first off...WVU spread is centered around a RUNNING QB...that is the key to making it go...when white got hurt or they had to pass..it was tough...now...maybe he modifies it for the mallet but it was predicated on white's running ability....as for the 3-3-5....looks like FRESHMAN leshaun mccoy ran pretty well against it huh?

The WVU offense under White is based on his running ability...but that is not RR's only version of the offense. We've already discussed King and Dantzler at other schools...both were legit passing threats.

yes..RR does modify it a bit..would be anxious to see how he would for a 6'7 qb.....maybe he will let him sit back there and chuck it 50 times a game..but who is going to catch it? rumor has it aairington and manningham look to be on their way out....that leaves matthews....savoy.....then who?

I don't know exactly the type of offense Mallett ran, but you generally don't line up in the shotgun with two RBs and two TE's either. I assume it would be some variation of the spread, because, yes, it was every down. That's why he had so many snap-fumbles from under center. He'd basically never done that. I suppose he was described as pro-style because they lump all QB's into "running" and "pro-style" QB's, and it is not hard to rule Mallett out of one of those categories.

Since we don't have a serious thread about Ryan, I figured I would ask this here since it was brought up: do you have any idea why his highschool offense was run strictly out of the shotgun? Is he kind of awkward in his drops?

As for Rice, WVU beat Rutgers 31-3 this year, so the defense must have been doing something right, whether or not Rice got his yardage. And, as has been mentioned, 3-3-5 doesn't mean 3-3-5 all the time. I see that as something RR is willing to bring to the table, not a square peg waiting to be put into a round hole. He didn't win 60 games at WVU by being a stubborn ass about his defense.
I agree. Everyone was saying Urban Meyer's offense wouldn't work in the SEC. We proved em, didn't we... The important part of RR's statement is that he is 'likely' to bring a 3-3-5 with him. Doesn't mean it will be. This gives me the impression that he will do whatever it takes to succeed. He is adaptable. Give this man a chance before you dismiss his defense.

Can't believe I'm arguing for a wolverine.

No idea. I never noticed anything awkward about Mallett's drops other than the fact that he's generally kind of awkward whenever he moves anywhere. Best guess: Many, many high school offenses are in some way gimmicky - some never punt ever, for example - and his just happens to be one of them.

Re: WV 33 Stack

I have the Defensive Playbook if anyone is interested. WVU was more tendency based in their 33 than what you saw against Akron...you could count on a 4 man front usually.

I disagree. RR has not been a really top notch recruiter. He has got his 'system' guys to fit his offense, but has never had a player drafted while at WVU. NOT ONE, that will not fly in the Big Ten. You have to have "next level' players AT LEAST on defense if not both sides of the ball.

And Tressel was a Div I-AA coach and how he could recruit at Ohio State? RR will be able to recruit at Michigan a heck of alot better than West Virginia. The school will sell itself, really, who would WANT to go to West Virginia?

Say what??? Dee McCann, Pacman Jones, Chris Henry, Rasheed Marshall. To name a couple. Oh, and I bet some guys named White and Slaton make it somehow to the NFL.

If I recall all those guys were high risk guys. That is how Devine got to West Virginia. RR was willing to take the risks with character guys to get talent.

Dang Grad, that is why I was going to say. RR has started non-running QBs before in his offense. It is like Tressel in that sense, you have a basic system and tweak the play calling to match your personel. I can't remember the guy at QB at WV when RR got there but he was not a running QB, so it was a much more passing oriented attack.

Back to the recruiting part a little bit. Now with a higher profile type job RR should be able to get his pick of dual threat QBs. While Pryor going to West Virginia was an option no one really thought he would do it. But adding the tradition of Michigan along with it will open alot more door for RR to get his type of QB in much faster. Hopefully it is too late in the game for Pryor to go to Michigan, but imagine next year's Pryor (whoever that player is) being top priority for RR and now he has a much better chance to land him.
