Over on the O-Zone there's an article on recruiting rules. In it coach Peters talks about a kid they were recruiting , who committed else where. Now it seems this kid has had a change of heart. Any ideas who this might be?

Time for Football Recruiting Rules to Catch Up with Basketball
By John Porentas

The summer doldrums are upon us. College sports are at rest, at least as far as the games go, and that means that the only college sports news out there is of the off-the-field variety. The only game that is ongoing is the recruiting game in both football and basketball.

While the goals are the same in both sports, get the best players possible, the rules governing recruiting are not the same. Football has retained the single signing period format while basketball has adopted a policy of an early signing period and a late signing period.

Football recruiting has changed but the rules have not. Not so long ago players were for the most part evaluated after their senior season seasons and recruiting began in earnest after high school football was over. Signing day was in May. Now, however, recruiting is nearly a year-round process and both players and coaching staffs are making decisions earlier and earlier. A couple of coaches on the Ohio State football coaching staff, including recruiting coordinator John Peterson, say that there are some very good reasons why football should take a serious look at the way that basketball does things.

"You have more kids making earlier unofficial visits during the months of May and June," said Peterson.

"They're seeing a lot more earlier in the process and feel comfortable with their decisions by their senior year," Peterson said.

The trend toward earlier visits and commitments is driven by several factors, not the least of which is the competition for scholarships. While elite football players have their choice of scholarships, the vast majority of high school football players do not fall into that category, and there is a growing rush for the limited number of full rides available, particularly as that number of rides has been systematically reduced through NCAA scholarship reductions in recent years.

"Parents and everyone are now on that page," said Peterson.

"They know that they see kids lose scholarships because schools fill up. Now you have parents looking at three good offers from schools and such-and-such a school hasn't offered, they want to get something nailed down so they jump on one of those offers and don't wait for that offer," said Peterson.

The rush to secure scholarships has contributed to the rush toward early commitments, and according to Peterson, has also contributed to the parity level in college football.

"Sometimes you don't get to see a player play his senior season," said Peterson.

"They jump at a scholarship early in the recruiting process to get something nailed down, then they blossom in great football players. These are 17-year old kids. Some of them gain 20 pounds and get faster and become great football players, but they're already committed elsewhere and you miss out on them. That's one reason why there's a lot more parity in college football today, because of that," said Peterson.

Despite the apparent downside to an early decision, it is the trend, and of course there is an upside to it all for both athletes and coaches. Players can nail down scholarships and coaches can lock up players early and have some idea of the shape of their recruiting class. The next step, according to Peterson, is to allow schools to actually sign players.

"There are a lot of good reasons for that, among them cost containment," said Peterson.

"We spend money every year continuing to 'recruit' players that are committed to us. We continue to call them, visit them at their schools and homes, that all costs money," said Peterson.

Another issue is negative recruiting. According to OSU defensive coordinator Jim Heacock, most negative recruiting takes place with players who are already committed to a school.

"One of the toughest times is after a kid commits," said Heacock.

"That's when the vultures come around. That's when you have to watch out. They try to steal those kids and that's when it gets crazy," Heacock said.

Heacock and Peterson agreed that an early signing period would lower costs and also eliminate some of the seedier side of recruiting.

"There's a signing period for junior college players in December. I think that would be a good time to be able to sign the players who are already sure of where they want to go to school," said Heacock.

According to OSU assistant basketball coach Dan Peters, the early signing period concept has worked well in basketball. It has in fact reduced the problems of negative recruiting and the necessity of continuing to recruit a player who is committed.

"If they tell you they are going to come and there is no early signing period, then you're still recruiting those kids," said Peters echoing the thoughts of both Peterson and Heacock.

"The other thing is that if you get somebody who signs early and he plays a certain position. If you're trying to put your team together you know you've already got somebody at that position, so now you can go out and somebody who compliments that. If you get somebody you can ask him who he'd like to play with and if he knows anybody certain guys. In the long run, that can help you with team chemistry, that type of thing," said Peterson.

Peters also commiserates with the problems the football coaches have keeping unsigned players who have committed to sign at a later date.

"I think that is a matter of ethics," Peters said.

"If a kid says he is going someplace I think you should back off. We have a kid right now who we are recruiting who made a commitment to a school, so I called his coach and told him that this would be the last phone call from us. I said that if he changed his mind to let me know. I can tell you that since that time he has changed his mind, so in that case we're back in on that kid, but I think the guys who are ethical will back off once a kid commits," said Peters.

Peters' concept of ethical recruiting works...in theory, but in the real world not everybody plays by the same rules, including the ethos of football and basketball recruiting.

"When you're a school like Ohio State you don't have to be unethical. We have an awful lot to offer. We have a tremendous institution," said Peters.

"The reality is that there's a bunch of bad guys sometimes in this business," Peters said.

Basketball allows players to sign in November, then again in the spring after the season. Peters likes that system, but says that it does have its downside too. It means that recruiting targets have to be identified sooner, and that, said Peters, sometimes leads to mistakes.

"Sometimes there are kids that you aren't recruiting as a freshman or sophomore that become a good player by the end of his senior year, and you might not have a scholarship available. That's the downside. The other downside is that kids change. Some of them stop maturing, some stop growing, some lose interest, whatever it is. It's difficult," said Peters.

"That happens, but that's the risk/reward. In basketball, it's changed an awful lot because kids are committing earlier," said Peters.

Now that's true of football as well, and it's time for the NCAA to look at an early signing period in that sport just like basketball.
