SF Justice Sueing (Official Thread)

Connection with Chris Holtmann bringing Justice Sueing to Ohio State
When Justice Sueing put his name into the transfer portal after two standout seasons at California, it didn’t take long for schools to start calling.

In the case of Ohio State, it took about 20 minutes. And a little more than a month later, Sueing decided to continue his collegiate career with the Buckeyes thanks largely to the bond forged with coach Chris Holtmann and assistant coach Ryan Pedon.

“I felt like the coaching staff was real genuine,” Sueing said in his first public comments since announcing his commitment May 10. “They were the right fit for me. I felt like we kind of clicked right from the beginning, coach Pedon and coach Holtmann. That was a big part of it, especially the understanding that I’d have a good relationship with the coaches. And then on top of that, the situation, I felt like I’d be able to really contribute to the program and make a real difference at Ohio State.”

...

“It was great,” Sueing said. “I thought the campus was great. I felt like the people that were there were really open, especially the people I spoke to. The facilities there are really nice. The whole situation kind of blew me away, and that’s what set them apart from other schools.”

A relationship with Holtmann helped, too. While coach at Butler, Holtmann recruited Sueing out of high school.

...

“I feel like because my versatility and my feel for the game, that’s why I feel like I can help Ohio State. Not just because of the position as far as the team when I get eligible and feeling like when I can come in I can be a major contributor, but more so that the system is how I played. Coach Holtmann does a great job as far as running the program. Being able to trust him, I know he’ll be able to put me in the right spots to score or play-make. I feel like we both see eye-to-eye on that and that helped a lot as far as feeling like I’ll fit into the program.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chris Holtmann, head coach of the Ohio State men’s basketball team, announced the addition of Justice Sueing to the 2019-20 roster Wednesday.

Sueing, a 6-for-7-inch forward from Honolulu, Hawaii, played the last two seasons at California before electing to transfer. He will sit out the 2019-20 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining starting with the 2020-21 season.

“We are excited about the addition of Justice to our program,” Holtmann said. “He brings experience, positional versatility, ability to score as well as a natural ability to impact the game in a variety of ways. He is hungry to continue to grow and develop as a player. This upcoming season where he will sit out, will be important for his overall growth. We were really impressed with his maturity in recruiting him and we believe his experiences his first two years in college are going to benefit him moving forward here at Ohio State.”

Sueing played in all 31 games for the Golden Bears last season, averaging a team-high 14.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He also shot 78.2 percent from the free throw line, handed out 61 assists and recorded a team-high 52 steals. As a freshman in 2017-18, Sueing, who went to high school at Santa Ana Mater Dei in California, ranked second on the team with 13.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.

Justice Sueing is officially a Buckeye.

Twelve days after Sueing announced his transfer from California, Ohio State officially confirmed the addition on Wednesday. He will sit out the 2019-20 season, then will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Sueing, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward, will eventually help replace Andre Wesson, a rising senior. He led the Golden Bears in scoring with 14.3 points per game last season, adding six rebounds, two assists and 1.7 steals per game. He also scored 13.8 points per game as a true freshman.

“We are excited about the addition of Justice to our program,” Holtmann said in a statement.

The Buckeyes lacked an ability to get to the free-throw line often last season, and Sueing should aid in that area. He averaged 5.3 free-throw attempts per game in 2018-19, more than every Ohio State player except Kaleb Wesson.

Sueing is a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, and his family moved to Los Angeles when he began high school so he could attend Mater Dei. His father played college basketball for Hawaii, then played professionally overseas.

Holtmann has expressed interest in having transfers who must sit out a season before playing. The Buckeyes added CJ Walker from Florida State last year, and he sat out the 2018-19 season before he becomes eligible this fall. Sueing will sit out the upcoming season and will have two years of eligibility left.

Have we ever had a scholarship basketball player from Hawai'i?
Probably not. Sports reference has hometowns listed since about 2003. OSU has had mens hoops players from OH, MI, IN, IL, PA, CA, WI, UT, NJ, NC, NY, GA, MS, FL, KY, MD, and TX. Now Sueing from HI and Carton from IA adds two more to the state list, at least for the last 20 years roughly.

The state of Louisiana should probably be added to that list. Jerry Lucas's stepson was on scholarship under Eldon for maybe a year. Name escapes me right now but they listed him as being from Louisiana.

Matt Valci-Lucas, adopted son of former three-time Ohio State All-America Jerry Lucas, Wednesday signed a national basketball letter-of-intent with the Buckeyes.

The 6-3 Valci-Lucas, who averaged 28 points, 16 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 blocked shots per game the past season for Word of Faith Academy, a non-denominational Christian school in New Orleans, La., played his first three years of high school basketball at a Christian school in Fremont, Calif., where he met Lucas' son, Jeff.

Lucas and his wife became Matt's legal guardians a year ago and later adopted him after he moved with them to New Orleans.
