great time to be a usc trojan.

expectations-their was a time when all i wanted was a win over michigan, i swore i could deal with 9-3 as long as we beat the winged helmet. their was also a time that the goal was a big ten title and a rose bowl berth and resulting victory. i just checked we havent been to the rose bowl since 1997, kids these days dont want to go to the rose bowl, well not every year. i still find that odd.

i guess you have to lay out what your expectations are. the bar is the big game, the week after the first of the year. i am reminded of a john wooden story in which in 1974 the ucla bruins steam rolled their way in to the final four only to be knocked off. not a big deal? well theyd won the previous 7 national titles, the following year the bruins rolled to the title again, making it 8 of 9 and 10 of 12. as wooden was on the court with his team a fan ran up to coach wooden and said, "coach you disappointed us last year but we won it this year." think about that. or maybe it could be put simpler, i went to the grand canyon with a co worker and they talked the whole time how they wanted to see it and how excited they were, we got their, gout out of the car. they looked around and were ready to go, i didnt understand. "i thought itd be bigger" sometimes expectations are hard to meet, needless to say harder to exceed.

the game-usc won, they scored more points. congrats to them.

the postgame-no idea i quit on the game with 2 minutes to go, the last time i did that was when i left the shut out in michigan, i left the 94 psu game during the 3rd quarter. thats 3 times in what 14 years?

where do you go from here-
choices
1-quit
2-mail it in
3-go to your senoirs, give them pt
4-stats quo
5- youth movement.

i think id do something different. the team is graded on every play and recieve a grade for the game. winning perfromances are awarded to those who meet a certian thresh hold. personally id say if you dont make your winning performance, you dont start. not that you cant play only that you lose your spot to the next guy and have to earn it.

missing- im not the football expert many of you are. i do know a couple of players have gone missing. ones that no one here as mentioned. i feel comfortable someone has gone terry glenn on his teammates. unwilling to make the play for fear of injury... he wasnt the only one, but one of the ones i havent heard much about.

qb- see my theory above. why i dont feel that bad about it, i still say you go week to week, dont get a winning performance, your out.

3rd down- i believe we started the game 5-8 and from that point on, remember i didnt see the final drive, their was not another 3rd down conversion.

coaching staff- im sure theirs a rumor, reality is maybe we have a younger staff than weve had before. the last few years weve lost a lot of coaches to other teams, nfl or who have moved on to be coridinators and cordinators who have moved on to head coaching spots. reality is the staff changes nearly every year, so thats not the odd thing that will happen. maybe its time to shake up the sturcture/make up of the coaches and their responsibilities.

injuries- hopefully rehring is ok. i held my breath when sanchez went down, got up slow and limped around. i hate to see kids get hurt. hate it, more than my team losing...

"it"- this team doesnt have "it" nor have the teams the past two years.

competitive composure- walking the fine line between out of control and in control, playing on the edge. playing up to your best, causing havoc, playing a game of escalating collisions. ken hitchcock loves that saying, ive come to admire it. i dont see it. i dont see guys flying around making plays, under control. examples that stick in my mind, chris spielman-[censored]ing himself so he wouldnt miss a snap, aj hawk flying to the football, orlando pace/k stringer, whilhelm scarpinig across the field and burying a guy-driving the man into the ground and attacking the football, maurice clarrett busting his ass to take the football away from the miami defender on the int return, do you get that point? i dont see it out of this team...

the tyson walter/rob murphy effect- i was never a fan of a guy getting beat, getting his qb hit, and then when the qb gets blasted he goes over and drills the guy, buries him. you hit my qb and ill kill you approach. tyson and rob didint always save it for the next play. those two played with a passion and fire, they didnt play with competitive composure, they played over the line. but for some reason i miss that. do you think those guys whod let their qb get hit late, sacked, knocked down, buried as he tried to make the tackle on his int as others stood and watched, then get buried by a second man, watching as a guy leaps in to celebrated the td? nope, they wouldnt have stood for that. yet how many players quit on that play...

when the tough gets going- im not really sure, 2 drives with a first down in the second half probably isnt what the tough do though and one of those was for negative yardage... 25 yards of offense in the second half. thats 75 feet folks...

changes- things are always changing, no doubt in my mind had the game been won you would have seen change. the question is what will change?

kick off classic meadowlands, miami fl - ill admit it, i said it. the same thing i said as i sat in the upper deck in the game against the hurricanes. i said, ill admit it...

why usc won- they scored more points...

where now?- this is an interesting point, something that has been a long time since a team was taken out back and spanked early in the year, the way the team rebounds or doesnt will be interesting. i think we will find out a lot about these kids, adversity brings out great things in kids, or reveals what they are really made of...

power- upon further review i could never be amish.

maybe more to come later- today/this week and in weeks to come...

hurricanes/flooding- my weekend was thousands of times better than many, who lost love ones, homes, families and communities...

