SF LaQuinton Ross (Memphis Hustle - NBA G-League)

That article is about a week old now IIRC. If those are still reasons for him not playing he probably wasn't in much of any shape.

Or he's just behind the other players in terms of knowing the rotations, the offense, etc. You know. Basketball stuff.

I'm amazed that people expect him to arrive a month and a half late and just jump into the rotation.

Granted it was mop up time, and granted it was against Miami, but I love the fact he showed no fear. Still has a long way to go, but I trust Matta will bring out the best in him. Hope he turns out to really help us this year! :oh:
:io: agreed, no fear, and nice stroke

Nice stroke indeed. He didnt appear to be too comfortable defensively though. That said, i remember a certain mr basketball from toledo that came in as a frosh with a sweet stroke and struggled on defense and turned out ok...:wink2:

ross is going to have to really impress matta during practice to show he is getting the defensive schemes before i think he sees more then garbage time during big10 season...in 3 minutes the kid showed he is not afraid to shoot it and he has a really nice shot...and the way our offense goes in lulls sometimes it would make sense to have him come in...but he is pretty bad on D right now...granted he has been here for 13 days so he needs time...best case scenario is by late january he is doing 10 times better then today with his defense and he could be a X factor for us late in the season which is all we can ask for...glad to see he got in the game today tho...i was actually starting to feel bad for him there on the end of the bench

Yeah you're right. In a perfect world I assumed he was training and keeping in shape for 3 months on his own. *shrugs*

I'm sure he was working out, but not 5 on 5 and getting the ins and outs coaching on our offensive and defensive schemes. The other frosh were 2 months ahead of him in that regard and Sibert and Smith have had over a year of that coaching. I'm hoping he'll be ready to get some first half game action by Neb or Iowa.

I've seen quotations by Matta a couple times before about freshmen who think they are in shape, just not the shape that Matta wants. These quotations pre-date Ross, he is just another freshman who is in shape... just not as in shape as Matta wants.

Have you played basketball? If you have you know that training on your own in no way prepares you for the conditioning required or the speed of the game. That only comes from practice against great competition. He wasn't getting that shooting threes in his old high school gym. Guys may think they're pushing themselves when they train on their own to play at an elite level but they're just kidding themselves.
