COLUMBUS, Ohio - Redshirt freshman Tony Kennedy homered in the fourth and singled in the seventh to bat in two runs as the Scarlet handed Gray a 3-2 defeat Thursday at Bill Davis Stadium to clinch the 2004 Scarlet and Gray World Series 2-1.
Trailing 1-0 and having seen his team retired in order the first time through the order, Kennedy (Fr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) sent a shot out of the park in straight-away center field to tie the game 1-1. Kelly Houser (Jr., New Holland, Ohio/Adena) followed with the Scarlet's second hit of the game, but Gray starter Dan Barker (Fr., Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) responded to retire the next three batters to get out of the inning.
Gray had taken the early lead in the top of the third with the aid of two hits. Nick Feucht (Fr., Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) led off the inning with a single through the left side before getting bunted over by Kyle Dyar (Fr., Newark, Ohio/Newark). A single by Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) got under the glove of a diving Jacob Howell (So., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) in left field enabling Feucht to reach third before scoring on a fielder's choice on a ball hit by Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy). After Gray went in order in the top of the fifth, Scarlet designated hitter Adam Schneider (So., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. Barker walked Jonathan Zizzo (Fr., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota, Fla.) with one out before Schneider beat the throw at third on a slow roller back to the pitcher by Chris Macke (Fr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North). Schneider broke the tie when he scored on a fielder's choice off Kennedy's bat. A walk to Houser loaded the bases, but the freshman pitcher responded with a strike out Howell, the 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
In the top of the sixth, Gray took benefit from a throwing error on an attempted pick-off trying to get Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) at first after he walked with one out, but the throw sailed wide of first baseman Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) and Bourquin made it all the way to third. Scarlet starter Cory Luebke (Fr., Maria Stein, Ohio/Marion Local) walked his second straight batter, Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg), who stole second prompting a throw from Houser, the Scarlet catcher, to Kennedy, the second baseman. Kennedy fired back to Houser, who nabbed Bourquin at the plate to prevent the equalizing run.

Angle grounded into a 6-3 double play before Zoeller grounded out to short to end the game.
No other Scarlet player had more than one hit, though it was Caughenbaugh who delivered the other run with his long ball in the sixth. Scarlet was out-hit by the Gray 9-7 and had two hits each from Angle, Fryer and Feucht.
Luebke got the win for Scarlet, allowing just one run on six hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked three before giving way to reliever Brett Hatcher (Sr., Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine), who picked up the save over the final three innings. Barker was tagged with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in his fifth and final inning. He yielded to DeLucia, who allowed Scarlet's third run.
The Scarlet, which now will eat streak, chicken and ribs on Monday, hit .262 in the series, compared to the Gray team, which will scavenge on hot dogs and baked beans, that hit .256. Gray had the top two hitters in the series as Fryer batted .556 (5-for-9) and Angle batted .500 (6-for-12) in the three games. The top Scarlet hitter was Kennedy, who hit .364 (4-for-11).
The series concludes fall practice for the Buckeyes, who wait until Feb. 25-27 to open the 2005 season at the Wiregrass Classic in Dothan, Ala. against Middle Tennessee, Troy and Iowa.
