Retiring Numbers (Merged)

i understand where your coming from however i think your statement held true until cooper let Kat where 45. Cooper should of not let that happen.. but when you think about it what coach would tell their biggest recruit no to a number that wasnt retired. If chris wells wanted to wear 45 and it wasnt retired tressel wouldnt say no.

Thats where winning a Heisman should give a player the recognition of never having another buckeye wear your number, not to mention having your name hung next to that number never to be wore again in the shoe.

A couple things wrong with what you just said.

The number was not retired when Big Kat wore it, and he asked Archie permission to wear it. Even though it wasn't retired.

Plus if Wells wanted to wear it, and he asked Archie, I'm sure Archie would let him wear it.

Not to mention that if he puts up another 300-400 yard game against scUM...and does all that other stuff...then he'd be right up there with Archie as far as Buckeye heros.

Personally I like the "carrying on the tradition" to be able to wear a certain number at your position angle also. The #1 receiver jersey at scUM and the #44 at Syracuse come to mind...we could have the same thing with #45, or 36, or several others...but retiring college numbers outright just doesn't make sense to me, Heisman or not. I really think the Ring of Honor is the best idea.

And to address a couple of other posts: The guy from U. of Chicago was doubtless Jay Berwanger, and no offense to whoever posted it, but saying that anyone is 5x the linebacker Spielman was is laughable. Hawk is a great player, no doubt, but not 5x, or even 2x what Spielman was.

Just my 2 cents...

I remember reading about how ahrd it was for the AD to select a way of honoring previous standout football players here at OSU. They had gone through just about every possible scenerio: awards garnered, AA selections, recrod breakers, championship winners, etc. So they finally realized that the only fair and least complex way of doing it would be Heisman winners.

IMO, it is the only fair way, and one of the most beautiful things about Ohio Stadium is that its not cluttered with all kinds of player postings. Its simple and sweet. And with the Heisman award being the most diffuclt to get on a yearly basis, I would say we wont go past having up to 10 Heismans (total) for the next 10 years, realistically. But the downfall to this is that if a player like Teddy Ginn were to win a Heisman, how do you retire a solid reciever number like number 7 (or even number 4) that has been worn by past greats (ie. Carter, Jenkins, Glenn, hoying)?

2 legit sides to this argument, but I think overall what we are doing currently is fine and well excepted by this great city of Columbus, and of all Buckeye supporters.

Kids grow up dreaming of wearing the #7 jersey and so on.

I have an idea and it might sound stupid, but here it is:

When Jerry Rice went to the Seahawks, didnt he have to call someone and ask him if he could wear his retired number? If true, then why not have the same thing here? I dont know if thats possible or makes sense or anything, but its just an idea.

Yeah, it does make sense because Katz had to ask Archie and the University if he could don number 45. Ultimately it was Archies decision as he is the top face of OSU football (along side the great Woody Hayes that is). But the biggest arugment as you mentioned is how do you retire common number like "7"? I dont think its the only reason a kid would play for a certain school, but number choice does play into it.

Wonderfully simple and easily done. Of course, the criterion for getting on that sign would also be points of controversy but anything honoring people usually are...there has to be a cutoff point and some people easily rise above it but many hover around that bubble line.

Really it wasn't Archie's "decision" at that "time" 45 was not retired yet. BigKat did it more out of sheer respect for Archie.

If Archie said no, there was nothing that could have stopped Big Kat from wearing that number. Except for one of the coaches. I know its hard to say that Archie had no "say" in the matter, but he really didn't.

But since his number is retired now, only he can give permission for the use of that number.

With all of this talk about retiring numbers, I got to thinking. What if Maurice won the Heisman his freshman season. And then pulled the same crap he has since.

Would the university be getting ready to retire #13 in 2008(five years after he left). Even after everything he did?

It kinda brings up the question does it?

It takes more than simply winning the Heisman to get this honor. All of those numbers hanging around the Shoe represent not only great performers on the field, but men who became "ambassadors" for the university. Something MoC most definately is not.

From what I've heard, the thing a player needs to have his # retired is a Heisman Trophy.
