of course Rivera is better than Cordero. Yet the point is making Rivera a 1 inning guy that pitches only for saves vs. making him a 3 inning guy like days of old is not a benefit. The whole 1 inning guy closer has lead to guys like Cordero being overpaid and does not help the team win any more than using a bullpen by committee or using your best reliever in situations other than a 9th inning save. In other words, it overvalues something that is no benefit to a team vs. the way bullpens used to be used.

absolutely agree

Its funny I heard Mitch Williams make the statement the other night that closer by committee never works/everyone needs a role. I knew right then and there the best practice is to go back to a bullpen by committee.

I think Mr. Williams was jealous of his compatriots in the Nasty Boys. Given the off day today, I'm surprised Sir Arthur didn't get some work on Sat/Sun.

I dont know if this has been mentioned yet but the Reds signed everyone of their picks from rounds 1-15..thats pretty sweet. I bet they are one of the few teams in baseball that can say that.

Yeah pretty cool. Downside to signing Grandal is that he gets put on the 40 man which makes it tougher for us to get some guys on the roster for the playoffs(DL, etc.) but he's a very talented player at a position that we seem pretty deep at, which is amazing.

Micah Owings DFA'd.

#Reds designate Micah Owings for assignment to make room for Yasmani Grandal.

I don't really mind losing him - with the emergence of guys like Ondrusek & Smith and the impending arrivals of Chapman & Burton, there really wasn't a spot for him. The only problem I see with his release is that he's a cheap option for the Cards to take a flyer on in place of one of their current gas can men.

Oh yeah, I know Owings time was through after the demotion. There's nothing more useless than a pitcher you can't even trust to pitch once every 16 days when you're being blown out, but it still stings that this means the Reds gave away Adam Dunn for nothing.

There's a thread on RZ saying Leake has been told he's being moved to the bullpen.

Obviously something was going to happen to limit his innings. I would have preferred that he be sent down to stall his service time and arb eligibility, but that would have also made him unavailable for the postseason (*knock on wood). Let's hope he's kind enough to repay the Reds in the future for making a move that will cost them some money down the road.

On the other hand, having him in the bullpen is not necessarily a bad thing. I think he can contribute there, and I also think he should be used as a pinch hitter. I know some people balk at the idea, but all this year he's been getting on base at a better clip than some of the "professional hitters" on the bench. In truth he's probably not actually better, but I say get as much out of him at the plate as you can before he turns into a pumpkin with the bat.
