SG Jon Diebler (2nd-Most Big Ten career 3-Pointers, Butler Recruiting Director)

Jon Diebler is truely a unique talent. Tayshaun Prince is actually not a bad comparison for Diebler, if I were to compare him to someone. I would recommend going to watch him and Upper Sandusky play this year. They are a lot of fun to watch. They play a fast tempo game, and press the whole time. Jon at times can truely take over a game in all parts of the game. (shooting, rebounding, playing defense, taking the ball up the court, etc.) Upper Sandusky plays in the NOL (Northern Ohio League), the league should be very competitive this year. Willard, a state power in basketball the last couple of years, is also in the NOL. Below I listed when and where they play Willard if anyone is interested in watching Jon play in person this year. (I tried to find Upper Sandusky's complete schedule, but only could find Willard's '05-'06 schedule. As soon as I find their schedule I will post it).

On the sidelines

One of the staples of the fall is college football games. One of the staples of the fall recruiting season is getting recruits on campus for big football weekends. Ohio State had its four commitments from the 2006 class, including Lawrence North's Oden and point guard Mike Conley, on campus for the Sept. 10 game against Texas.

The most intriguing sight among the basketball recruits at the game, though, was Jon Diebler. A 6-6 guard-forward combination from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Diebler attended the OSU-Texas game instead of Michigan-Notre Dame. He originally made a verbal commitment to Valparaiso after his sophomore year, but he has been quoted recently as saying he's looking forward to playing with Ohio State's 2006 class. He's also being recruited by Michigan.

Its somewhat suprising that the decision is coming this early, but I have been hearing for about two months that Diebler was completely blown away with OSU and Coach Matta.

If he indeed decides on OSU, it will be a huge start to the 07 class. He is currently ranked #7 in that deep class.

:oh: :io:

I'm certainly excited about Diebler, but let's get real about the analogies. Dunleavy was 6-10 with handles and a sweet J, along with being a leaper and canny shot-blocker. Not many true Dunleavy-like talents, and if JD were he would be a top-20 rank.

If you ever saw Mike Dunleavy in person you would be really careful about saying anybody has his game. Of the Dookies of his era only JWil had the kind of magic Dunleavy had. Too bad about JWil's poor decision making.

I think when these comparisons are made they aren't supposed to be taken so exact. Of course Diebler isn't as skilled as what Dunleavy is right now. I don't think stating his game is reminiscent of Mike's is out of line.

Kyle Lamb said it best on BN (and I'm paraphrasing):

Not only is Diebler's physical stature compareable to Dunleavy's, his game is also. He also has the skills and intangibles to evolve into a player of Mike's caliber.

Mike Dunleavy was almost considered a reach (for Duke) coming out of high school. He had big name recognition, but I don't recall any talent evaluators that had him top 20 at the high school level. I recall Scout had him in the forty range. Dunleavy was not 6'10" as a HS senior, either...I believe he was always listed at 6'6" or 6'7". FWIW

Considering Diebler is only going to be a Junior, I don't see why he can't develop and become just as good, if not better, than Dunleavy. Leading your team to an undefeated state championship in Ohio as a Sophomore is extremely rare. Not that he won it alone, but it is still an impressive accomplishment for Division II. I think it's a great offer, and I am surprised and impressed that he changed his tune for Ohio State so quickly.

When point guard Jake Diebler of Upper Sandusky High School made a recruiting visit to Valparaiso in January, younger brother Jon tagged along. When Jake committed to sign with Valpo, so did Jon.
But Jon apparently had second thoughts after he was one of the stars of the state boys basketball tournament in March, and that might result in him changing plans and attending Ohio State.
The 6-foot-6 sophomore guard scored 61 points in two games and made seven three-point baskets in one in leading Upper Sandusky to the Division II title.
Valparaiso coach Homer Drew gave Jon permission to visit other schools this summer. Jon attended the Ohio State-Texas football game Sept. 10 with a number of other basketball recruits, including 2006 commitments Greg Oden, Daequan Cook, Mike Conley Jr. and David Lighty. This morning, he is expected to announce he will join them in 2007, though he cannot sign a binding letter of intent for another 14 months.
"He did not want to have any regrets," Keith Diebler, Jon’s father and high-school coach, said yesterday without revealing his son’s decision. "Once this is (announced), this is it, it’s over and done with. He wants to move on."
Keith Diebler said Jon also visited Michigan and North Carolina State after receiving Drew’s blessing. Jon spent part of this past weekend with his brother at Valparaiso, where Jake is a freshman, before returning home to discuss his decision with his parents.
Jon Diebler could not be reached for comment yesterday.
He is rated the ninth-best shooting guard nationally in the class of 2007 by the Scout-.com recruiting Web site. He averaged 26 points per game last season.
Diebler is one of at least three Ohioans in the class of 2007 known to be a high priority of Ohio State coaches. The other two, 7-foot Kosta Koufos of Canton GlenOak and 6-8 Dallas Lauderdale of Solon, also were at the Texas game but are not believed to be close to making a commitment.
Ohio State also has a commitment already from a 2008 recruit, 6-10 B.J. Mullens of Harvest Prep. [email protected]

The Diebler decision has been moved back. More indecision about whether to stick with his original commitment to Valpo, which is where his bro has a schollie. KyleSLamb says we should have a decision in the near future.
