Ohio State?s Coleman ready to shine at NFL Combine
By Carlos ?Big C? Holmes, Staff Writer
Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Englewood native and Ohio State defensive back Kurt Coleman is prepared to chase his dream of playing professional football.

Toward that end, the Northmont High School graduate will travel to Indianapolis on Saturday, Feb. 27, to take part in the NFL Scouting Combine, the annual invitation-only job fair for prospects entering April?s draft.

Coleman and more than 300 other potential picks will be put through medical examinations and a series of agility tests before all 32 NFL teams. Coleman returned to OSU after the Senior Bowl to train and prepare for his job interview.

?I?m ready to seize the moment,? Coleman said in a phone interview on Tuesday. ?I want to show teams what kind of leader I am and that I?m a very smart player. More importantly, I want to show teams that I can play with the best of them.?

Coleman Looking to Turn Heads at Combine
By Brandon Castel

When Kurt Coleman strolls the halls at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center people stop and take notice.

As Ohio State?s team MVP and a first-team all-Big Ten performer in 2009, Coleman was the heart and soul of one the best defenses in all of college football. While he may not be large in stature, his personality and competitive nature loomed large over the Buckeyes Rose Bowl-winning season.

And yet as he heads to Indianapolis this week as one of four Buckeyes invited to the 2010 NFL Combine, Coleman goes as just another face in the crowd; another player competing for a job.

?I think I can go to the next level and play right away and make a big contribution to the team,? the Clayton Northmont product said.

?I think teams will understand that when they see me out there for the combine. They?ll see the competitiveness and nature with which I go about my business.?

At 5-foot-11 and less than 200 pounds, Coleman certainly won?t turn many heads at Lucas Oil Stadium with his size. Not with someone like Terrence Cody (6-5, 370) walking around, but the OSU safety is hoping to leave an impression with his workouts.

?I?m not going to be able to grow, that?s for sure,? Coleman said with a smile.

?I hope I?ve proved that I can cover, and going to the NFL combine and just showing them my true speed in the 40. I think that will really signify that I can play corner and safety.?

Did I hear right that Coleman sat out the 40 today?

Correct!
Kurt wants to prove he has corner speed, hybrid potential, contribute as either a safety or corner in coverage.

Dispatch

Still nursing a minor injury and knowing the importance of posting a fast time, Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman chose not to run the 40-yard dash yesterday at the NFL combine.
Coleman suffered an abdominal strain weeks ago while training, and it lingered to the point that he decided to wait until OSU's pro day March12 to run. . .

Of all the Ohio State players heading into the NFL draft, safety Kurt Coleman probably has the most to gain or lose at the school's pro day next Friday.

Coleman was already facing numerous questions about his size when he chose not to run the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine this week because of an abdominal strain he suffered weeks ago. He did most of the position drills - drills where he didn't risk posting a time that could come back to haunt him - but now he finds himself in the position of having to impress the scouts at pro day or risk falling to the late rounds of the draft.

Some NFL officials are already talking about Coleman as a special teams player. If he doesn't show cornerback speed, he risks being seen as little more than a spare part. At 5 feet 10 and 192 pounds, the former captain is seen as too small to play safety in the NFL. In Coleman's mind, corner speed is under 4.5 seconds.

are people fucking stupid? seriously

Ed Reed 5-11 200
Troy Polamalu 5-10 207
Brian Dawkins 6-0 210
Michael Griffin 6-0 202
Bob Sanders 5-8 206

I am not saying that Coleman is comparable to any of these players, but they are all similar in size (and there are probably a lot more safeties at that size too).

the "too small to be a safety in the NFL" is just something that the media reports because they are too lazy to actually find the real story, NFL scouts don't actually believe that.... right? right??

Ohio State?s Coleman clicks with Browns
By Sean McClelland, Staff Writer
Friday, March 5, 2010

He had been briefed by former Ohio State teammates about what to expect, but the NFL Scouting Combine still must be experienced to be believed.

?More than anything, it?s just draining,? safety Kurt Coleman (Northmont) said this week after emerging from the four-day process in Indianapolis with a better idea of how he is perceived by teams.

?You really have to stay alert and on top of your game. There were meetings with coaches at 10 p.m., and you still had to be sharp.?

Coleman thinks he clicked with several teams, including the Cleveland Browns, who need help in the secondary. Others showing more than casual interest have been the Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs, he said.

?I talked to the Browns? secondary coach and we were vibing right away,? Coleman said. ?My agent said they liked me a lot. I think the coaches saw I was intelligent and a leader.?

The league leaves few stones unturned ? and no body part unexamined, as Coleman discovered after submitting to three MRIs to check on the status of old injuries. That process took about three hours, he said.

An abdominal strain kept Coleman from running, but teams learned he could bench press 225 pounds 19 times (same as more-heralded Tennessee safety Eric Berry), that his hand measures
9 1/8 inches and his arms are
30 3/4 inches long.

Coleman is being projected to go anywhere from the third round to the fifth. A good 40 time at OSU?s pro day March 12 could make the difference. One scouting report: ?He should be a contributor on special teams as a rookie, but may take some time to get on the field defensively.?

Coleman felt some pressure because a strained groin muscle prevented him from running the 40 at the combine. His reported times ranged from 4.48 to 4.55, which could help him realize his goal of convincing NFL teams he's fast enough to play cornerback.

"I want to be a safety, but I want them to know I can be flexible to play both positions," he said. "But I'm definitely a safety at heart."

The other player I was interested to hear from was DB Kurt Coleman. A strained muscle prevented him from running at the NFL Combine early last week, so this was a big day for a guy hoping to run fast enough to be considered a swing safety/cornerback type.

Coleman said he ran between 4.48 and 4.51. I also heard 4.55. Even that slowest time would be solid, considering Malcolm Jenkins ran in the mid-4.5s at the combine last year and did pretty well last season as a rookie CB with the Saints.

Defensive back Kurt Coleman was ecstatic with his performance on Friday, saying he helped his draft stock by running 4.48 and 4.51 in the 40 and also performing well in agility drills. "I'm fast enough to play corner and safety, and I'm fluid enough to play both positions," he said.

Ohio State pro day notes: Whalen leaves disappointed - The News-Herald Sports : Breaking news coverage for Northern Ohio

Kurt Coleman came into the day wanting to show he was fast enough to play both corner and safety, so he was pleased with his 4.48 time in the forty. And amazingly, he wasn't totally healthy coming into the day?until a miracle happened.

?Today, God came down and said ?You?re going to be healed today?, so I felt good,? Coleman joked. ?This is the best I?ve felt in three or four months.?

Coleman said that he definitely wants to be a safety, but wants to show his versatility. Right now, some teams are talking to him about initially being a nickel back who can do multiple things, which he thinks suits him well. He has a workout with New England set up soon.

Coleman happy, too: Safety Kurt Coleman felt the pressure to run good times because he couldn't run at the NFL Scouting Combine because of an abdominal strain. He said his times were in the range of 4.48 and 4.51. Coleman is projected to be drafted as a safety in the fifth round.

Kurt Coleman could be a sleeper come draft day as his stock continues to rise.
AP FILE

PITTSBURGH - The Steelers more than likely, unless they pull yet another trade or sign a free-agent will be searching for a cornerback come draft day.

Here's a potential sleeper no one is talking about, but a player from a big time school in Ohio State who could help the Steelers. Although he has played strong safety, he is expected to switch to cornerback and many have him going in the fourth or fifth rounds because of that.

His name? Kurt Coleman.
