Thunder's Scott Brooks stands behind Daequan Cook as a starter
By JOHN ROHDE | Published: March 11, 2012

Thunder starting guard Daequan Cook hit his last two 3-point attempts Saturday night in a 122-95 victory against Charlotte.

Trouble is, he had converted just 13 of his previous 70 shots (.186) from beyond the arc.

OKC coach Scott Brooks continues to stick with Cook in the starting lineup until Thabo Sefolosha returns from the right foot soreness that has caused him to miss the last 22 games.

Sefolosha remains listed as day-to-day and potentially could return within the next 7-10 days.

Brooks said what will keep Cook in the starting lineup is how well he does everything, not just one thing.

"Daequan has to play better," Brooks said. "He's been good for us quite some time. His shot hasn't disappeared completely. I believe in his shot, I just like when he does other things and he has to get back to doing that.

"He could be one of our better team defenders. He's a good rebounder at that spot (2.9 per game as a starter). You can't just judge his game if he makes a basket or not. I don't like when anybody does that because offensively you're going to have some bad nights, but you've got to play the defensive end of the floor."

In 21 games as a starter, Cook is shooting just 29.0 percent (31 for 107) from 3-point range.

In the previous 19 games off the bench, Cook shot 39.4 percent (28 for 71) from 3-point range.

"He has to make some (shots), there's no question," Brooks said. "When you're a shooter, you need some rhythm, you need it consistently. You can't be a roller coaster shooter where you get six (shots) in one game, zero the next. I still believe in his shot. I still believe in what he does and his preparation has always been good."

Daequan Cook is back. He was available to play tonight but Brooks opted to go with the nine-man rotation again. Brooks said he?ll proceed with Cook the same way he did with Sefolosha and ease him back into the mix.
For the second straight game, Brooks started the second quarter with Sefolosha in the lineup. He said he?s searching for minutes for Sefolosha. We?ll have to monitor how that is handled from here. That could be bad news for Cook. It?s possible that Brooks decides to shorten his rotation and go back to a nine-man rotation.

Oklahoma City Thunder: Free Daequan Cook
Posted by Berry Tramel
on April 9, 2012M

The most pleasing aspect of the Thunder?s rout of Toronto on Sunday night was the return of Daequan Cook to the OKC rotation. Since Cook?s knee injury on March 20 at Utah, he had played just two games ? four minutes or so against both Miami and Indiana.

But Cook played 19 minutes against the Raptors and scored eight points. He made three of eight shots.

The Thunder signed Derek Fisher on March 21, ostensibly to back up Russell Westbrook. But quickly it became clear that Fisher would eat into Cook?s minutes, too.

Scotty Brooks has played Fisher 20.4 minutes per game since his arrival. Reggie Jackson, who had been Westbrook?s backup since the early-season injury to Eric Maynor, averages 11.3 minutes per game. So those extra nine minutes a game are coming from somewhere.

Those minutes are not giving Westbrook more rest. Westbrook is averaging 35.7 minutes a game this season, but he?s averaging 38.8 minutes a game since Fisher?s arrival.

Brooks has decided to use Fisher as the extra wing player when the Thunder goes to its small lineup. So Fisher plays with Westbrook, Kevin Durant, James Harden and whichever big guy Brooks chooses to use.

Personally, I want to see Thabo Sefolosha in that small lineup, but I?d much rather have Cook than Fisher. Cook stretches the defense; he?s shooting a mediocre .338 from 3-point range this season, but Cook is a career .364 3-point shooter. Fisher is a career .373 shooter on 3-pointers but is just five of 20 for the Thunder and was just 24 of 74 this season for the Lakers.

Fisher has been a clutch playoff shooter for years, but he?s not a reliable shooter. Not anymore. Cook?s minutes should be restored, while Fisher should be asked to do what he was brought in to do: spell Westbrook.

Thunder 118, Kings 110

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - When Oklahoma City Thunder All-Stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook head to the bench to rest in the fourth quarter, that's usually James Harden's time to take over.

