The Cincinnati Reds avoided arbitration with All-Star shortstop Felipe Lopez yesterday and also received a positive medical news from 2005 opening-day starter Paul Wilson.
Lopez, who was scheduled for an arbitration hearing on Wednesday, agreed to a contract worth $2.7 million this season. He initially asked for $3 million and the team offered $2.15 million.
The Reds continue to negotiate with first baseman Adam Dunn, who is the final arbitration-eligible player on the team. Dunn is asking for $8.95 million and the team is offering $7.1 million. His hearing is scheduled for Feb. 17 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Wilson met reporters in Great American Ball Park and offered an update on his recovery from June surgery to repair the torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. He has been working out at the team’s spring training complex in Sarasota for the past two weeks.
"I’ve thrown off the mound eight times," Wilson said. "Right now I’m at about 50 percent. I’ve thrown 60 pitches the last three times and I’m getting stronger. We’re just trying to up the intensity."
Wilson has been through the rehabilitation process before. He had shoulder surgery in 1997 and Tommy John elbow surgery in 1999.
