S Zach Domicone (Official Thread)

Great news for Zach! I wasn't sure where he would fit in with our depth at S, was hoping he wouldn't get swallowed up with all the big names and guys with more stars coming from HS. Zach looks like he can lay the wood, and make some good plays when called upon. I thought he might end up at Star

Domicone No. 2 free safety for Ohio State

Reports on the Ohio State spring football practice vary depending on who issues the report. But one player who got good reviews across the board was Beavercreek?s Zach Domicone. The 6-foot-3, 211-pound sophomore came out of spring as the Buckeyes? No. 2 free safety behind Jermale Hines, a senior from Cleveland Glenville.

Domicone?s deep coverage improved during the spring and he drew a lot of praise as one of the best tacklers in the secondary. He is expected to see a lot of time when OSU uses five or six defensive backs. He?ll also be used on special teams.

Sophomore Domicone makes history with Buckeyes
By Sean McClelland, Staff Writer
Saturday, November 6, 2010

Zach Domicone every so often does something to remind fans he?s still part of the Ohio State football team ? and that he might have a larger role soon.

In the Buckeyes? 56-10 trouncing of Minnesota last Saturday, the redshirt sophomore safety became the first Beavercreek High School graduate to score a touchdown for the Buckeyes when he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone in the third quarter.

OK, so there hasn?t exactly been a strong Beavercreek-to-Ohio State pipeline over the years. Domicone is the first Beaver to play for the Buckeyes in about 40 years. No surprise, however, that his place in history was not uppermost in his mind when he saw the ball bouncing around.

?It was really exciting,? Domicone said. ?My first thought was to be in position to dive on it and wrestle it away.?

Mission accomplished. Their first points of the second half extended the Buckeyes? lead to 38-10. In the fourth quarter, as the carnage grew more gruesome and reserves were summoned, Domicone played from scrimmage for the first time in college, making two tackles on Minnesota?s final possession.

?Just to be able to be out there and show what I could do was a great feeling,? said Domicone, who backs up Jermale Hines.

And quite a different feeling from the previous week when Domicone, out with a hamstring injury, had not accompanied the team to Wisconsin. He watched that devastating defeat in his apartment with his brother, Nick, an Ohio State student.

?You can ask my brother ? I was a foot from the screen the whole game,? Domicone said. ?I was in shock. Just a terrible feeling.?

A quarterback in high school, Domicone seemed ticketed for a Mid-American Conference school such as Ohio University until late in the recruiting process. It?s likely he would be starting now had he chosen that route, but with two years of eligibility remaining after this season, there?s still time to make an impact with the Buckeyes.

?I?m satisfied with where I am,? Domicone said. ?There?s a lot of time between this year and next year. I?m going to work hard, study the game and hope for the best.?

DOMICONE IS DOING WORK ? It seems every time junior safety Zach Domicone is on the field he?s making a big play.

The 6-foot-3, 211-pounder from Beavercreek, who has been running mostly with the second-team defense, has made the most of his opportunities this past week. Whether it?s coming up and making a big hit in run support or playing the pass, he?s doing everything at a very high level.

Earlier in the week, Domicone diagnosed a pass coming from Guiton, stepped in front of it and raced about 35 yards for a score. A couple days later, the opportunistic defender dislodged the football from tailback Carlos Hyde?s arms, resulting in a recovery by Christian Bryant, who took the ball the other way to paydirt.

Primarily a special teams player in 2010, Domicone could see a major increase in playing time in the Buckeyes secondary this season.

Ohio State defensive back Orhian Johnson (19), linebacker Etienne Sabino (6) and defensive back Zach Domicone (16) of Beavercreek are joined by Nick-on-a-Stick, Zach's absent younger brother Nick, an OSU freshman, at the Buckeyes' Media and Family Day on Sunday at Ohio Stadium.

COLUMBUS ? Once again, it was a Domicone popping up in an unexpected place.

The first time it had happened ? some 2? months ago in a Sports Illustrated expose that detailed NCAA violations and alleged transgressions involving Ohio State football ? it left a shaken Zach Domicone, the Buckeyes? personable junior defensive back from Beavercreek High School, doing everything he could to clear his name.

This time ? just last Sunday at OSU?s Media and Family Day at Ohio Stadium ? the surprise Domicone presence involved Zach?s younger brother Nick and left family members laughing and Buckeye players jockeying to be part of the joke.

