Varese turns its attention on Alonzo Gee and Jon Diebler
The Italian team tried to sign Marcelus Kemp

Cimberio Varese in the last days tried to sign Marcelus Kemp from Virtus Bologna but the negotiations with the player and Virtus Bologna were too difficult and expensive (his buyout is $90.000).

So, Varese is now eyeing Alonzo Gee and Jon Diebler.
Gee after his college career with Alabama spent his rookie season in NBDL with Austin Toros averaging 21.2ppg and 6.7rpg.

Last season he was in NBA with three different teams: Spurs, Cavaliers and Wizards.

With San Antonio he played 3 games averaging less than 1ppg.
WIth Cavaliers Gee scored 7.4ppg and grabbed 3.9rpg in 40 games while with Wizards he recorded averages of 4ppg and 2.8rpg in 8 games.

If Varese will sign Gee, then will turn its attention to Jon Diebler. The sharpshooter was alreadyoffered to Varese few weeks ago but the Italian team turned down the proposal. Now the name of former Ohio State came back in the agenda of Cecco Vescovi, GM of the team. Dibler averaged 12.6ppg with Ohio State in his last season in NCAA.

Diebler visits basketball camp at Bowsher

Bowsher assitant boys basketball coach Keith Diebler wrapped up his camp today and he brought a special guest along with him.

Former Ohio State Buckeye, and the coach's son, Jon Diebler spoke to the campers, answered questions and signed autographs. He helped teach the kids the fundamentals that his father taught him.

"Camp's been great...just coming in, working with the kids, working on fundamentals...the shooting, the dribbling, things like that...It's fun to interact with them, watch them work hard and compete" said Diebler.

Jon wasn't completely mobile, he was wearing a boot after twisting his ankle playing a pick up game.

"It's not a big deal...everyone gets a sprain so, I'll be fine in a week or two."

He may have to take some time off but soon the Upper Sandusky alum will be competing at the highest level. Last month he was taken 51st overall in the NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.

"It was an awesome time...It got a little late but just being able to hear my name called has been a blessing and just to be able to share that with my family was awesome."

Of course because of the NBA lockout, Diebler's debut with Portland may come a little later than expected.

"Right now we haven't been able to talk to Portland. My wife and I went out there [to Portland] right after the Draft to talk to them. I think it's unfortunate that it happened right now but it's something that has to be done."

Kobe Bryant began his tour in Athens as the guest of honor at the House of Hoops at Footlocker store opening. The basketball star greeted fans who had gathered outside the new store from early in the day to welcome him.
Fans at the opening had the opportunity to compete in a dunk contest starring young ballers of who hoped to impress Kobe. Along with the basketball player Jon Diebler, Kobe judged the contest and presented prizes for the evening?s most amazing slam dunks...

NBA Lockout Day 88 & Kobe Visits Athens - 9.26.2011


About 600 people were outside of the store, packing the street to get a glimpse of the Los Angeles Laker legend. The mini-dunk contest exhibition that took place ended up stealing the attention though. One of the teenage kids BROKE the rim on his jam attempt. I don't care how cheap that basket may have looked, it's still quite the feat. Kobe along with Portland Trailblazer second round Draft pick, and current Panionios player, Jon Diebler were 'judging' the jam session. The scene speaks for itself...

Diebler recently made his regular season pro debut on 10.23.2011. He had 6 points (2-5 from 3, no 2pt attempts), 1 steal & 1 rebound in 20 minutes (boxscore)

Jon Diebler had no idea this is how his first year out of college would turn out.

After growing up in Upper Sandusky and spending his entire life living in Ohio, the state's all-time leading scorer now finds himself halfway around the world. In a matter of three months, Diebler went from graduating as the Big Ten's all-time leader in 3-point field goals at Ohio State, to a newlywed, to being selected by the Portland Trail Blazers (51st overall in the 2011 NBA Draft) and suddenly playing for Panionios in the Greek League and living in the Nea Smymi district in Athens, Greece.

