S Leroy Roker (Official Thread)

An interesting offer - but Iowa and Miami have a good history with safeties, so that is encouraging.

Long strider, not afraid to come up and mix it up, has very good hands, doesn't bite early/good patience, and the most encouraging trait is he takes great angles to the ball.
Has areas to improve - lacks great recovery speed (although better angles, less you need...), doesn't wrap up consistently.

Would love to hear what Coach Mick thought he could grow into body wise. I'd imagine he slots into the 'adjuster'/free safety role when he arrives.

I like this post on 11W forums...

More info on Leroy Roker, he played for a small private school before transferring into Bishop Verot this season which is a bigger football program in Fort Myers. They have multiple other D1 prospects.

Florida and USC had just started getting into contact with him. Good to get him locked up before more schools got involved.

he’s a basketball star who just started focusing on football and that basketball athleticism shows up on his tape. Kid has hops, speed and is a ballhawk. The one thing you worry about coming from basketball to focusing on football is physicality but as a deep safety, he has the tools you are looking for. 6-2 frame with speed, athleticism and always around the football. You can teach every thing else.

Nice pickup! More I read on Roker, the more I like this commitment. We obviously needed another safety and this kid had some good offers (Florida, Miami and Iowa) and likely had (or will have) more coming. Sounds like a later bloomer that just started getting into football and may take some time to develop, which works fine with the young safeties we've got in the pipeline like Styles, Hartford, Stokes, Bonsu, Hawkins and McClain.

Welcome aboard Leroy!

Did I read that right where someone said his game was similar to Malik Hookers?

Hes reminiscent of Malik Hooker, in that he’s been primarily a basketball player in HS(arguably the best in his region of FL). His ball skills and physicality pop off the tape! I think Eliano can turn him into a beast on the back end of the defense. I can See them closing this one down soon

You can tell he is super intelligent. He holds back, watches and baits the QB, then makes his move. Closing speed is elite.