As he stood on the field Sunday, Domicone noticed a homemade sign bobbing above the players? families as they settled into the end-zone stands to wait for the team photos to be taken.

?I was thinking, ?Who would bring a sign?? ? he said with a laugh. ?Then I saw it was my mom.?

A noteworthy portion of the article from the DDN in the previous post:

First came the facts: When Zach first came to Ohio State as a freshman, he had gone to one of the tattoo parlors in question because teammates said it was a place to hang out, said his dad, Fred: "And he did get a tattoo there, which he paid for, and after that he called me and said the place was kind of seedy and he wasn't going back."

To make his case, Zach gathered his receipts, took photos of all his OSU-issued memorabilia and then met with an NCAA investigator.

"The NCAA has kind of let us know he's been cleared, but they don't do it publicly," Fred said. "That's the tough part. They publicly pull you out on the carpet, but they don't announce afterward, 'We didn't find anything.' "

COLUMBUS ?

A gap that once was two inches and then expanded to almost three decades has been closed thanks to their sons ? both of whom are Ohio State Buckeye football players.

After graduating from Fairborn Park Hills High School in the late 1970s, both Fred Domicone and Rob Fada ? a pair of offensive linemen for the now defunct Vikings ? furthered their football careers in impressive fashion.

Fred played for the Dayton Flyers team that won a national title in 1980. Rob went on to Pitt, where he blocked for Dan Marino, and then was drafted by the Chicago Bears, where he played for two seasons before spending a year with the Kansas City Chiefs.

?Those first couple of summers after high school we?d get together with one of our old coaches, put on some pads and work out,? Fred said. ?But it got to a point where Rob was just too big for me to handle.

?He had a really long wingspan and I remember after one blocking drill when I just couldn?t keep my hands on him, he said, ?Wait a minute.? He put his arms on my shoulders and said to hit him in the chest. But I stretched out and I was still two inches away.?

In the years that followed the two men drifted further apart as they established themselves in the workforce and raised their families. But Sunday afternoon ? nearly 30 years after those summer-time workouts ? they were back together again in Ohio Stadium.

?It?s like karma all over again,? Rob said channeling a bit of Yogi Berra.

Fred called it ?a real neat happenstance.? His son, Zach ? a former prep star at Beavercreek High School ? is a fifth-year senior defensive back for the Buckeyes.

?I was going through the media guide not too long ago and I saw Rob had a son Craig who was an incoming freshman,? Fred said. ?I called Zach and he said, ?Yeah, he?s my baby brother.? I just couldn?t believe it.?

Ohio State players finish Pro Day
Thirteen players from Ohio State's undefeated 2012 season worked out for NFL scouts this morning at OSU's Pro Day, and some Buckeyes appeared to have helped themselves.

There are no "official" statistics kept as each team records its own times.

Safety/special-teamer Zach Domicone said he heard that he ran in the 4.5 range, which was his goal.

"I think I had a great day," Domicone said. "I wanted to come out and give it my best shot, and I think I did that."

The formal part of Ohio State?s pro day had ended yesterday, but several former Buckeyes players remained on the Woody Hayes Athletic Center field working on special-teams drills.
For players like Zach Domicone and Orhian Johnson, every chance to show their skills and desire must be seized. For every Johnathan Hankins who can afford to do only select drills and knows he will still be guaranteed a big payday soon, there are the Domicones and Johnsons who must scrap to make an impression.
Last year, walk-on special-teams ace Nate Ebner went from who?s he in NFL scouts? minds to a fifth-round draft pick of the New England Patriots. So Ebner has become a patron saint of sorts for overlooked Buckeyes.
A year ago, Ebner prepared DVDs of his highlights to hand to NFL scouts. Yesterday, Domicone did the same thing, giving them to representatives from the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers when they approached.
?Nate is definitely someone I look to for guidance,? said Domicone, a safety who primarily played special teams. ?We have a very similar situation, and he?s one of my best friends.?
Ebner was an unknown mainly because he played rugby in high school and walked on with the football team at Ohio State. Domicone is probably a mystery to NFL teams because his career was beset by a succession of injuries. He needed to post good numbers yesterday to open some eyes, and he thinks he did.
There are no official statistics for pro day; each team records its own. But Domicone was told he ran 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, which was his goal. He also was happy with how he did in other drills.
?I think I had a great day,? Domicone said. ?I wanted to come out and give it my best shot, and I think I did that.?
