  • Ross retires after 3-9 season at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Bobby Ross retired Monday as Army's football coach, and without a victory over Navy in his three seasons with the Black Knights.

The former NFL coach, who had a 9-25 record at Army, will be succeeded by offensive line coach Stan Brock.

"I think there's a point in time when you feel like it's your time to retire, and I think I've reached that time," the 70-year-old Ross said in a statement. "I think there is an issue of having a certain degree of energy, which I feel is very important for anyone leading a college football program. I feel that I was lacking in that area."

Is Bobby Ross the last coach to get the Lions into the post-season?? Anyway, Army had nowhere to go but up when Ross took over and he did raise the level a bit there.

Yes, he is. I like Ross. I think he's genuinely good people, and I hope he enjoys his retirement. Looking back, I think Ross actually did the best he could for the Lions, and I don't think he got a fair shake from the media while he was there. I wish he could have done better at Army - I'm squarely on the Navy side of that rivalry, but I always like to see the service academies do well.

He raised the talent level and the play after taking over after the disaster that was Todd Berry. I hope Army moves back to option attack under Stan Brock. That seems to be the best approach for a competitive Academy team.

    Just a little background story.

I remember sitting on a plane very early in '91 traveling back from Atlanta to points north. Sitting next to me was a large young fellow who was a little nervous - it being only his second flight. Overcoming his nerves somewhat was the good news he had to share that day, following his visit to Georgia Tech, where HC Ross had confirmed an offer to play on the O-line at Georgia Tech, and the young kid had accepted on the spot.

Biggest factor in the decision making of that young man? Not the national championship Tech had just won a share of. It was the impression that Ross had made on him that sealed the deal, wanting to earn an engineering degree fit like a glove for him as well. That education was something Ross talked up a lot with him.

Ironically, it was but one year later that Ross moved on from Tech, leaving that team in the hands of Bill Lewis, who accumulated a record of 11-22 in the next 3 years. So that kid only had one year under the tutelage of the man who was instrumental in his choice of college at which to play ball and get his degree.