When I was at OSU it was all about beating scUM, winning the Big Ten, winning the Rose Bowl. The "national championship" was just the last poll of the year.

Now, it's all about "the NC" on TV, internet message boards, you name it. The current generation knows nothing else. The Rose is just another bowl game, a consolation prize for failing to get a bid to play for the "NC". We saw that last year after we lost to Illinois and appeared to be Rose Bowl bound.

their was a time when the title was awarded before the bowl game also...

I love the "youth movement" suggestion you give. If someone doesn't grade out at a winning grade, let a freshman play or another yungun'. It wouldn't be fair to pull guys like Lil Animal or Jenkins, because that would kill us. However certain guys at QB, OL, DE, DT, and WR should be given close examination and have to worry about the talent behind them. I also agree with the Wilhem's and Speilman's...I didn't see that kind of determination out of anyone Saturday night besides Malcolm Jenkins, Lil Animal, and Terrelle Pryor. The '08 recruiting class is as excited as I have ever been about a recruiting class. Of course this class is unbelievably talented, but for me that's not what gets me the most excited. What I love about this class was the chemistry and work ethic coming in. All of these guys were already brothers coming in and had nothing but National Championships on their mind. Guys like Brewster, Pryor, Posey, etc. seem so dialed in and determined, on top of being great talents. So in other words, I wouldn't mind seeing them come in and get some serious PT if the guy ahead of them isn't getting the job done. Great post.

wrong, you have to everyone who doesnt grade out. you cant pick and choose. the impact of picking and choosing isnt good for team chemistry. its a fair way to do it.

I agree with this being a huge reality check and we needed it. We don't need to go to the damn NC game every year, regardless if it's a win or a blowout. Sometimes you just need to go to a Rose Bowl or something along those lines to keep you humble. It's all not over for us either, with the big loss we don't have everyone in the country breathing down our necks. Look at programs like USC and UF a couple of years ago. They had talent, but they weren't great. Hopefully it will be a quick turnaround and we will have caught up with everyone. I'm still damn proud to be a Buckeye fan!

.

I'm assuming you forgot Dan Herron. He was busting his ass, taking hits and making the SC defense hit him with more than 1 player before he went down.

I realize everyone has to grade out at a winning performance, I'm just saying those guys probably will and their leadership is still huge. I don't see Malcolm Jenkins or Lil Animal getting bumped is all I'm saying. Yes, talk is cheap but I'm just saying I'm excited about the '08 guys. They have to prove it but I just want to see them get the chance. And yes, Herron played hard.

if they dont grade out, they dont start. not saying they wont play. if they are great leaders theyll accept that, spend a drive or two a quarter, what ever on the bench and root their team on. this team hasnt executed and put the needed effort in vs ohio and usc, the ysu gameis hard to tell due to pure talent level differences.

you have every right to be. but, what you did has in hs means nothing, not a lick. ask kirk ferentz, ask the kids at notre dame.

i did not mention one kid by name except the one who was injured and one who appeared to be injured. i dont really care if a handfull of guys played well, if a kid look engaged, the team didnt play as a group, they didnt play to the best of their ability for the second straight week. thats what matters. if i felt they played hard, worked as a team and stuck without id be glowing...

The reality check for me is that a whole lot of people looked at the schedule, rahter than the team, when they were all saying "everything leads to 2008". Yes, we get PSU and Meatchicken at home, and yes, USC was on the road but they lost 7 picks to the first 2 rounds. That, unfortunately, raised expectations to a level that just wasn't appropriate for this group of players we have. It also shows me the stupidity of the average moron out there, saying that Saturday somehow says something about the last 2 years. It doesn't. Every team is different, and this one had expectations based on past performance and what was seen as a favorable schedule. This wasn't an undefeated team waiting to happen...it just wasn't. Does that mean the Troy Smith team didn't belong in the NC game? One has nothing to do with the other. Period.

