Recruiting Issues (Merged)

Don't we have bigger things to worry about?

You have a point, but I think what this thread is about is the ever increasing hype and overall environment surrounding these high school kids and how it is being viewed. It sounds trivial, but its not trivial to the staffs and people who devote time to these kids to try to recruit them to their schools.

His PC was one of the most "colorful" I have seen in recruiting.....it got ugly real quick. Personally, I like the kids who fax their LOI in and thats it, no hype, media attention, just fax it and go to class.

That instantly takes me back to a new article a few years back when MDA announced. Another top recruit that year had a press conference just because he narrowed down his list to 5 schools. Someone asked MDA if he was going to have one and his response was shock as he was just a high school football player.

Don't we have bigger things to worry about? I'm sure all of us were the most respectfull and civilized 17/18 year olds on the planet. Come on, I did far worse as a young adult.

You most likely didn't do your "far worse" things on purpose in front of news conference and people who had been after your services for a year or more. Do you think Woody, Bo, or Ara would've tolerated that shitthat Logan-El pulled?

Most teenagers do things they shouldn't at one time or another...that's part of growing up. But that stunt this ass-monkey pulled was pure punkish egotism...it was far from a normal part of youth.

I honestly don't understand how recruits can pull such stunts as the hat drop and such...

Being a Div. 3 athlete, as I've said before, I received a ton of calls...although absolutely nothing like the attention these players receive. Despite the fact I didn't receive their level of attention, I still felt obligated to go to some of these colleges. I recognized that these coaches were wasting time form their personal lives to drive a few hours in crappy weather to watch a dual and speak with me. If I was treated with free plane trips and amazin food and all the other great things that come with visits it'd only make it more difficult.

When it was all said and done, I felt horrible to have to tell some of them no, to the point I couldn't confront them, so sent e-mails and left messages on the answering machine, never in my dreams could I picture insulting these people. I recognized and appreciated the attention given.

I really do beleive that these kids are being TAUGHT to be assholes by some recruiting guru's because it'll put the students name in the papers, and there is no such thing as bad press when trying to get your name out I guess.

I'm surprised a class act like Joe Paterno allowed this kid to sign with Penn State. If some jackhole pulled that shit and committed to Ohio State, I would tell him he can go ahead and pick up one of those hats off the floor, because he wouldn't be a Buckeye.

Of course, if a scUM hat was one that was thrown on the ground, and an OSU hat was the one that he ended up wearing, we'd love him. :roll1:
I actually considered this aspect. I think it could be done in a tasteful way, so long as the recruit didn't lead scUM on the entire time. Same thing for a scUM recruit to OSU. Avants comments about Mangold/OSU don't bother me, I take them as good natured ribbings
It doesn't bother me as much when kids do it to rivaling schools though, compared to just randoms.

how do you know this recruit "lead" Maryland along the whole way? Maybe he really intended to go there, but changed his mind before signing day.

College coaches lie all the time and say, "I'm not going anywhere" before taking another job. I guess high school kids can't do the same...

Well if he changed his mind thats tolerable but why drop the hat like that if thats the case.
Also, I have no more respect for coaches that quit right after LOI, i.e. scUM. It is probably worse, but they don't go on t.v. and make a mockery of the fact that they tricked someone though.

Actually, if we had a recruit pull that shit I'd have serious second thoughts about having him on the team...

First, I appreciate the class you showed when you were being recruited...too bad all recruits don't appreciate the attention and the efforts of others to get their services. In response to the quoted portion of your post, I think it's the media in general, along with "certain portions" of our current culture, which nutures and applauds self-centered showboating. Kids don't care as much about helping their team as much as they care about making SportsCenter highlights. Showing up your opponent, or in this case those who you don't feel are worth your talent, is actually looked up to.

Absolutely not. You can't justify this at all, it was a dick move. Thats not much different than saying "Well if Troy Smith stomped on Prescott Burgess's leg, we'd love him" when talking about Marcus Vick. A lack of class is a lack of class.

Excellent example. Well said.

also...nobody was up in arms when RJ Reynolds Choked Jim Sorgi.

But if you want to hear a real class act kid, it has to be CJ Spiller.

I watched his PC and they interviewed him afterward...and he was talking about why he committed and the thing he talked about most, was if the starting RB(ACC Frosh of the year) got hurt, he could fill his role...he was real cool about not having to be the main, guy, he was hardly on the team and he was talking about backing up the guy if he got hurt.

you're right, he must have made a mistake when he told the Maryland coach that morning to save him a scholarship... and then pulled the stunts at the presser (it was far more than just the hat swapping too). From what I've read on the PSU boards, he wasn't on the fence at the end of his recruitment.

actually plenty were very upset about that... such that you see it come up in conversation still today (and is primarily met with disappointment).

Well said. Respect for others. It is something these kids just don't understand.

I am guessing your parents gave you pretty good pointers in how to respect others. Respect starts in the family. Beanie Wells family is telling him to be nice on the way up, because those people will have to be nice to you on the way down. Family is another influence.
