Recording Digital Camcorder to DVD

I have an issue that I don't know how to correct, so I decided to turn to my fellow BPers with the computer experience and expertise. I am burning film from our Digital Camcorder to DVD, and I am using Nero to do it. I also used Sonic with no progress as well. When I go to view the burned DVD on my normal DVD player, it is of very poor quality and it is not how I want family videos to look when attempting to capture time and memories. I am curious how to improve this so I lose no quality in the transfer. I called Best Buy and the guy in the computer department told me I need to go to Pinnacle plus the additional hardware, however it seems costly. I do not want to purchase it and have the same results without significant difference in quality. Thank you in advance for your help.

What type of connection are using to go from the camera to the computer... firewire/1394 IEEE? and... what type of camera is it?

What program are you using to capture on the computer before you burn to DVD?

I'll try to help and I'm sure some others can too.... you can also check out this web site... they'll have all kinds of answers.

Thanks for your help fellas, I really appreciate it. I am using Nero Start Smart to capture, and also tried Sonic. Both looked like ass. I used USB cable to connect my camcorder to my computer, so it sounds like that may be a big part. Where do you find Firewire?

As far as my camera goes, it's a Sony DCR-TRV140. Again, you guys rock. :banger:

Yeah ya definitely wanna use firewire. Does your computer have firewire ports? You can get a firewire cable from just about any computer place, staples, circuit shitty, office max, etc. Make sure to get a 4 to 6 pin, so the one end plugs into your camera. Here is an example. Dont buy monster, cause they will rape you on price, but this is just so you know what to get.

That's most likely your problem. USB can not handle the transfer of video, it's too slow. Firewire ports are shaped like this and most of the time they are on the back of the computer...

If you don't have one on your computer you can get a firewire card and install it pretty easily and they aren't that expensive....

that should take care of the problem

EDIT: Bmax beat me too it... I was too busy looking for pics :)

Oh, man, you guys are tits (great). You have NO idea how much noise you just saved me at home with the ol' lady. Just a couple more questions...

  • Can you get the hardware at many of these same stores?
  • Is Nero sufficient in providing high quality capturing, or should I upgrade/change programs?
Thanks, again, boys. I sure hope I can help you out down the line. I'm trying to do my part in seeding the Full Game Downloads, but that only benefits everyone else... :)

Yeah you can get firewire cables/cards at any place that carries computer hardware. Even Walmart.

I have never captured with Nero, but I dont see why it wouldnt work just fine. I usually use Ulead visual studio, or something along those lines. But you should be able to use Nero without a problem.

no problem

Ulead is a good program.... I've never captured with Nero. I used Pinnacle Studio 9... for a while. Not a bad little program to get started with. I still use it to make slide shows of my kids from time to time... it has all kinds of fun transitions you can use between pictures. You can also make DVD's with menus and things like that.

Not really, sarcasm for "I must be dreaming". I hooked up the Firewire and I can already tell what a diffrence it will make. I went to Best Buy and bought the Geek Squad version of both the card and the wire. However, when I got home I actually found a Firewire port on the front of my machine (I originally looked in the back). So now I can take that hardware back and just use the Firewire. If I would not have asked here, I would have spent $200 bones and would have been the proud owner of a buinch of stuff I didn't really need. I really owe you guys some beers if we ever meet up in person. God, I love fellow Buckeyes. I would've never been able to get this information if I was a WVU Mountaineer! :slappy:

OK, of course ANOTHER snag. After everything was finished, perfectly I might add, it said the disk I used was incorrect. I have DVD+R disks (which worked when I was using the USB cable to record), what kind do I need? I wish there was some sort of definite help within Nero, but I looked and couldn't figure out what kind to use. I assuming at this point I need DVD+RW, but I just want to make sure before I go blow another 35 bones on them. ONCE AGAIN, thanks in advance. :)

If it's the same DVD+R you used the first time you'll have to put in another DVD+R. With the DVD+R's you can only use it once. If you record on it at all... it's done. The DVD+RW's you can erase and use over and over. Try puting in a new DVD+R and see what happens.

You can always find cheap DVD+R online instead of buying them at Best Buy... cases too. This is a great site to order from....
