I believe Lighty has a shot at breaking the record for wins in all of FBS college basketball. Memphis players would have the record, but their great '09 season was vacated due to the Derrick Rose SAT fraud so that season doesn't count. The current sanctions-free record is held by '98-'01 Duke, who had 133 wins over those four years. All Lighty would have to do is play in 24 more wins this season (the team will play 16 more regular season games, and up to 9 postseason games). He'd tie the record with 23 more wins. Don't y'all think OSU is going to win 39 games this year to give Lighty the record???

Assuming a first-round bye in the B10 Tourney, we would need finish the season undefeated to give Lighty the record, and have 1 loss (either regular season, Big 10 Tourney final, or NCAA Tourney final) for him to tie it.

The first win in the Football Bowl Subdivision of College Basketball will break the current record of zero wins in the Football Bowl Subdivision of college basketball.

Coach Thad Matta, David Lighty and Jon Diebler met with the media today to discuss Sunday's game against Minnesota and other issues:

-A victory would be the 111th of David Lighty's five-year career at Ohio State -- a total no other Buckeyes player has achieved.

"You stick around for 20 years, you?re going to win enough games," Lighty joked.

"It?s been great teams I?ve played on, great teammates, and just going out and getting the job done every game. My freshman year kind of gave me a head start. Hopefully this year we can continue like we did then."

Lighty, who has played in every game for which he's been healthy, won 35 games as a freshman. The two players with whom he shares the current record of 110, Danny Peters and Mark Titus, were freshmen managers in 2006-07 who became walk-on players because the team was short-handed.

"Evan (Turner) really wants me to break the record. Him and Mark had that thing going on," Lighty said, referring to Titus frequently targeting Turner with barbs on Titus' Club Trillion blog.

"Hopefully it?ll be a sellout crowd," Lighty said, "so we can get all his Club Trillion fans to come and watch me break the record. I?m sure they won?t be rooting for me, though. We?ll see what happens."

- Matta said that for Lighty to finish with more wins than any other Ohio State basketball player is appropriate.

"David Lighty may go down as maybe the most underrated player to ever play at Ohio State," Matta said. "The things he has brought to this program, all the intangibles he brings, he?s definitely one of my all-time favorites I?ve coached anywhere."

Diebler seconded that.

"The one thing about Dave is he makes everyone else around him better," he said. "Dave does things that don?t always show up in the stat book, but when you watch film, just the ground he covers on defense, you?re like, 'Man.' It didn?t show a rebound or a steal, but what he does to disrupt other players on the defensive end is unbelievable.

"He?s one of the better players we?ve had here. He may not average the most points or most rebounds or assists or steals, but he?s a guy we have to have on the court just because of all the intangibles he brings."

Bob Hunter commentary: After 111 victories, little surprises Lighty
Monday, January 10, 2011
By Bob Hunter
The Columbus Dispatch

The man who has seen everything in Ohio State basketball was sitting between two men who have seen next to nothing.

David Lighty didn't seem even a little surprised by what had just happened, astounding as it seemed to the rest of us: The Buckeyes rendered a strong Minnesota team harmless with tenacious defense in building a 57-39 lead with 81/2 minutes left, then needed William Buford to block Austin Hollins' three-point try at the end to preserve a 67-64 Ohio State victory yesterday.

But this was victory No. 111 of Lighty's Ohio State career, the most in school history.

After 111 wins, surprise comes only when Value City Arena is darkened by a power failure or the home nonconference schedule is illuminated by a big-name opponent. It doesn't happen when a team like the Golden Gophers storms back at the end.

"Not surprised," Lighty said. "They never give up. It's always a hard game when we play them."

Lighty:

"One of the greatest things about David Lighty, and I'll never forget this," Matta said, "is when those guys were getting ready to sign, we had all the sanctions hanging over us. Ohio State drew up a letter that basically said that if we don't get cleared, we'll let you go to another school, which was the right thing to do. And when I called Dave to tell him, he said, 'Don't send the letter. I want to be a Buckeye.'

Nice. Keep working at it.

OSULighty23 Dave Lighty
Great win for tonight.. I promise I will get in the gym and shoot some FTs.. I missed way to many SMH.. And s/o to Willy Bu for balling out

He should bring Dallas w/ him...in fact, everyone join Lighty in shooting free throws  (this is nitpicking on a team that's 17-0).

I really don't know if David going to the gym to work out his free-throw shooting is going to do him any good. He has such a pure stroke from the three-point line I think when he gets to the free-throw line he starts thinking about his stroke too much which is strange for a kid who has played b-ball so much during his life. Maybe he should shoot them from behind the arc:)

it was nice to see Lighty get aggressive and attack the basket and try to manufacture more points from the free throw line.

"Unfortunately, I didn?t make my free throws," Lighty said. "I don?t know what it was. I was missing them in shootaround, too. I have to get my mind right for that, go in the gym and shoot some more."
"I have to finish those 'and-ones,' as well. I think I had a couple of layups right in the middle of the basket that I missed."

