S Orhian Johnson (official thread)

He needs to stay healthy. We're much thinner at safety, now.

I actually thought Safety was a position that we were looking good at. Between Gant, C Bryant C "Pittsburgh" Brown and Jamie Wood they don't have much experience but just need reps. But then again Barnett didn't have much experience either but he looked fine the more he played.

Corey Brown plays CB. But I think with CJ done for the year, we could see a little more Bryant out there.

IMO, safety is one of the easier positions to move into as an underclassman and at least be fine. As long as a guy is athletic and has the attitude to be a good tackler (which it seems like OJ has plenty of) then he'll be fine. Just play conservative, don't let them get behind you and, in the words of AJ Hawk, "tackle the guy with the ball."

After starting one game for the Buckeyes last season when captain Kurt Coleman was suspended for a late hit, Johnson had done just about everything he needed to do to position himself as Coleman?s replacement on the back end of Ohio State?s defense.
The redshirt sophomore out of Florida spent all spring working alongside senior Jermale Hines on the first-team defense, and opened fall camp as a projected starter for the Buckeyes.

FWIW, I think you mean Aaron Gant. Christian Bryant is most likely the #2 Star, behind Tyler Moeller. With Barnett out, I think the depth chart will read 1) Johnson, 2) Gant, 3)??.....Bryant is certainly a contender at the position, but I think Gant currently has the edge as the #2 Free Safety.

Ohio State spotlight: Orhian Johnson

Back at the start of Ohio State's preseason camp, it was assumed that Orhian Johnson was penciled in as the the new starter at strong safety, even by Johnson.

"Anybody who thinks they're penciled in, that's a problem," Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said. "Just like playing golf with you. Whoever's got the pencil might be the winner."

It's clear now that Johnson didn't have the pencil. C.J. Barnett did. He turned it into an ink pen when he won the starting job over Johnson, whose effort also was hurt by a calf muscle pull at crunch time.

But now Barnett is likely out for the season after undergoing surgery earlier this week to repair the injury to his right knee, suffered in the third quarter of last Saturday's win over Miami. Johnson stepped into the lineup for him that day, and is expected to start against Ohio University and its spread offense today. But with Aaron Gant and Zach Domicone also in the wings, it's not like Johnson's name is there in ink yet.

"We're trying to stress that each and every week there's a lot of competition," Fickell said. "Yes, we had high hopes for Orhian and like we've always said, you've got to put it on film and show it, and that's during a game that most often you want to see."

It's best when it's a full DVD, too, he said, and not just snippets, like when he entered for Barnett last week.

"The situation of the game was not quite the same. The guy coming off the bench as the sixth man doesn't quite have the pressure that the guy going out there to start the game has," Fickell said. "We expect great things from him, and that's kind of where we were going into camp."

Asked whether there was a chance Tyler Moeller also could move into that spot next to starting free safety Jermale Hines, Fickell said "How ever we can get te best 11 out there, we'll find a way to do it."

I read that article as Fickell trying to get him motivated or that Johnson has all the tools to be great but has yet to put in the work consistantly to be counted on as a starter. From players and coaches sounds like he has the physical tools, lets hope his work ethic and mental game develops quick as well.