Not bad for a 23-year old who thought he'd have to battle for a roster spot with a non-guaranteed contract in Portland.

Funny how life turns out. While the NBA lockout was a curse to some players around the league, it's truly turned into a blessing for Diebler.

"I have no regrets waiting (to play overseas). I looked at this as an opportunity to get better as a basketball player, but most importantly grow as a man," Diebler told Ridiculous Upside.

"This has taught me patience and made me realize how truly blessed I am to play the game that I love in another part of the world."

Star-divide

Back in late June when the Blazers introduced the 6-foot-6 guard at a press conference along with fellow rookie Nolan Smith and point guard Raymond Felton, Diebler's agent, Lance Young, and Portland had already discussed the option of his client playing overseas with the lingering NBA lockout casting a dark shadow across the league. The opportunity was multi-beneficial: Diebler would find a club willing to feature him, and in return he'd be able to develop his overall game in a competitive league in Europe. So when Diebler signed a one-year contract to play in Greece with Panionios in the Greek League in early August, Portland borrowed a page from their old "draft and stash" playbook. But instead of being an overseas project in the guise of Victor Claver or Joel Freeland before him, Diebler would have the chance to experience the game from the other side of the world fresh out of Ohio State.

"We drafted him because of his shooting and this year in Greece will provide him with an opportunity for good minutes and a chance to develop other areas of his game," explained Portland's acting General Manager Chad Buchanan.

The development side of Diebler's game is in full-swing.

In 11 games this season, Diebler is averaging 8.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in 20 minutes per game, while shooting 50% from the field, 52.8 % from 3-point, and 92.3% from the free-throw line. Numbers aside, playing in Greece has provided Diebler the chance to soak in the knowledge of the pro game the only way a rookie really can -- by actually playing and experiencing in-game scenarios for himself.

Diebler & Xanthopoulos put on a show

Jon Diebler (photo) - signed through FCM to Panionios - and FCM point guard Vassilis Xanthopoulos put on a great show in Nea Smyrni and lead the home side to an easy win over Kavala for the 13th matchday of the Greek A1. The Ohio State graduate scored a career high in Greece 20 points with 6/10 3-pointers to lead Panionios to the 7th win of the season that brings them to the 4th place of the table after the end of the first round.

Yep, that is big Zisis at 15 secs and starting at the 2:09 mark as he checks out. :)

That was a sick fade-away three by Diebler as the shot clock expired and you have to love the tough offensive rebound/put-back.

Jon Diebler (#51 Portland Trail Blazers) - Panionios B.C.

In the past few months, there's one general Twitter question that comes my way from fans in Portland: will Jon Diebler come over next season?

Those same Rip City die-hards tend to ask the same about Joel Freeland for Unicaja Malaga ( yes, Portland still owns his rights) and although the upcoming offseason will help answer those questions, the Blazers brass are keeping close tabs on Diebler's season in Greece with Panionios.

The 6-foot-6 swing guard out of Ohio State leads the team in scoring with 10.3 points per game, and is shooting 57% from the field and 53% from 3-point. Sure, it's the Greek League and not the NBA, but keep it mind what Portland's front office is gauging here during his first season overseas: overall growth in his game.

Diebler -- as he told Ridiculous Upside in January -- would like to make the move to Portland next season and with a revamped roster in the works this summer for Portland, it's still a possibility. The two sides will talk, review Diebler's time in Greece and negotiate from there.

Diebler headed to Summer League: Guard Jon Diebler, the Blazers? second-round pick in the 2011 draft (51st overall), will also head to the Las Vegas Summer League according to Young, his agent.

Diebler, 23, is playing for Panionios in the Greek League. In 25 games, he is averaging 10.4 points while shooting 57.1 percent from the field, 50.4 percent from three-point range and 89.7 percent from the free-throw line. The former Ohio State standout is averaging 24 minutes a game.
