Scholarships for 2006 season

According to our class breakdown by position, we have 24 ships to give (had 21 until Holmes, Youboty, and Whitner declared), and with 15 verbals we have 9 left (7 if we count Small and Browning).

MB...do you think we will take all 9. Granted if the player is on the board and he is a must get we take him but with only 14 grants to hand out next year, I would think JT holds a few for walkons and next years class.

This commitment caught me way off guard...what a great surprise.

OT from Andy but, do you think we use all 9 spots up? Or bank some for next year? There are a lot of guys left on our board that seem to be very likely candidate to fill the calss.

Derrell Johnson
Johnnie Troutman
Raymond Small
Bryant Browning
Aram Olson
Wesley Lyons (Maybe bring Darrin Walls along with him?)
Greg Mathews
Aaron Gant
Elijah "Scott" Fields
Ashton Henderson

Probnably more, but those were just off the top of my head.

Missing is the fact one of the place kickers next year will get a scholarship. That is another reduction of 1. I'm sure there are a couple more that get scholarships that are not on that list. I'd say 2 or 3 from last years team get a schollie (one kicker is a lock). That leaves 6 or 7 (or 4 or 5 with the Browning/Small prediction).

I know there have been recent posts about Darrin Walls decommiting, but I would be absolutely shocked if he did so... Anyways, big commitment for us. A great student and another OOS kid that Tressel cannot seem to recruit:)

As of this posting, we have 24 available scholarships with the early departures of Holmes, Youboty, and Whitner. With today's commitment of Andy Miller, we have 15 verbals, which leaves nine available. Many are asking, will we use them all, and should we? I'm not sure we'll use all nine for recruits. Keep in mind that Tressel like to hand on scholarships to a few senior walk-ons who have excelled throughout their career. A few have also brought up that at least one kicker, and possibly two, will also get scholarships. First, let's look at our Scholarship Breakdown by Position and Recruiting Class chart. You'll notice that coming into the 2005 season, we had 77 scholarship players (Seniors=13, Juniors=17, Sophomore=17, RS/Frosh=13, Frosh=17) on roster. Now, did Tressel give out eight scholarships to walk-ons? Not sure, but I don't think he did...my guess is about three or four. If that's his usual M.O., then we can count on a maximum of six scholarships (two kicker, four walk-on) being saved, which would leave 18 for recruits and thus three more left for this class. I'm guessing that the staff will focus on their most crucial remaining needs, whatever they may be, while saving at least a couple ships for seniors walk-ons. We'll probably take 19-20 recruits, while giving the remaining 4-5 ships to at least one kicker and then a few walk-ons.

I'm thinking we take 5 more.

Small
Browning
Troutman
Olson
Gibson

Maybe a 6th:

Derrell Johnson (maybe class of '07 due to Grayshirt. I don't know the rule).
Aaron Gant
Kylan Robinson (probably going to scUM South)
Colin McCarthy

The thing is, Tressel doesn't give scholarships to every senior walk-on, just the ones that stay five years. Antonio Smith, John Kerr, Drew Norman and Harrison Till are the senior walk-ons next year. Kerr can't receive a scholarship due to the Big Ten transfer rules, and Till just joined the team last year, so Smith and Norman will be the only two. Pettrey and Pretorius will both be on scholarship next year from all reports. So that leaves about five spots for this year.

By the way, the team was never above 80 scholarships for last season. Partly by design to even out recruiting classes, and partly due to departures from the program. Also, don't forget that injury casualties keep their 'ships, but don't count against the 85.

I just want to say something here. I don't know if Antonio will get a athletic scholarship. This will be his 5th/Senior year. But he went to OSU on a full academic scholie and still has it. Which makes it kinda stupid for Tressel to burn a athletic scholie on a player that has a academic "full-ride".

What I did not know was that Smith was a "walk-on". In our school(He went to Beechcroft) they have taped up in the trophy case a copy of his LOI to OSU. As is Sirjo Welch's.

From what I heard from my head coach is that Antonio was offered by OSU, but recieved a academic scholie. This could be so they didn't have to burn a athletic scholie on him and keep it for another player that may not be smart enough(I'm not saying "dumb") to get the academic scholie.

If you are on a scholarship--any kind of scholarship--and then play football, that scholarship becomes a football scholarship. The NCAA does that to keep universities from bypassing the 85-scholarship limit by handing out frivolous scholarships.
