Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

On the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry:

?Already, Michigan-Michigan State is one of the great rivalries in the country. People point to Michigan-Ohio State as being a great rivalry and it is. But the reason it is, I think, is because nationally it has taken on overtones. You have national championship games in the balance, Big Ten championships and Rose Bowls in the balance. The Michigan-Michigan State game is played earlier in the year but there is no more intense, no bigger rivalry in the state of Michigan than Michigan-Michigan State. Period. Football, basketball, baseball, field hockey, you name it. Because the two schools are in such close proximity and both alumni bases have such passion for their school and their sports that they want to beat the other guy worse than anything else.?

So according to the weasel announcer Michigan St is now Michigan's rival.

Or many UM fans during the 90s. If RR doesn't turn the rivalry around, I doubt you'll hear OSU fans claiming PSU or the SEC as our true rival.
As best I can tell you guys don't really have anyone besides us that you consider a rival anyway. (Unless you count that Illibuck thing.)

But there's nobody in Ohio you're gonna play every year and have to worry about hearing about it all year if you lose. Michigan/Ohio State is Michigan/Ohio State, but few people in Ohio live or work with a Michigan fan, and vice versa - whereas U-M and MSU fans have to put up with each other every day. I'm not sayin' they ever will or ever did replace OSU....but they did beat us more than you did during the Cooper years.

Penn State is certainly a heated rival, we simply do not allow anyone but UM to slip into such hallowed verbage. Even when PSU was horrendous, the rivalry still raged on... and the hatred is quite heavy between fanbases. There may not be as much PSU/OSU presence in the other's state (like your situation), but the atmosphere is more challenging and vitriolic imo than Sparty is for UM.

Even if Cinci went on to beat OSU twice this decade (let's assume UM stays at 1 for this hypo), and they were lined up as a regular opponent, there would be no chance of acknowledging them as more of a rival. The "little brother" angle already exists without any notable victories.

I understand why MSU is more of a noticeable rival at this point, but I can't imagine any team ever approaching Michigan's rivalry status wrt OSU, let alone surpassing it.

Me neither.....as far as I'm concerned it's part of the holy trinity of big college rivalries, only with much more at stake every year, and a longer and more colorful history than the other two.

Besides, it's fun beating Sparty, and then reminding them not only are they the Little Brother of the state, but they're not even the biggest fish we have to fry  .....riles 'em right up.
