SG Kameron Williams (Sayago - Uruguay)

I think you're nuts if you believe a kid should redshirt because he has mono. C'mon now. This is college basketball, and 4-star recruits like Kam don't redshirt ANYWHERE in college basketball more than once in a blue moon. Duke doesn't redshirt anybody if they don't have to. Neither does Kentucky or UNC or UCLA or a host of other top programs. This is not football - if you're not a bust, if you're a 4-star recruit you will be able to play and contribute as a freshman in college basketball provided the competition isn't overwhelming. I believe in Kam still, I think he has a chance to make an impact on this team, but clearly some negative inferences are being drawn by certain people (not really singling out LitlBuck here, as there have been others to view missing practice due to mono as a severe negative) that I don't think are fair. Bottom line is, in spite of this early and fairly mild setback, if Kam can shoot the lights out this year he will still get a chance to play and contribute because this team needs guys who can put points on the board and that's what he will bring.

I realize that he is a really good baller but to miss a great deal of fall practice time is very bad. It will hurt him severely not so much from the offensive end but from the defense. I guess my point regarding redshirting was that mono can linger for quite some time so we will see when he gets back. I know that Matta hardly ever, or really never that I am aware of, redshirts anyone so I do not see him redshirting Williams unless the mono really lingers.

Glad to see Kam finally got the OK to get back into practice today. He's come back at a good time. He only missed about a month and he'll have five days before the first game to get back in the flow. I think this year with all the fouls being called, the bench is going to be much more important than it was in the past. Heck, Dayton had a game where 70 fouls were called in exhibition the other day. If your team is getting called for 30+ fouls a game from time to time, then guys like Kam coming off the bench will have to be relied on heavily in those games and produce.

A month is a long time for an incoming freshman. I know that he is very gifted offensively but he is going to have to show Matta that he has caught on to how you play defense in college and especially Matta's way.

Well, with the rule changes you could argue that nobody is going to be able to play tough defense this year - it may be that to some extent the college hoops game is now a war of attrition, trying to draw fouls and avoid having too many guys in serious foul trouble. Clearly you wouldn't think Kam would be a guy who would muscle up guys and keep them from driving with his strength, but if you can't do that sort of thing within the rules now anyway I don't know that is a reason to discount his chances.

You know, or at least I hope you do, that there is more to basketball defense than being physical. Team defense is the name of the game and I think that Kam is going to be hurt by missing so much time because he will not have practiced as much with the rest of the guys.

According to a report from Jeff Rapp, Kam is still being held out of practice, so unfortunately he is going to miss the start of the regular season at least. On the bright side, this is the least important portion of the college basketball season and things don't really start to heat up until January so there is plenty of time for him to get back in the flow. But ultimately Kam's ability to get on the court this year depends on how good he can play, and if he doesn't get a lot of PT this year it won't be because of mono it will be because of the guys he has to compete with for minutes.

Will you please give it up. A freshman missing this much practice time does not bode for him getting much playing time this season. You have it wrong. The most important part of the season is not the regular season but it is the practice before that and that is what Kam is missing. I tried to tell you that Mono can linger for a long time but you just do not want to believe it.

It might linger, but November and December are almost meaningless. It's not like he truly missed the start of practice - he was at OSU four months before he got sidelined. He'll be back by the time meaningful games start.

Kam will play this season. He's too big a talent to be sidelined for the entire season due to mononucleosis at the season's outset.

Remember that he's thought by many to be a top-10 talent among incoming frosh. He's likely a future NBA player. Keep this in mind before writing his year off to redshirt.

I agree Max that Kam is too good to sit out for that long due to this illness. I read reports that he would return to practice on November 4th, then another report came out on the 8th that he was not ready to return to practice, so there is some uncertainty about how soon he will be back but I would say the realistic worst-case scenario is he is back by early December.

I don't know if he's got the talent to make the NBA but surely he is capable talent-wise of contributing on this OSU team, and was earning praise (along with Marc) for his play, this summer from Sam - in fact Sam mentioned Kam first and foremost - as well as into the start of practice from Coach Matta. I think Kam definitely can help add some quality depth to this team and put up some valuable points off the bench here and there. I know the one sticking point seems to be with regard to defense, but ADV is playing and he isn't giving you much out there in terms of D or rebounding.

I do think Kam is undervalued at being ranked around 80th in this class, but he's no where near a top 10 talent in this class and the NBA is but a dream right now.

I still don't understand how difficult it is to accept that mono is not just any illness and getting back in shape alone after being out 5-6 weeks with mono is going to take at least a month and maybe longer. Add on that he is a freshman that missed the most important practice time of the year and I think there is very little chance he makes it into the rotation at any point this year. The last 5-6 weeks were where the staff works on drilling the offensive and defensive concepts and now that we are into games, much of the practice time is now being spent on game prep. I don't know whether he should redshirt or not, but the fact that Matta has brought it up in conversation is telling.
