I need to replace my current one which is FUBAR. I was going to have it done at a repair shop but a couple buddies of mine have told me it's very simple to do. Is that true? Unfortunately my friends that are cabable of doing it, supposedly, all live out of state. Just wondering if anyone could help me out before I rip this sucker open.

Thanks.

um teddy... he's not getting dell's help, so that story doesn't apply.

Are you replacing a laptop or desktop drive?

If it is a desktop drive and you're using xp, it really isn't very complicated.

seems teddy has edited his post since mine.

It's a tower. Just a little Dimension 2350. The drive is only like $50 on Dell's website and it plays DVD's, which the broken one doesn't. I may look around for a better price.

Thanks for the help, fellas. I appreciate it.

you can do better than that. dvd burners can be found for $35 or less... so you can get a cd burner for less.

newegg, pricewatch , etc should get you started.

Yea heres a word of advice. If you ever look in the guide or whatever comes with the product you buy, they're going to tell you to only buy (in this case) Dell Model (Fill in product #). When in reality you can buy just about any generic product and it will work. This probably doesn't apply in your case, but I'm just mentioning this advice.

With that being said, yea you can get a drive cheap just about anywhere...and it doesn't have to be a Dell product.

Little drummer boy, I was able to install a DVD writer without incident in my desktop. It's as easy as pulling out the old, and plugging in the new. The only thing that might trip you up is slave drives and the pins that make something the slave, but the instructions that came with the DVD I bought spelled it out real easy like. I say do it yourself.

BTW I don't know if I can call you anything other than nutty even with the change.... I can't call you Audio... slave has the wrong tone to it... Little drummer boy probably won't stick once the holidays are over... :p

how about Naudioslatty or something

AS... like Jdub said... it's relatively easy to do and shouldn't be a problem to do yourself.