Daequan Cook proved to be the perfect substitute for the NBA's top-scoring bench player.

Durant scored 32 points and Cook had all 19 of his points in the fourth quarter to rally the Thunder to a 118-110 win against the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night in their first game since Harden took an elbow to the head.

Harden wasn't able to pass league-mandated tests to allow him to return after the concussion he suffered when he was hit by the Los Angeles Lakers' Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest.

Cook broke out of a slump to help ease that pain, at least for one game.

"He's a big factor on our bench. Not just our bench but our whole team," Cook said. "The bench guys had to step up big."

Cook started the fourth quarter with a jumper and a 3-pointer to erase a four-point deficit, and he went on to score Oklahoma City's first 14 points of the period and put the Thunder ahead for the first time since the first quarter.

"Fortunately with James out, Daequan was that guy," Durant said. "He was able come through for us and make some really big shots."

Thunder-Spurs: Welcome to My World with Thunder guard Daequan Cook

The reserve played sparingly through the first four games of the Western Conference Finals. But he came off the bench to score eight points in less than four minutes of Game 5 to help Oklahoma City beat the Spurs.

Thunder reserve guard Daequan Cook played sparingly through the first four games of the Western Conference Finals. But he came off the bench to score eight points in less than four minutes of Game 5, playing a small but important role in Oklahoma City?s 108-103 victory over San Antonio.

?We?ve been through a lot of tough games and that?s prepared us for tonight?s game. We know how good San Antonio is, so it?s important for us to hold our composure and take it play by play. We know how important it was that they were going to make a run, but we just had to stay composed.

?There?s a lot of confidence. We get to go back home and play in front of our crowd, who has been behind us through it all. It?s important for us to continue to play the way we have been playing the past few games.

?We had confidence the whole game. Always as a player, when your teammates pass you the ball, it just lets you know that they have confidence in you. I always have confidence in myself. It?s important every shot that I shoot that I have confidence in myself to knock in down. That?s what happened.?

NBA Finals: Q&A with Thunder reserve ? and former Heat player ? Daequan Cook

Cook said trade two years ago to Oklahoma City was the best decision for himself and Miami.

By John Rohde | Published: June 12, 2012

Thunder reserve Daequan Cook is a former Miami Heat player. He talked about facing his old team and growing up with Miami rookie Norris Cole.

Q: You?re smiling, so you already know the first question. Are you glad you?re facing your old team in the Heat?

A: ?Somewhat, yeah. I?m looking forward to it. It just feels good to be in the finals. We prepared to play anybody, but you always feel a lot better going against your old team.?

When the Heat traded you two summers ago to free up cap space to sign LeBron James and Chris Bosh, were you angry at the time?

?Not really. Not angry, not confused at all. After it happened, I talked to (president) Pat Riley and said it was the best decision not just for the team but for myself. He just put me in a better situation.?

The Thunder had a tough first year here with 23 wins. You had an even worse first year with the Heat (2007-08) winning just 15 games. Do you ever bring that up with any of your current teammates?

?Oh, yeah. Yeah. Me and KD (Kevin Durant) talk about it because we came in the league together. Both our teams made quick turnarounds and made it to the playoffs the following year.?

You and Heat rookie point guard Norris Cole were teammates growing up in Dayton, Ohio.

?We were teammates from seventh grade all the way through high school. We were one year apart. Same middle school (Fairview), same high school (Dunbar). He played varsity from 10th grade through the 12th. I played ninth grade through 12th. We played together two years in high school. He actually was a really good quarterback, then he switched it over and started playing basketball. He started at point guard the year we won the state title.?

Cole, Cook bring some pride to Dayton
by Ethan J. Skolnick

Cleveland has an interest in these Finals, for sure, especially those who would prefer that LeBron James not succeed.

So does another city in Ohio: Dayton.

That city, in Norris Cole?s view, isn?t really rooting for one side or the other.

?Whichever,? Cole said. ?They really don?t care. They?re happy we both made it.?