I in no way am saying I am giving up on this team in any fashion, but like 2004, the expectations need to be tempered a bit. So far we've squeaked by a MAC team and gotten killed by the #1 team...we know little about where we fall in between, and won't until we hit the conference slate. We could win the Big Ten, or be playing in a lesser bowl...time will tell. The mark of a good team (and more clearly, good coaching) is to finish as a better team that you started. We'll need to do that to accomplish the goal of the Big Ten title...Tressel will be earning his money this year after the USC game if this team rebounds and makes a big run late.

reality check indeed...

i planned to watch the game again last night. unfortunately i had no power. but from what i can remember, here's my take on the game:

the good:
1. i liked the offensive game plan. though i would have liked to see pryor throw a little more.
2. the lil animal. while ive supported him from his all but start against scum to now. ive never rated him as highly as some others and was actually a little shocked when he won the butkus. but he really impressed me last night. its very true that he struggles to get off blocks at times. but he is bringing the wood in a way he hasn't in the past and i like it. alot.
3. jenkins. like the lil animal, he's always been a kid i liked. but i always saw him as a little over rated. but this season he is really starting to live up to the billing. i really liked the way he played against USC and thus far this year. if he continues in this fashion i might be willing to consider his name alongside guys like springs and winfield. we're not there yet... but maybe.
4. checkwa. the more i see him play the more i smile. oh and more man coverage please.
5. herron's running. tough, fast, downhill. it pleases me. i am pleased.
6. pryor. he is as billed. this also pleases me.

the bad:
1. blitz recognition and pick up. guys who i know for a fact are guilty of missing blocking assignments: boone, browning, saine, and herron. id bitch about boone, but i really only saw 1 that he missed. there might have been 2 others but im not entirely sure those were his. i didn't play much oline. personally, i would have liked to have seen a little more of mo wells. but i really like the effort that was given.
2. holding and false starts. most were drive killers or worse yet, took points off the board. in fairness, several of the holding calls were weak at best while the USC oline was getting away with absolute murder. but, thats just the way it goes sometimes.
3. no beanie. no, i din't think he would have ran for eleventybillion yards. in fact, where i think we missed him the most was blocking. i saw saine miss 2 blitzes and herron atleast that many. the crappy part about being young is every now and then you look your age. so your rs freshman tailback got beat on a blitz by sr mauluga... yep. id poke fun but...

the ugly:
1. 35 points allowed.
2. 3 points scored.
3. hartline stupid open twice for layup tds.
4. russell. he reminds me a little bit of freeman his first year back from knee surgery. while ive had knee inguries before, ive never had anything as severe as an acl tear. but i can understand why it takes so long to come back mentally. i just hate seeing him play at less than 100% because i really like the kid.
5. heacock. should i be mad at him and the way his d played? should i be proud of him and the way his d played? i honestly don't know. realistically they just held usc to 28 points. thats not bad. if you told me before the game our d would hold usc to 4 td's with 2 turnovers and force a turnover, id be pretty damn happy. guess im going to have to hold my tongue a little while longer.

the facts of the matter. usc didn't do anything cute because just like lsu before them, they didn't have to. they took advantage of mismatches like any intelligent coaching staff does. they attacked our dline because they are young and inexperienced. they attacked our safties because they too are young. this was hines 3rd game and coleman's first game back. and its a no brainer to take a shot at russell. of course they went after boeckman. he's not particularly mobile and if you can take away the short pass the odds of getting to the qb before he can get the ball away is rather high so long as you blitz wisely. as much as i like pryor, he isn't ready to lead just yet. so you contain when he's in the game, and you blitz like a mofo when he isn't. if we were able to pick up one, maybe 2 of those blitzes and get the ball to the stupid wide open hartline. well then, im thinkin we have a football game. but at this point thats beyond wishful thinking.

*shrug* ugly loss to usc or no, i like this team. i like the direction the o is going and i really like the players. it doesn't hurt that the ol bandwagon might be a little lighter now that the weather has turned a tad less fair.

What I'm still trying to figure out is, how do teams make our O-line look so bad? The players there are incredibly talented and have been highly recruited in the past. What are other teams exploiting there to get to the QB so much?

Maybe they know what is coming? :ohwell:

"They did everything we saw on film, nothing changed," said USC linebacker Rey Maualuga

"Their offense is pretty easy to figure out." Pete Carroll

"They gave us the same look we practiced and prepared for, and we hit it just like we did in practice. Nothing changed." USC QB Mark Sanchez

Not to mention that the average start of a Trojans Drive was their 40. Pretending that I didn't see the game I would say that I would be happy with that. Unfortunately I saw the game and didn't have that good feeling when it was going down.
