Saturday Superstitions ... Game Day Prep

Always pick a jersey to wear for all the home games and one for all of the away games. Started doing this in 2006, the only time I've broken said superstition:

2007 BCS Championship: I bought a new jersey for this game..not sure how it fits since it was neither a home or away game. I've since taken to wearing the jersey that corresponds to whether we're in our home or away jerseys.

2007 Illinois: We played 2 home games in a row and I forgot to wash my home one (It was in the laundry basket all crumpled to hell), had to swap.

2009 Purdue: Had the swine flu, didn't really think getting puke all over an $80 jersey was a good idea.

Needless to say after 0-3 I will not break this at any cost, although I own like 8 or 9 Ohio State jerseys and only use 2 of them during a given season.

We are 1 week away! Let's talk Game Day Food! Everything is a superstition.

So...Since I usually have nothing more than snack type food during the games here is my usual menu during the season.

Ritz cracker with high quality braunschweiger, sharp cheddar, red onion, and a dash of spicy brown mustard.

Homemade wings..I don't trust anyone that brings me food during a game as it might upset the MOJO.

scUM week.

I used to make a whole surf and turf type of deal during the Cooper years..and then Burgers...and then just not eating. When JT came on board I changed it to a Brisket...I'm sticking with that for the time being.

HOLY SHIT! 7 DAYS! GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:oh:

I have purchased new shirts and hats and have yet to wear them until next Saturday. I'm hoping that I only have to wear one this season and only one. IF somehow the unthinkable happens then I have backups to replace the mojo.

I haven't decided what will be on the menu but I think I'm headed to HF's for a meal.

And a BUCKEYE fan would be welcome...I don't brag a lot but when I do it's usually about food. I kid you not my brisket will melt off your fork if you don't eat it fast enough....and my ex sister in law sends me the best NM green chili to top it off with. My baked beans drive my actual chef friends crazy. Seriously though, even my son..who hates onions and mustard, will sit with me, and help finish off my Blitzkrieg snack.

This song has always made me think about our defense..I think with UFM..our offense will finally be on the attack!

I have the same jersey I've worn for every game for 15 years now...Katz's 45. I also wear the same two shirts under it. First shirt is a black shirt from my high school. Second shirt is a red shirt I got in college. When it is cold, I wear my 20 year old red Buckeye hoodie over the two shirts, but under the jersey. Yes the undershirts and the hoodie have holes in them. Doesn't matter...that's what I have to do. The holes in the hoodie are at the end of the sleeves, which is nice because I can put my thumbs in them to keep my hands warm, because gloves are not an option. Glove are bad luck, and dull any clapping I may do. Coats are never an option. Haven't worn a coat to a game in my memory. One time I wore a "FUCK MICHIGAN" T-shirt for a Michigan game. That was in 2002. I wore it for the first half. When we were down 9-7 at half...I took it off. As we all know, Michigan didn't score another point the rest of the game, and we won (thanks to me) and therefore I will never wear anything else again.

I have placed the same status on my AIM, and now Facebook since it's existence, since I can remember. It simply says "Go Bucks!!! Beat (Other team)!!!" Always 3 exclamation points, and always using the opposing school's full name. I forgot once, when we played Penn State in 2008. I apologize for the loss! I won't forget again!

I always keep a lucky Buckeye in my right pocket. So does my dad, and my girlfriend, and my mom, and everyone else I can get to. And when we lose, I immediately find out who didn't have their Buckeye with them. And it's always somebody who forgot.

I always wear a black Block O hat. I was on the way to the game from Dayton once, about half way to Columbus. Then I realized I forgot the hat. Obviously we went back to get the hat.

I always get to the game before the band takes the field. When the band takes the field, always stand, and clap to the beat of every song. To do anything less may piss off the Buckeye Gods, and I don't want to do that before a game!

I started this one when I was younger, and don't know why, but I just kept doing it. I almost always am at the game with my dad, and when the band does Script Ohio, I turn to him in the middle of it, point out the I-dotter, as they are the only sousaphone player not with the rest of them, and ask my father if he thinks they are nervous. He always says no.

At half time my dad and I ALWAYS go and stand in the concourse area for a few minutes and recap the first half. It's a must. To not do this would be doom for the second half.

There are countless more small things. Most around me think I am crazy. Whether it is a superstition, or just traditions, it is what it is, and it's Buckeye football how I know and love it. And one week from now, it all starts again.

A fun superstition my friend has, is that he goes up to a random tailgate every game, and asks for a cookie. He must get a cookie from a random tailgate before he goes into the game. The man has gotten a lot of free cookies.

I pick different shirts for home and away games at the beginning of the season. I put it on on Friday morning and do not take it off until Saturday night. They do not get washed unless we lose, to get the loss off of it. Sometimes this can get really bad. I worse a jersey for the LSU game and will never wear one again.

I also put chili together in the crock pot the night before the game and eat it all day long and shave Friday night before the game.

For Michigan, I wake up Friday morning and don't go to sleep until Saturday night...it originally started because I was so excited I couldn't sleep, but now has turned into something else altogether. Last year I fell asleep on the Friday night before the SCUM game after working an insane 16 hour shift. It won't happen again.

Everything that I thought was a superstition has been broken at one point or another. I can't pretend that any of the shit I do works or puts me in a better frame of mind for the game.

The only common thread from one game to another is that when my wife starts constantly yelling stuff that would get her banned from a game thread here, she has to shut the fuck up and leave the room.

It's almost time!!!!!!! No screw ups guys. If someone knocks at your door..don't answer..phone rings..fuck em. Kid gets hurt..for the love of god take care of it. Is Chili cooking? Are the right clothes washed and ready? You got enough BEER? Is it COLD?!? Get to the concourse on time with your dad. It's Just over 12 hours away..Man I hope we score 85 points. Going with the autographed #36 to start things out, looking for a shut out. If need be will convert to #10 or #45 for offensive help. I have a Buckeye Football T from 2002 hiding underneath. Got some pork slow cooking in the crock. I've got a 30 of natty light, a 12 of fat tire, 2 bottles of Arrogant Bastard Ale, and a fifth of JD.....I'm ready! GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
