SG Michael Redd (NBA All Star, Olympic gold medalist)

U.S. basketball takes shot with Redd

By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer

The United States has some cuts to make, but Michael Redd probably shouldn't be too concerned.

The Americans have gone too long without a reliable perimeter threat, so they'd be wise not to send home one of the NBA's best.

Inconsistent 3-point shooting has plagued the Americans while going without a title in their past three major international events, a problem they hope they've addressed with the additions of Redd and Mike Miller.

"Both Mike Miller, Michael Redd — both Mikes can shoot this," point guard Jason Kidd said. "So it definitely gives us an added weapon."

U.S. routs U.S. Virgin Islands 123-59

By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer Fri Aug 24, 6:40 AM ET

LAS VEGAS - Kobe Bryant spent the first part of his 29th birthday on the bench. No matter. Thanks to Michael Redd, Bryant wasn't missed. Redd came off the bench with a flurry of 3-pointers to turn the game into an early rout, and the United States beat the U.S. Virgin Islands 123-59 on Thursday night in the FIBA Americas tournament.

Redd and Carmelo Anthony each scored 22 points for the Americans (2-0), who put together a dominant stretch immediately after Bryant went to the bench with his second foul less than 4 minutes into the game.

The man can flat out shot the ball. Did the rest of you guys see him dialing up 3's the other night against the Virgin Islands?? It was almost like I could see Scoonie out there dishing it to him too. :) These are the kind of guys we need in order to win Gold this time around.

Once Lightly Regarded, All-Star Guard Sparks U.S. Team

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 24 -- Michael Redd's inability to hit outside shots coming out of Ohio State explains how he slipped to the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round in 2001. That same inability limited him to just six games his rookie season and led the then-Bucks coach to give him the best advice of his young career.

"George Karl, he really told me, to be a shooting guard, you need to learn how to shoot," Redd said on Friday, a day after he hit three three-pointers and scored 15 points in a five-minute, first-quarter flurry that blew open the Americans' 123-59 rout of the Virgin Islands in the FIBA Americas Championship.

Redd scores 34 to lead Bucks to first road win, 111-107 over Cavaliers
By Tom Withers, AP Sports Writer

CLEVELAND ? The Milwaukee Bucks are 1-for-LeBron.
Michael Redd scored a season-high 34 points, Mo Williams added 20 and the Bucks ended a seven-game losing streak against Cleveland with their first road win, 111-107 over the Cavaliers on Tuesday night.

The Bucks hadn't beaten the Cavs since Dec. 10, 2005. They also snapped an eight-game losing streak in Cleveland, where they had been winless since Jan. 6, 2003 - the season before LeBron James arrived.

"We broke the road losing streak, the Cleveland losing streak. It means a lot," Redd said. "It was big for us to come in here and get a win. I think it's something we can build on."

Team USA helped Redd; Billups praises Bucks guard for losing weight
Bucks guard more team oriented
December 1, 2007

The worry for many NBA players going into Team USA camp last summer was that the experience would drag them down in the regular season.

That hasn't been the case -- most of those players have started the season strong.

That group includes Milwaukee guard Michael Redd, who the Pistons face tonight.

Redd has turned a successful showing with that All-Star-caliber team into a more team-oriented performance this season. He's averaging career highs in rebounds (5.8) and assists (3.8), and seems to be committed to hurting opponents with more than just his rapid-fire shot.

"Mike had a great, great summer," said Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups, who also played on Team USA last summer. "He's leading and showing from the experience he had this summer how to win. He's doing a great job of it."

Billups said playing against Redd last season, he could tell the former All-Star was out of shape, even while averaging 27 points. Redd has lost weight.

"It wasn't no secret that he was a little bit overweight," Billups said. "When you are overweight, you're not able to perform at your same ability as your regular game weight, especially a guy like him who's going to have the ball in his hands a lot. ... You're not in the right shape, you can't move and do the things you usually do."

Mike is killing it this year. Just repeating what many have said, but it's amazing to see how great a shooter he has become since leaving tOSU. I don't get to see many Milwaukee games, but I taped every U.S game from the Fiba Americas Tournament and Redd really showed out. His shooting ability is a great asset to the national team, especially when he's getting open looks thanks to Kobe and Lebron.:) I hope he stays healthy and segues his stellar play into the 2nd half of the NBA and Beijing summer 2008.

Up Close with Michael Redd

By: Jessica Camerato Last Updated: 12/19/07

The scene in front of Michael Redd's locker was unlike most NBA locker rooms. The five reporters wanting to talk to him weren't in a huddle. They were waiting in an orderly line to talk to Redd, the accommodating veteran guard who was fielding interviews one at a time.

Redd is different than most professional athletes. Before the game, he talks to the media in his street clothing, neglecting to change into his warmup gear until everyone is taken care of. After the game, he engages reporters before he has a chance to dry off from the showers. HOOPSWORLD recently talked to Redd about his impressive season, staying out of the spotlight, and the two sides to his personality.

There's a saying that like fine wine, some people get better with age, and looking at your overall numbers it would certainly seem that way. This is your eighth season in the league and you're really having a breakout year. What is the difference this season?

"Well that's my goal every year, to have a breakout year. For me, I want to become a great player. I want to become the best player that I can be in this league. When I retire I can say I maximized my skills to limit, I did what I could to be the best that I could, and this year's no different. I wanted to get better as far as making my teammates better and really just diversify my game and not just be a one-dimensional scorer."
