Ranked #3 small forward by Insiders. 6-5 180 out of Villa Angela-St. Joseph. Could probably play the 2 or 3 in colege. Great finisher. Great outside shot. Once thought to be a huge Michigan lean, recently declared Syracuse as his leader, but now says everyone is equal.

Former St. Joseph standout Stan Kimbrough was well aware during his playing days in the early 1980s the legend that preceded him and that would forever define Vikings basketball.

No name and no set of records are more cherished or more sacred at Viking Village than those of Clark Kellogg, who gobbled up just about every scoring and rebounding mark during his career from 1975-1979.
The former All-Ohioan, Big 10 MVP and NBA Rookie of the Year is so revered at Viking Village that not only did his alma mater retire his jersey number, they emblazoned "32" on the basketball court.

So on Dec. 17, 1983, as Kimbrough was in the process of scoring 46 points against East Tech and breaking Kellogg's regular-season single-game mark, his teammates were quick to remind him he had just surpassed a Viking legend.
"One of the guys said to me, 'Ooh, Clark's going to be mad at you,' " Kimbrough recalled. "But he wasn't. Clark was proud of me. He was happy for me."

And now, a little more than 21 years since that record-setting night, Kimbrough had a similar reaction after seeing his 46-point night eclipsed by the next in a long line of special Vikings players.

In the same way Kellogg embraced him, Kimbrough was pleased to welcome current junior David Lighty into an elite group in an elite basketball program.
Lighty scored 49 points in a win last Tuesday at Trinity, besting Kimbrough and coming within a basket of Kellogg's all-time school record of 51, which he scored in a 1979 state final against Columbus East. Lighty left the Vikings' 96-54 rout with approximately 3 minutes remaining.

There was no bitterness, no selfishness, no jealousy from Kimbrough when he found out Lighty had broken his long-standing record. In fact, the former Xavier standout and NBA player was excited for the 6-foot-5 wingman and said it brought back fond memories.

"It brings me back to a great time in my life, and it brought my name and Clark's name back up all over again," said Kimbrough, who is a high school girls coach in Cincinnati. "Records are made to be broken, and I thought it was great for the kid. That record stood for a long time. Here it is 2005, and it was still standing. He's a heck of a player and I hear he's a good kid, and it's nice to see someone like that carry on the Viking tradition."

Lighty has a complete comprehension and appreciation for the history and tradition that goes with wearing a Vikings uniform.
His eyes light up, a smile breaks across his face and the sound of his voice intensifies when asked about Kimbrough's record, Kellogg, the No. 32 on the home court or being part of the Viking tradition.

Understandably then, when Lighty scored 49, the quiet star was humbled by where it placed him in school history.
"It's an honor for me to be up there with a player like Stan and have that record at a school like this," Lighty said. "Hopefully, when I'm done, I'll be right up there with guys like him and Clark and all the rest."
VASJ coach Dave Wojciechowski believes when it is all said and done, Lighty's name will be in the middle of any conversation when discussing the best to ever play at the corner of East 185th and Lakeshore.

The numbers Kellogg put up were staggering, as is the adoration the current CBS college basketball analyst has at the school to this day.
Both of those things will be tough for Lighty to reach.
However, with more than a year left in his VASJ career, a work ethic his coach said is second to none, and a "basketball IQ" that Kimbrough said could separate him from other talented players and take him as far as he wants to go, nothing seems impossible for Lighty.

Not even a earning a spot on the floor at Viking Village for his number.
"It's not going to happen in two or three years, but at the rate he's going, 10 years from now I could envision him having his number retired. And who knows, you might see his No. 35 on the floor," Wojciechowski said. "I know this is saying a lot because it's Clark, and we all understand what he did here, especially Dave, but I would not put it past him to break some of the records. Every blue moon, a player like Dave comes along, but what it makes it more special is that he is so well-liked and he appreciates those that blazed the trail at this school before him."

Kimbrough knows what Lighty is going through, playing in the shadows of some of the Viking greats, always playing under the pressure and expectations of being the next big thing.

That kind of outside influence doesn't seem to faze the unflappable Lighty. It certainly did not have an effect while he was breaking a 21-year-old regular-season scoring record - one even Kellogg didn't reach - just 13 games into his junior season. Lighty grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out seven assists against Trinity just for good measure.

"The bar has been set pretty high at VASJ," Kimbrough said. "I had to deal with it playing under the shadow of Clark and Demetrius (Henderson). But I took the expectations and being mentioned along with guys like that as an honor. Just to be mentioned in the same sentence as Clark Kellogg meant a lot for me, and the way Lighty is going, he is going to be mentioned along with the best to play at the school."

Kimbrough, Kellogg and the rest of the Vikings' elite should be proud to welcome a player like Lighty into that club.

Ranked #2 Strong Forward by Scout.com. Extremely athletic and can hit the three. Also, a stand out Football prospect, but has said he is concentrating on basketball. After his junior year David was named to the Reebok ABCD All-Star game. Lighty is ranked the 13th best overall prospect in the junior class. Visited tOSU for the Michigan football game and had a great visit by all accounts.

Reportedly has an offer from tOSU and has intrest in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina and Syracuse.

Lighty attends Junior Day

RIVALS

Lighty attended the game as a wide receiver prospect but has said he is only concentrating on basketball. On the gridiron, Lighty has totaled 121 receptions for 1,867 yards and 20 TDs over the past two seasons. tOSU has offered him a basketball scholie.
