Rugby (6N, Rugby Championship, IRB 7s, etc.)

The Welsh are still being jobbed. I just saw the new world rankings and they’ve only been moved up to 3 and still sit behind Ireland. Of course, the 3/16 match will decide that issue, but having just run away from the English team that hided Ireland, I think they should already be at 2.

I saw that too. I also learned that there is a possibility--since the first tiebreaker is not head-to-head results--that Wales can literally complete the Grand Slam, but if England wins out and gets bonus points in each game (while Wales gets none), England could still win the god damned tourney through the tie breaking rules. Right now though, they just need to get ready to head to Murrayfield.

3/16 should be a hoot. It'll be St. Patty's weekend in Chicago (Downtown, river dying parade on Saturday; South Side parade on Sunday).

The resurgence of northern hemisphere rugby is due to the wholesale buyout of southern hemisphere coaches and players. It has nearly bankrupted several national rugby bodies, including England. Worldwide, there's nobody in the stadiums watching. TV ratings are not exactly stellar. I suspect that there will be major changes ahead in the 5-10 medium range horizon.

Yes, I'm pleased with the growth of 7s worldwide and the performance of the US side over the last year and a half or so. It's good to see their work paying off.

The Blitzbokke confuse me. They were the best overall side and the best offensive side that actually played defense relatively recently, but have fallen off a cliff. I like or at least I though I liked them getting younger players real minutes and maybe it's too early to judge, but it's ugly right now. I didn't know about the 15s/7s requirement. That really is nonsense. Not only must it wear them out, they're really two different sports and require different conditioning and performance. It's tough to do both and perform at a really high level in either.

Wales did what needed to be done. They should have been up by another 10 at halftime but just couldn't finish. They could have used the cushion the way Scotland got up off the canvas for the second half. Still, they do move on to the next round robin. I didn't watch it, but England rolled Italy as expected and picked up another bonus point.

Looking forward to Ireland/Wales. England looked better than I expected, even against Italy. The all-islander center pairing was ridiculous. I love that there's good attacking rugby being played in the North. Even Scotland can be dangerous, especially when they get Hogg back; he'd start for any of the other big three.

@RugbyBuck, we saw this coming for the USA five years ago. Everyone else bloody missed it. I am so pleased. The Blitzbokke are done. SA Rugby forced those guys to play Rugby Union and 7s. They have nothing left. Shameful.

Blitzbokke looking good in Vancouver, Steve. I love the young kid Pretorious. He runs almost like that other Pretorious and absolutely owned US speedster/defensive liability Carlin Isles for a try.
