S/LB Tyler Moeller (official thread)

You're right, Moeller is undersized, but its not off to think of him as a Linebacker. He's in the star because thats what he is - an undersized LB, but a step off from safety and corner.

Again, he didn't have the go on a regular game but he looked great in the Spring Games and spring practice (similar to KG).

What does all this mean for Moeller's class status if he is done for the season?

He'd have already qualified for a sixth year, but this just solidifes it even more. The NCAA grants medical redshirts on specific criteria, but also make judgement calls. He'll without question be granted the sixth year now...

And Tyler was banking on it already. Just unfortunate he was playing so well, and now needs to rehab after missing all of last year.

Seen him miss on two tackles yesterday and I immediately said "WTF?" out loud. He doesnt miss tackles and I was thinking something was wrong with him. I was not nearly worried it was this bad though. Absolutely sucks. Lets still hope and pray for the best outcome though.

I remember distinctly when he got hurt, and he immediately left the game. The missed tackles happened before he left the game.

Not that it means much, everyone was missing tackles early on yesterday. Part of that was LeShore being a huge and elusive back, part of it was the fact that this was our first road game of the year...no crowd to help you come out energized from the very beginning.

Moeller surgery confirmed, out for year

As expected, safety Tyler Moeller will have to undergo surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle and will miss the rest of this season, two team sources said today.

Moeller suffered the injury on Saturday at Illinois and had an MRI on Sunday, but the results weren?t known until today. Moeller will have surgery sometime this week.

As a fifth-year senior, Moeller?s collegiate career will be over unless the NCAA grants him a sixth year of eligibility. He had previously said he would appeal for a sixth year, based on the fact he missed all of 2009 with a serious head injury.

This is genius. Do you have any idea how hard it would be to lob a ball into the arms of a receiver over top of five of these things?!

Tressel said he expects Moeller and the team to petition for a sixth year of eligibility under the medical hardship waiver rule of the NCAA, though such a waiver is never a slam dunk certainty. But Moeller, a fifth-year senior, had to sit out last season after suffering a head injury in an incident during a family vacation in which he was sucker punched and fell, striking his head on the floor of the restaurant/bar.

?If a person is deemed out for the year and he is done playing, he's having surgery and all that, you can begin that type of initial paperwork,? Tressel said of the sixth-year appeal. ?Now, will it happen fast? I don't know.
?Normally if a guy's in a rehab situation and there's more games left and, who knows, he might get back -- but in this particular case, it's well-documented he cannot play the rest of the year.

Moeller was playing with gusto this season before he zoomed into a pile of players on Saturday and emerged with his left arm hanging limp. As Tressel pointed out, it appears to be a more serious recurrence of a muscle tear Moeller had suffered in 2008, and evidently due to the down time associated with his head injury -- he could do little in terms of strength and conditioning ? it was still a vulnerable spot.

?But you just feel sick for him because you saw the pain he was in last year not being able to help his teammates and now he was, and now he was having fun,? Tressel said. ?So, yeah, it's very disappointing and obviously it hurts us.?

Buckeyes' Tyler Moeller unsurprised by season-ending injury: Ohio State Insider
Published: Wednesday, October 06, 2010
Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When Tyler Moeller tore his left pectoral muscle against Illinois on Saturday, he knew it immediately because the Ohio State defensive back estimates he'd torn it about a dozen times before. This one was a full tear, though, which is why he'll undergo surgery at 11 a.m. Wednesday that will end his 2010 football season.

Everyone knows Moeller missed last season because of an off-field head injury. What most did not know was that Moeller had been basically tackling one-handed since the 2008 season.

"I kind of thought this was something that would happen eventually," Moeller said. "I've been using my right arm to hit and get off blocks."

Moeller said he first suffered a partial tear in the summer of 2008, but didn't want to slow down while fighting for playing time, so he wore a strap on his chest and played with the injury that entire season. He sat out last season after he was assaulted in a restaurant last summer, but his chest still wasn't healed all the way this year.

Moeller said he even tweaked it while putting his pants on before the game and suffered many partial tears in the past while playing. But he said he needed to suffer a full tear to have surgery, which is where he is now.

"I'm keeping my head up," Moeller said. "I've been through worse. I want to bounce back next year and get better. Things happen and you have to look at the bright side and get through it."

If you truly want to get up to speed on TM, check out the video of his interview on the o-zone.net.

Of particular interest is that he admits the injury was likely inevitable at some point in his football career. I was not aware TM had limited use of one arm before the injury. The positive side is that he hopes the surgery will permit full recovery.

He also says the granting of a sixth year of eligibility is not a sure thing.

Again, don't take my word for it, listen to the interview.