Dayton has two native sons in this series, Cole and former Heat guard Daequan Cook, who played together on the 2006 state champion Dunbar Wolverines, before Cook graduated and Cole led the team to another title.

?He was always dedicated,? Cook said.

?He had a couple 40-point games,? Cole said. ?He always got 30. He could just shoot.?

They still compete with, and against, each other in offseason pickup games in local gyms. And yes, when Cole got drafted by the Heat, Cook shared some knowledge about the organization, for which he played from getting picked in the first round in 2007 until getting traded to the Thunder to clear cap space in 2010. Cook is only one year older than Cole, and yet has been in the league four years longer, after playing only one season at Ohio State.

?It?s still kind of strange,? Cook said of facing his former team, now in the Finals.

Cook Visits Thunder Youth Basketball Camp
By NICK GALLO | Thunder Basketball Writer
He was only a few days removed from the end of the 2011-2012 season, but on Tuesday afternoon Thunder guard Daequan Cook was already working up a sweat.

Before heading out of town for a bit for a brief summer break, Cook took the time to stop by the Thunder Youth Basketball Camp at Mid-American Christian University. The afternoon started off with a question and answer session with the 100-plus 5-to-14 year olds who were in attendance, then the campers broke up into a number of different basketball drill stations that Cook helped guide them through.

?I hadn?t really had the opportunity to be around the camps, around the kids,? Cook said. ?So it?s a quality time to come out and be a part of the camp before I left town.?

This was the fourth out of nine summer camps that the Thunder will put on this year, and Mid-American was proud to host the camp for a second straight year. Even the University?s administration stopped by to see how the Thunder took over the gymnasium and made an impact on the budding basketball players. Dr. Eric Anthony Joseph, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Mid-American, was thrilled to have Cook in attendance, but also for what the Thunder?s presence meant to his university.

?This is in the theme of building something bigger and better,? Joseph said. ?The Thunder had a great season and they were great for the community. This is just awesome? They?ve been involved in the community here in South Oklahoma City and we wanted to put something together so that we can build community engagement with the surrounding community. So we said, what about a camp??

Daequan Cook Off-Season Q&A
By NICK GALLO | Thunder Basketball Writer
When Daequan Cook steps onto the basketball floor- at the Integris Health Thunder Development Center, Chesapeake Energy Arena or at community events - his laugh booms and his energy reverberates through those around him.

On Tuesday, Cook took time out of his busy summer schedule to work with the kids at the Thunder Youth Basketball Camp at the Thunder Event Center , displaying his unique verve. The team hosted its eighth of nine camps this week, with boys and girls aged five through 16 learning from counselors like Thunder Youth Basketball director Tyler Blackwell and even players like Cook throughout the summer.

This past season Cook saw action in 57 of the Thunder?s 66 regular season games, starting 22. During those games he averaged 5.5 points and 2.1 rebounds on 34.6 percent three-point shooting while playing 17.4 minutes per game. That sharpshooter also sparked a key run during Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, when he went 3-for-3 from the floor for eight points during a four minute stretch.

This summer, Cook has been working hard to improve his craft, working out at the team?s practice facility and even supporting his teammates at Summer League by taking his workout sessions to Orlando in mid-July. After the former Ohio State guard was done playing five-on-five with the kids at the Thunder Youth Basketball camp, he took the time to chat with thunder.nba.com.

On his time with the kids at Thunder Youth Basketball Camp:

Cook: ?It was a lot of fun for me to come be in town, come out here and spend a little time with the kids, especially knowing they support us a lot and they look up to us. It?s fun to come out here and have a good time with them.?

On why he is always so energetic and why these events matter to him:

Cook: ?I know they look up to us. At the end of the day they don?t have the opportunity to be around us as much. For me, I take advantage of it. It?s important, a lot of kids look up to us and we always want to have a positive attitude and impact on their lives. For me to come out here and be able to interact with them for an hour, I like having a good time anyway.?