Lighty was 6 of 13 at the line and for the season is shooting only 61.8 percent from there.

The Buckeyes were 17 of 25 and for the season are shooting 68.8 percent. Worse, in four Big Ten games, they have made only 65.3 percent, which ranks ninth in the conference.

Ohio State Buckeyes (17-0)

I chose Jared Sullinger as Midseason Player of the Year in this week's SI, but after seeing the latest episode of The Jimmer Show, I'm no longer certain of that vote. The Buckeyes are the new Power Rankings' new No. 1, after Duke lost to Florida State, but I'm not certain that Ohio State is a significantly better team than Kansas, which has been No. 2 for much of the season. I just like OSU's road resume a bit better, and think the Buckeyes are a more fine-tuned team right now. What I can be sure of, regarding the Buckeyes, is that I'm a fan of David Lighty, the senior glue guy who made a series of big plays in the second half of their Escape from Ann Arbor on Wednesday.

Some of Lighty's work showed up in the box score -- he had 12 points and five assists against one turnover -- but some, like the play I'll outline below, go into that nebulous "glue" file. A preface: Sullinger was not having his best game (he took just six shots in 35 minutes). The Wolverines were playing man-to-man defense with just under nine minutes to go; they were switching on screens, and Lighty's man, Zack Novak, would leave him to double-down on Sullinger if the ball was fed into the post. Ohio State ran a set that aimed to get Sullinger in a one-on-one situation on the right block:

110113.09.jpg

Above, Lighty (circled) is setting a screen for Jon Diebler, a 50-percent three-point shooter who'll fade to the weakside wing and spread the floor. The key, for Lighty, is to set a hard enough screen on Tim Hardaway Jr. -- with an immovable right foot and shoulder -- that it forces Novak to switch onto Diebler. Meanwhile, Buckeyes point guard Aaron Craft looks to pass to William Buford in the right corner. The next frame shows Buford with the ball:

110113.10.jpg

Because of the switch on Lighty's screen, Novak (shown between the arrows) is trapped near the left wing, preventing a skip pass to Diebler. It appears that it's now Hardaway Jr.'s job to place himself in the vicinity of Sullinger -- except Hardaway Jr. can't get there, because Lighty is pinning him outside the three-point line with a sort of wrestling move. This ensures that Sullinger will be isolated against the outmatched Evan Smotrycz on the block. The ball gets fed inside:

110113.11.jpg

Sullinger is already drop-stepping with his left foot while the pass is in the air. His easy two-pointer will be on the stat sheet, but Lighty's removal of two players from the defensive possession (Novak, via the switch, and Hardaway, via the pin) will go undocumented. Until now, that is.

You cannot fully appreciate the greatness of Lighty's all-around game until you see him in person - he does a lot of things outside the TV frame. The following were my observations following our game against Georgia Tech in the second round of the NCAA tourney last March, borne both out of appreciation for Lighty, but also disbelief that Evan Turner was receiving all the credit from most fans and media alike following that win:

JohnnyCockfight;1678993; said:
I agree with a lot of the analyses above, but have to say that the play of David Lighty was the cornerstone performance upon which all others rested. Lighty's game against Georgia Tech was one of the most efficient, best efforts by an individual that I have seen in college basketball all year. I had previously thought that Lighty played the defensive game of his life against Ralph Sampson III in the Big Ten tourney, but what he did against Derrick Favors was even more impressive. Favors is a top 5 pick in this year's draft should he declare. Favors did not score until several minutes into the second half, and most of his points came when Lighty and Lauderdale were both on the bench. Lighty's offense was equally impressive - 18 points on 8 shots, and he hit his 3-point shots at times during the game when the rest of the team was stone COLD. He was also the least sloppy ball-handler for the Buckeyes, by far. Oh, and there was that game-sealing moment when he stepped up and nailed the free throws after being body-slammed.

I noticed that all of the national articles regarding the game were about Evan Turner, and I only saw Lighty's performance recognized in the press with a Matta quote saying that Lighty was the game MVP, and a local piece by Bob Hunter. It makes me wonder whether the rest of the press was actually at the game.

Lighty notches record, silences Hawkeyes
By Nick Otte

When Ohio State played at Iowa on Jan. 4, the Hawkeyes proved a much tougher test for the Buckeyes than expected. OSU trailed at halftime of that game before escaping with just a five-point win.

The second time around, however, was much less dramatic.

Led by senior David Lighty and 40 minutes of stifling defense, No. 1 OSU (19-0, 6-0 Big Ten) routed Iowa, 70-48, Wednesday.

"It was our game plan to come in and play defense for 40 minutes," Lighty said. "It's something that we haven't been doing lately and it's something that we've been keying on.

"This week in practice it was just preparing to play real Ohio State defense and I think we came out and did it today."

Lighty finished the game with 18 points and five rebounds and became just the third player in OSU history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in his career. The only two other Buckeyes to accomplish the feat were Jim Jackson and Evan Turner.
